The Systolic Anterior Motion After Mitral Valve Repair: A Narrative Review of Current Therapeutic Algorithms in the Operating Room.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Systolic anterior motion (SAM) represents the displacement of the anterior mitral leaflet during ventricular systole toward the interventricular septum, causing an obstruction of the outflow tract. Most of the published data regards the primary SAM that is associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This review was focused on the management of SAM that occurs after mitral valve repair. METHODS: To perform an update about the SAM occurring after mitral valve repair, data published in the last 15 years (2010-2025) were revised. RESULTS: Out of the 354 publications that de

Modelling African Swine Fever Transmission and Epidemiology: A Scoping Review of Mechanistic, Statistical, and Machine Learning Approaches.

African swine fever (ASF) is a viral disease of domestic and wild pigs that has re-emerged as a major transboundary disease. Modelling using mechanistic, statistical, and machine learning (ML) approaches plays a key role in understanding ASF transmission and informing disease control, but the literature remains fragmented. To synthesise global ASF modelling efforts, we systematically reviewed studies applying these three approaches. We examined temporal and geographic trends, modelling objectives, explanatory variables, and model evaluation practices. A total of 151 papers published through 20

Comparison of Olive Versus Fish Oil Based Parenteral Nutrition and Clinical Outcomes-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: It is well-established that earlier generations of lipid emulsions based on soybean oil are inferior to later generations based on olive or fish oil. However, evidence directly comparing between later-generation lipid emulsions is limited. This study aims to systematically review existing literature comparing olive versus fish oil based parenteral nutrition formulations within an inpatient setting, and to evaluate clinical outcomes. METHODS: Electronic databases Medline, Embase, CINAHL and Web of Science were searched from earliest to current date. Titles, abstracts and full texts

Genre bleed, reproduction and the climate crisis in Louisa Hall's Reproduction (2023).

This paper argues that Louisa Hall's Reproduction (2023) represents an example of genre bleed; a text that engages with multiple genres in order to represent the crisis of the contemporary moment. It argues that pregnancy should be read as a form with specific affordances (following Caroline Levine's work), and that such a position has implications for the wider field of medical humanities and specifically literature and medicine where texts are often grouped on the basis of illnesses, disabilities or medical conditions. The paper situates science fiction as a genre that has always had birth a

Extensor Indicis Proprius Transfers Versus Tendon Graft in Extensor Pollicis Longus Reconstruction: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In extensor pollicis longus ruptures not amenable to primary repair, secondary reconstruction of the tendon has traditionally been performed using either extensor indicis transposition or free tendon graft techniques. This paper constitutes a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current literature with a focus on Geldmacher's scoring to identify the effectiveness of these procedures. METHODS: We performed a literature search of medical databases to identify papers fulfilling the inclusion criteria. A meta-analysis abiding by Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews an

Peripheral arterial disease: adverse impacts, disparities in outcomes, and the path ahead.

This is the third paper in the peripheral arterial disease (PAD) Series. The first and second papers in this Series outline that PAD affects over 300 million people worldwide and can be diagnosed by non-invasive tests, as well as that treatment requires medications to reduce modifiable risk factors and that exercise therapy and revascularisation are required in selected patients. In this paper, the devastating effects of PAD at the individual level are described, including chronic pain, functional limitation, loss of independence, impaired physical and mental quality of life, unemployment, and

BioWorkflow: Retrieving comprehensive bioinformatics workflows from publications.

Reconstructing bioinformatics workflows from the literature is the foundation of scientific analysis. However, the required details-processing steps, software tools, versions, and parameter settings-are dispersed across narrative text, tables, figure captions, and supplemental files. Manual reconstruction typically takes hours per paper and is error-prone, while existing question-answering (QA) and retrieval systems focus on local passages and lack the full-text, multimodal capabilities needed to automatically rebuild complete workflows. We introduce BioWorkflow, a large language model (LLM)-b

Biological mechanisms underlying adverse mental health outcome after trauma.

By now it is well known that trauma-related psychiatric disorders are associated with a broad range of biological dysregulations. This special issue focused on research aiming to advance our understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying adverse mental health outcome after trauma, in particular the development of trauma-related disorders and differences in individual susceptibility (i.e. risk or resilience) to their development. We included 51 papers published in EJPT between 2021 and 2023, either directly submitted to the special issue or whose focus clearly fitted the aim of the speci

Clinical priorities to improve the neuropsychological care of individuals with Spina Bifida: A consensus statement of the Spina Bifida Association and the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Neuropsychology Collaborative.

Objective: Spina Bifida (SB) is a medical and neurodevelopmental disability that impacts multiple health and functional systems, including cognitive and neuropsychological functioning. Neuropsychological assessment and monitoring are integral components of SB-related clinical care, as outlined in the Spina Bifida Association's (SBA) Neuropsychological Care Guidelines for People with Spina Bifida. However, practice-based research indicates that access to SB-informed neuropsychological care is limited in the United States. This white paper is intended to address this gap and propose methods to e

[ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE-ASSISTED LITERATURE REVIEW: A CASE STUDY IN FUMARATE HYDRATASE-DEFICIENT RENAL CELL CARCINOMA].

Fumarate hydratase-deficient renal cell carcinoma (FHdRCC) is a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer that presents significant therapeutic challenges. Due to its rarity, treatment decisions often rely on comprehensive literature reviews to identify potential therapeutic options. This article presents a case of a 37-year-old patient with metastatic FHdRCC who showed partial response to Nivolumab but experienced persistent lymphatic involvement and symptoms requiring ongoing intervention. The clinical team sought to evaluate alternative combination therapies through a literature review. Eli

The association between the visceral to subcutaneous abdominal fat ratio and the risk of cardiovascular diseases: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the primary cause of mortality globally. The prevalence of obesity is rising worldwide; there seems to be a significant positive association between obesity and CVDs. The distribution of fat in the abdominal area in the form of visceral (VAT) or subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) affects the risk of CVDs. The aim of the present study was to conduct a systematic review of the available literature regarding the association between the VAT-to-SAT ratio and CVDs. METHODS: A comprehensive search strategy was used to retrieve all human observational stu
