Experimental Research on Schema Modes: Guidelines and Research Agenda.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Schema therapy is an evidence-based treatment for personality disorders (PDs), with 'schema modes' being a core theoretical and clinical concept. Despite their centrality, empirical research into the mechanisms of schema mode activation remains limited. This paper reviews the available research on schema mode activation and provides methodological guidelines and a research agenda to stimulate experimental research on schema modes. RECENT FINDINGS: We identified five published studies that experimentally induced schema modes using a variety of procedures (e.g., stress interv

The Societal Response to Psychopathy in the Community.

The harm usually associated with psychopathy requires therapeutically, legally, and ethically satisfactory solutions. Scholars from different fields have, thus, examined whether empirical evidence shows that individuals with psychopathic traits satisfy concepts, such as responsibility, mental disorder, or disability, that have specific legal or ethical implications. The present paper considers the less discussed issue of whether psychopathy is a disability. As it has been shown for the cases of the responsibility and mental disorder status of psychopathic individuals, we argue that it is undec

[Systematic review of evidence on the association between personality and tinnitus].

Some studies indicate that personality characteristics may influence the perception of tinnitus. OBJECTIVE: To assess the scientific evidence of the association between tinnitus and personality. METHODS: A systematic review of the following databases: PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and Web of Knowledge. Only studies of patients older than 18 years published in English, Portu

Exploring Gender Differences in Adolescent Psychiatric Disorders: A Decade of Research.

Background: Adolescence is a developmental phase characterised by profound biological, emotional and social changes and these changes make adolescents particularly vulnerable to the emergence of psychiatric disorders. In this context, gender differences in mental health disorders are of increasing clinical interest. Method: We conducted a scoping review of the literature regarding gender differences in psychiatric disorders during adolescence. Three databases, PubMed, Web of Science and EBSCO, were used to identify articles published in English from 2015 until 2025. Twenty-one studies fulfille

Psychopathology in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prevalence.

Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder appear to experience high levels of psychological distress, yet little is known about the prevalence of psychological disorders in this population. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the proportion of these parents who experience clinically significant psychopathology. Articles reporting proportions of psychological disorders in a sample of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder were located. The initial search returned 25,988 articles. Thirty-one studies with a total sample of 9208 parents were inclu

Joint hypermobility and the heritable disorders of connective tissue: clinical and empirical evidence of links with psychiatry.

OBJECTIVE: The heritable disorders of connective tissue (HDCTs) are a group of genetic disorders affecting connective tissue matrix proteins. Fragility, laxity of tissues and joint hypermobility (JH) are commons features of HDCT for which the prognosis may range from benign to life threatening. JH and HDCTs, especially joint hypermobility syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and Marfan syndrome, have been associated with psychiatric symptomatology. We explored the existing knowledge concerning this association in order to provide an overview of mental disorders linked to JH/HDCT, as well as the h

[Adjustment disorders in children, first hospitalized for hematological malignancies].

OBJECTIVE: In the structure of oncological diseases of childhood, blood diseases occupy a leading position (40%). According to some researchers, the prevalence of mental disorders among patients with oncohematological pathology is very high, regardless of the age of patients. The aim of this work was to identify clinical/dynamic and typological characteristics of mental disorders in children with hematological malignancies as well as the factors predisposing to these disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 96 children (63 boys and 33 girls), aged 3-12 years, with hematological mal

[Differentiated types of chronic agoraphobia].

The study included 60 patients aged 18-65 years with anxious-phobic disorder (APD)--agoraphobia with and without panic disorders. Diagnosis of the disease was performed according to ICD-10. It was established that dynamics and outcome of APD with stable agoraphobia depend on some comorbid psychic disorders (neurotic, nonpsychotic affective, personality disorders, slow-progredient schizophrenia). Influence of such disorders on APD depends on level of realization of the comorbid correlations: symptomatic (nondelirious hypochondria) and intersyndromal ones (affective and personal disorders as wel

Predictors of persistence of anxiety disorders across the lifespan: a systematic review.

Despite the substantial disease burden of anxiety disorders, physicians have a poor understanding of factors that predict their typical persistent course. This systematic review of predictors of persistent anxiety disorders covered 48 studies with 29 690 patients diagnosed with an anxiety disorder that were published in PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science between Jan 1, 1980 (introduction of DSM-III), and Dec 1, 2019. We also compared predictors between children, adolescents, adults, and older adults (ie, ≥55 years). A persistent course was primarily predicted by clinical and psychological ch

Dissociative disorders in DSM-5.

The rationale, research literature, and proposed changes to the dissociative disorders and conversion disorder in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) are presented. Dissociative identity disorder will include reference to possession as well as identity fragmentation, to make the disorder more applicable to culturally diverse situations. Dissociative amnesia will include dissociative fugue as a subtype, since fugue is a rare disorder that always involves amnesia but does not always include confused wandering or loss of personality identity. The representation of movement disorders in fictional literature.

This review considers novels, plays and poems dealing with movement disorders in order to show the relevance in the literary context. The motifs are arranged and compared following a modern neurological nosology according to Parkinson syndromes, dystonia, myoclonus, tics, hemifacial spasm, Tourette syndrome, Huntington's disease and hyperekplexia. There is considerable variety in how movement disorders are depicted and how much influence they have on the plot structures. Their usage ranges from a brief reference in order to accentuate aspects of a character's personality or social position, su

Bipolar II disorder: symptoms, course, and response to treatment.

The authors provide an overview of the diagnosis, course, and treatment of bipolar II disorder, a distinct subtype that is often misdiagnosed as unipolar depression or bipolar I disorder. They discuss research suggesting that underdiagnosis of bipolar II disorder reflects a failure to identify subthreshold expression of mania (hypomania). The course of bipolar II disorder is different from that of bipolar I disorder or unipolar depression, with distinct differences in rates of recovery, clinical features, and number of episodes. The risk of suicide appears to be particularly elevated. High rat
