Object geometry serves humans' intuitive physics of stability.

How do humans judge physical stability? A prevalent account emphasizes the mental simulation of physical events implemented by an intuitive physics engine in the mind. Here we test the extent to which the perceptual features of object geometry are sufficient for supporting judgments of falling direction. In all experiments, adults and children judged the falling direction of a tilted object and, across experiments, objects differed in the geometric features (i.e., geometric centroid, object height, base size and/or aspect ratio) relevant to the judgment. Participants' performance was compared

Intrinsic Noise Improves Speech Recognition in a Computational Model of the Auditory Pathway.

Noise is generally considered to harm information processing performance. However, in the context of stochastic resonance, noise has been shown to improve signal detection of weak sub- threshold signals, and it has been proposed that the brain might actively exploit this phenomenon. Especially within the auditory system, recent studies suggest that intrinsic noise plays a key role in signal processing and might even correspond to increased spontaneous neuronal firing rates observed in early processing stages of the auditory brain stem and cortex after hearing loss. Here we present a computatio

Bidirectional propagation of low frequency oscillations over the human hippocampal surface.

The hippocampus is diversely interconnected with other brain systems along its axis. Cycles of theta-frequency activity are believed to propagate from the septal to temporal pole, yet it is unclear how this one-way route supports the flexible cognitive capacities of this structure. We leveraged novel thin-film microgrid arrays conformed to the human hippocampal surface to track neural activity two-dimensionally in vivo. All oscillation frequencies identified between 1-15 Hz propagated across the tissue. Moreover, they dynamically shifted between two roughly opposite directions oblique to the l

Automated Detection of TMJ Osteoarthritis Based on Artificial Intelligence.

The purpose of this study was to develop a diagnostic tool to automatically detect temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images with artificial intelligence. CBCT images of patients diagnosed with temporomandibular disorder were included for image preparation. Single-shot detection, an object detection model, was trained with 3,514 sagittal CBCT images of the temporomandibular joint that showed signs of osseous changes in the mandibular condyle. The region of interest (condylar head) was defined and classified into 2 categories-indeterminate f

Deep Belief CNN Feature Representation Based Content Based Image Retrieval for Medical Images.

Avascular Necrosis (AN) is a cause of muscular-skeletal disability. As it is common amongst the younger people, early intervention and prompt diagnosis is requisite. This disease normally affects the femoral bones, in order that the bones' shape gets altered due to the fracture. Other common sites encompass knees, humerus, shoulders, jaw, and ankles. The retrieval of the AN affected bone images is challenging due to its varied fracture locations. This work proposes an effectual methodology for retrieval of AN images utilizing Deep Belief CNN Feature Representation. Initially, the input dataset

A cognitive brain-computer interface for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are often based on the control of sensorimotor processes, yet sensorimotor processes are impaired in patients suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We devised a new paradigm that targets higher-level cognitive processes to transmit information from the user to the BCI. We instructed five ALS patients and twelve healthy subjects to either activate self-referential memories or to focus on a process without mnemonic content while recording a high-density electroencephalogram (EEG). Both tasks are designed to modulate activity in the default mode netw

Automated quality assurance of rigid brain CT/MR image registration using a 3D convolutional neural network.

BACKGROUND: Accurate CT/MR registration is important in stereotactic brain radiotherapy, where small spatial errors may affect target localization and treatment planning. In many clinical settings, registration quality is still assessed primarily through manual visual inspection. However, time and workflow constraints may limit the consistency and depth of manual evaluation. PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop a 3D convolutional neural network (3D CNN)-based quality assurance (QA) method for rigid brain CT/MR registration using paired sub-volumes and a registration-level mean probability sco

Automated ventricular segmentation and shunt failure detection using convolutional neural networks.

While ventricular shunts are the main treatment for adult hydrocephalus, shunt malfunction remains a common problem that can be challenging to diagnose. Computer vision-derived algorithms present a potential solution. We designed a feasibility study to see if such an algorithm could automatically predict ventriculomegaly indicative of shunt failure in a real-life adult hydrocephalus population. We retrospectively identified a consecutive series of adult shunted hydrocephalus patients over an eight-year period. Associated computed tomography scans were extracted and each scan was reviewed by tw

Data-driven identification of diagnostically useful extrastriatal signal in dopamine transporter SPECT using explainable AI.

This study used explainable artificial intelligence for data-driven identification of extrastriatal brain regions that can contribute to the interpretation of dopamine transporter SPECT with 123I-FP-CIT in parkinsonian syndromes. A total of 1306 123I-FP-CIT-SPECT were included retrospectively. Binary classification as 'reduced' or 'normal' striatal 123I-FP-CIT uptake by an experienced reader served as standard-of-truth. A custom-made 3-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained for classification of the SPECT images with 1006 randomly selected images in three different settings

Can artificial intelligence achieve human-level performance? A pilot study of childhood sexual abuse detection in self-figure drawings.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a worldwide phenomenon that has negative long-term consequences for the victims and their families, and inflicts a considerable economic toll on society. One of the main difficulties in treating CSA is victims' reluctance to disclose their abuse, and the failure of professionals to detect it when there is no forensic evidence (Bottoms et al., 2014; McElvaney, 2013). Estimated disclosure rates for child sexual abuse based on retrospective adult reports range from 23 % to 45 % (e.g., Bottoms et al., 2014). This study reports the four stages in the development of a

A new 2.5D representation for lymph node detection using random sets of deep convolutional neural network observations.

Automated Lymph Node (LN) detection is an important clinical diagnostic task but very challenging due to the low contrast of surrounding structures in Computed Tomography (CT) and to their varying sizes, poses, shapes and sparsely distributed locations. State-of-the-art studies show the performance range of 52.9% sensitivity at 3.1 false-positives per volume (FP/vol.), or 60.9% at 6.1 FP/vol. for mediastinal LN, by one-shot boosting on 3D HAAR features. In this paper, we first operate a preliminary candidate generation stage, towards -100% sensitivity at the cost of high FP levels (-40 per pat

Resolving the contributions of fatigue-induced migration and scapular reorientation on the subacromial space: an orthopaedic geometric simulation analysis.

Subacromial impingement occurs when tissues interposed between the humeral head and the acromion become compressed between the bones. Two fatigue-related mechanisms are suggested to contribute to this impingement: superior humeral head migration and scapular reorientation, specifically downward rotation, anterior tilt and protraction. Although both mechanisms have received attention, controversy exists regarding their relative contributions to reducing subacromial space width. This simulation study presents a three-dimensional orthopedic model for assessing the spatial relationship between the

Modelling of human walking to optimise the function of ankle-foot orthosis in Guillan-Barré patients with drop foot.

INTRODUCTION: This paper deals with the dynamic modelling of human walking. The main focus of this research was to optimise the function of the orthosis in patients with neuropathic feet, based on the kinematics data from different categories of neuropathic patients. METHODS: The patient's body on the sagittal plane was modelled for calculating the torques generated in joints. The kinematics data required for mathematical modelling of the patients were obtained from the films of patients captured by high speed camera, and then the films were analysed through a motion analysis software. An inv

Velocity Storage Integrator (VSI): Mechanisms, circuits, and clinical implications A narrative review.

The velocity storage integrator (VSI) is a central, gravity-referenced neural network that prolongs and spatially orients vestibular/optokinetic signals beyond semicircular-canal dynamics. Classical systems analyses framed it as a leaky integrator in an indirect pathway, complementing a high-frequency direct pathway that rapidly stabilizes gaze. Converging unit recordings, lesions, and modeling now localize the spatiotemporal core of VSI to commissural vestibular-nuclei networks-particularly vestibular-only (VO) and vestibular-pause-saccade (VPS) populations-under cerebellar nodulus-uvula (NU)

Comprehensive evaluation and application of tissue clearing techniques for 3-D visualization of splenic neural and immune architecture.

As the largest secondary lymphoid organ, the spleen plays a crucial role in initiating and sustaining immune responses against blood-borne pathogens through antigen capture and delivery. It is innervated by both autonomic and sensory nerves, which allows for neural modulation of its immune responses. The intricate spatial structure and precise coordination between immune and neural components are essential for proper splenic function, necessitating three-dimensional (3-D) imaging to reveal its architecture. However, the dense fibrous capsule and exceptionally rich vasculature of the spleen pos

Cortico-basal oscillations index naturalistic movements during deep brain stimulation.

The basal ganglia and sensorimotor cortex are essential nodes of a network that supports motor control. In Parkinson's disease, disruptions in this network lead to rigidity and slowness during movement execution. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the basal ganglia has proved effective in alleviating Parkinson's disease-related hypokinetic symptoms, and sensing-enabled neurostimulators now afford the opportunity to detect cortico-basal oscillations during motion. However, the specific contributions of these motor network nodes to chronic, naturalistic movement and the effects of DBS on circuit dy

Diffusion MRI reveals amyloid plaque-associated cellular signatures through spatial transcriptomic integration.

INTRODUCTION: Amyloid plaque deposition is a defining feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet how plaque-associated cellular alterations are reflected in noninvasive imaging remains unclear. METHODS: We integrated high-resolution diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) with spatial transcriptomics (ST) in an AD mouse model. Spatial correlations were assessed across the whole brain and in disease-control and plaque-non-plaque comparisons. Neural network models were trained to predict AD-associated cell types from dMRI metrics. RESULTS: dMRI metrics showed moderate spatial correlations (r

Experimental and ALO-optimized machine learning interpretable models for pharmaceutical adsorption onto raw bentonite.

Pharmaceutical contamination of aquatic systems poses an increasing environmental concern due to the persistence, bioactivity, and incomplete removal of these compounds by conventional wastewater treatment processes. This study investigates the adsorptive removal of three structurally distinct pharmaceuticals: ketotifen fumarate (KF), doxycycline hyclate (DXC), and nystatin (Nyst), using raw bentonite (RB). By combining batch experiments with an interpretable machine learning (ML) framework, adsorption kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics were evaluated. Additionally, four Ant Lion Optimi

Artificial neural network data fusion-mediated dual-mode sensor based on Fe3O4@PdIr for Salmonellatyphimurium detection in food.

Salmonella Typhimurium (S. typhimurium) is a major foodborne pathogen that poses a serious threat to public health. In this study, a colorimetric/electrochemical dual-mode biosensor assisted by artificial neural network (ANN) was developed for the sensitive detection of S. typhimurium. Fe3O4@PdIr nanocomposites with enhanced peroxidase-like activity and electrochemical performance were prepared and conjugated with an aptamer specific to S. typhimurium to obtain Fe3O4@PdIr-Apt. Through the sandwich binding of Fe3O4@PdIr-Apt and Apt to the target, the nanocomposites were attached to microplates
