Anemia and anti-tuberculosis treatment outcome in persons with pulmonary tuberculosis: A multi-center prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major plague of humanity. People with TB (PWTB) are commonly anemic. Here, we assessed whether the severity of anemia in PWTB prior to anti-TB treatment (ATT) was a risk factor for an unfavorable outcome. METHODS: Patients ≥ 18 years old with culture-confirmed drug-susceptible pulmonary TB enrolled between 2015 and 2019 in a multi-center Brazilian cohort were followed for up to 24 months and classified according to anemia severity (mild, moderate, and severe), based on hemoglobin levels. A multinomial logistic regression model was employed to assess whe

Atom Search Optimization with Deep Learning Enabled Arabic Sign Language Recognition for Speaking and Hearing Disability Persons.

Sign language has played a crucial role in the lives of impaired people having hearing and speaking disabilities. They can send messages via hand gesture movement. Arabic Sign Language (ASL) recognition is a very difficult task because of its high complexity and the increasing intraclass similarity. Sign language may be utilized for the communication of sentences, letters, or words using diverse signs of the hands. Such communication helps to bridge the communication gap between people with hearing impairment and other people and also makes it easy for people with hearing impairment to express

Validity and reliability of the 3-meter backward walk test in mildly disabled persons with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: One of the biggest problems for persons with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) is dizziness, poor posture, and balance problems that cause injury-causing falls. The aim of our study was to reveal the test-retest reliability and validity of the 3-Meter Backward Walk Test (3MBWT) in mildly disabled PwMS. METHODS: This study included a total of 93 mildly disabled PwMS with mean EDSS of 1.89. 3MBWT, Functional Access Test (FRT), Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), Timed 25-Foot Walk (T25FW), and Timed-Up and Go (TUG) were applied to the patients. To measure test-retest reliability, a second evaluation

Models of care for gender dysphoria in young persons: How Psychiatry lost and is finding its voice.

Globally, models of care for young persons with gender dysphoria differ across jurisdictions. Historically, developed countries have utilised the medical approach. More recently, broader models that place a greater emphasis on psychological interventions are emerging. This piece utilizes the Australian experience to compare models of care for gender dysphoria. Reflecting on the relative passivity of Psychiatry to date, historical reasons for this silence are explored. As relative experts in relationship dynamics and key bearers of the history of sexual health diagnoses, it is proposed that Psy

Community perspectives on how decentralising an emergency shelter influences transportation needs and use for persons experiencing homelessness.

Despite steady increases in homelessness in the U.S., only recently has research on transportation needs and use for persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) been the focus of research endeavours. Moreover, limited research has identified how the geographic relocation of homeless community services and resources impacts the transportation needs of PEH and how this process affects access to health and social services. To fill this gap in the literature, using a community-engaged research approach, we conducted a qualitative research study in which 24 professionals working in planning, transporta

Viral Breakthrough Episodes Among Persons with HIV in Care in Alberta, Canada: Clinical and Public Health Implications.

Unsuppressed HIV viremia damages immunity and increases the risk for secondary HIV transmission. Successful engagement of persons with HIV (PWH) into care resulting in viral suppression is vital. PWH already engaged in care, who, after achieving viral suppression, experience viral breakthrough episodes (VBEs) with a sequence of suppressed/unsuppressed/suppressed viral loads remain problematic. We examined the frequency and outcomes of PWH experiencing VBE. HIV care is provided at no cost to all patients under Alberta's universal health program. All PWH followed at Southern Alberta Clinic, Cana

Pharmacists' role in diabetes management for persons with lived experience of homelessness in Canada: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Persons with lived experience of homelessness face many challenges in managing diabetes, including purchasing and storing medications, procuring healthy food and accessing healthcare services. Prior studies have found that pharmacy-led interventions for diabetes improved A1C, and lowered blood pressure and cholesterol in general populations. This study evaluated how select pharmacists in Canada have tailored their practices to serve persons with lived experiences of homelessness with diabetes. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study using open-ended interviews with

"There were no words": Older LGBTQ+ persons' experiences of finding and claiming their gender and sexual identities.

This article explores how older Canadian LGBTQ+ persons' gender and sexual identities evolved over time and were influenced by language, role models, and significant others. We draw on data from a qualitative interview study with 30 LGBTQ+ older adults. We analyze our data thematically, finding three overarching themes, namely: a) Lacking language and role models, b) Drawn and pushed out of the closet, and c) Current fluidities and future concerns. Our participants reported that, earlier in life, they had lacked language or positive frameworks with which to make sense of their identities. Upon

Ensuring equitable transportation for the disadvantaged: Paratransit usage by persons with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Paratransit services developed under the Americans with Disabilities Act are a critical transportation means for persons with disabilities to meet their basic needs, but the COVID-19 pandemic posed an unprecedented challenge to service providers. To safeguard transportation equity, this study used complete records of service trips and riders obtained from the Access Transportation Program in the Seattle region for an empirical analysis aimed at answering two research questions. First, how did the ridership and trip purposes of paratransit change after the outbreak of COVID-19? Second, what fac

An 8-week aerobic cycling intervention elicits improved gait velocity and biomechanics in persons with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown if improvements in gait velocity following an aerobic cycling intervention are accompanied by improved gait biomechanics in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) or if gait abnormalities are exaggerated in response to increased velocity. Research question Can an 8-week aerobic cycling intervention elicit improvements in locomotor function in individuals with mild to moderate PD? METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from a randomized clinical trial was conducted in individuals with mild to moderate idiopathic PD (N = 28). Participants were randomized to an aerobi

Congenital physical anomalies associated with deceased persons in reincarnation cases with intermissions of less than nine months.

A literature review of reincarnation cases with identified previous persons found 36 cases in which the "intermission" between lives was less than 9 months. In 9 cases, it was 7 days or fewer. In 32 cases, subjects had birthmarks or birth defects matching the previous person's wounds or other scars in location and appearance. Multiple anomalies appeared in 20 (62.5%) of the 32 cases with physical anomalies. There were 9 natural-death cases and 27 violent-death cases. In 15 (55.5%) of the violent-death cases, there was written documentation of wounds to the previous person. The most extreme bir

Abusive episodes among home-dwelling persons with dementia and their informal caregivers: a cross-sectional Norwegian study.

BACKGROUND: Elder abuse is a serious issue with a global prevalence of 15.7% in the community setting. Persons with dementia are at higher risk of elder abuse than the older population in general. With a high and increasing prevalence of dementia this issue cannot be neglected. Hence, the aims of this study were 1) to describe the proportion of abusive episodes among home-dwelling persons with dementia and their informal caregivers, and 2) to explore differences between informal caregivers who have reported committing and not committing abusive acts. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was cond
