INTRODUCTION: Though communities have featured recovery housing (RH) for several decades, the base of evidence for best practices continues to grow - especially evidence needed by, and known to, those who operate and receive these services. The Initiative for Justice and Emerging Adult Populations (JEAP) engaged with three community boards (CBs) - consisting of young adults with experience in recovery from substance use issues, people who have a history of criminal legal system involvement and recovery, and payers and provider of substance use services and harm reduction - to understand on-the

Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) plays a role in substance use related neurotoxicity and addictive phenotypes. Inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production can prevent negative phenotypes associated with drugs intake. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an endogenous inhibitor of NOS. ADMA levels are regulated by dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase type 1 (DDAH1). Numerous evidence suggests that drugs of abuse can increase DDAH1 levels, leading to reduction of ADMA levels, and in turn, causing neurotoxicity associated with NO overproduction. Yet, this data is sparse, and very little mechanistic

INTRODUCTION: Harm reduction is a philosophical approach to improve the health of people who use drugs (PWUD) that integrates risk reduction, evidence-based treatment, and person-centered care. Specialty substance use treatment programs have historically been siloed from, and often misaligned with, harm reduction principles, but this trend has begun to shift in recent years. This study explored the ways in which some specialty treatment settings are adopting harm reduction principles and practices.
METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with leaders of 14 New Jersey specialty treatment

Currently, worldwide millions of individuals, athletes, and non-athletes, of different ages and probably of all social genders (cisgender males and females, male to female (MtF) and female to male (FtM) transgenders, etc.), are current or former androgenic anabolic steroids (AAS) abusers. AAS abuse is associated with seriously increased short- and long-term risks for general, reproductive and sexual health. Indeed, to improve the knowledge and health of the population at risk of AAS misuse and standardize the current clinical practice concerning the health risks of such abuse, it is essential

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Family involvement is increasingly recognised as important to the treatment and recovery of individuals with substance use disorders. While affected family members (AFMs) can play a critical role in enhancing treatment engagement and improving outcomes, there is limited understanding of their characteristics and how these relate to whether their relative with substance use problems (RSU) is receiving treatment. This study examines factors associated with the treatment status of RSU, based on reports from and characteristics of AFMs who sought support through a public

Memory is a cornerstone of human behavior, and addiction offers a compelling model of its persistence and plasticity. The scope of engram research has rapidly expanded to include addiction-related phenomena. Addiction-related memories, like strong aversive memories, are often highly resistant to extinction and can continue to drive relapse long after drug use has ceased. These enduring behavioral effects suggest that drug engrams, sparsely distributed neural ensembles encoding drug-associated experiences, are stabilized by powerful synaptic and molecular plasticity. At the same time, their ver

"Brat culture," an aesthetic that revives early-2000s fashion, attitudes, and behaviors (e.g., smoking, drinking, and drug use) framed as rebellious and socially defiant, has emerged as a defining lifestyle among youth. Brat culture is marked by a confident, unapologetic tone that equates substance use with self-expression and non-conformity. The increasing depiction of risky behaviors in popular media-particularly among adolescents-necessitates more accurate substance-use assessments in clinical settings. Current tools and protocols may fall short in addressing this cultural shift. Providers

Drug cue reactivity (DCR) is the most widely applied fMRI task in addiction neuroscience, yet its translational potential remains limited by unresolved methodological and clinical heterogeneity. In this systematic review and activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of 92 fMRI studies comprising 3647 participants, we examined how design-related factors (fMRI design, control condition valence, stimulus matching) and clinical factors (treatment compliance, drug use severity, common substance classes) shape neural DCR. Beyond identifying the core DCR pattern and its meta-analytic conne

BACKGROUND: Despite growing evidence that racial discrimination is associated with substance use among Black Americans, the existing research on Black college students has not been synthesized. In response, this scoping review investigated the state of research on racial discrimination and substance use among Black college students in the United States (U.S.).
METHODS: Using PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines, we searched 23 databases and screened 254 non-duplicative titles and abstracts published from earliest records to December 2022. We extracted key study characteristics and described result

Unhealthy substance use and physical inactivity are prevalent co-occurring risk factors for morbidity and mortality among people with HIV (PWH). Evidence-based exercise interventions targeting both risk factors are limited. We conducted a literature search across seven databases for relevant articles published through 05/07/24. Studies qualified if they involved: (a) PWH ≥ 18 years old who engage in unhealthy substance use; (b) randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-experimental designs; and (c) an exercise intervention. Two researchers independently completed the Cochrane Data Collectio

Evidence suggests that exercise may be an effective adjunct to recovery processes associated with addiction; however, little research has been conducted outside clinical settings. This article is based on a Canadian carnal sociological study that investigated the evolution of the runner's habitus amongst 11 individuals in recovery from addiction through mobile methods, specifically running interviews, with data deductively analysed through conceptual categories. Running offered a lifestyle structure that supported a nonlinear healing process, fostering connections that stood in stark contrast

This qualitative study aimed to understand the intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, community, and public policy resources that peer support workers (PSWs) in the substance use disorder (SUD) recovery field perceive as helpful in supporting their efforts. Twenty-five PSWs participated in semistructured interviews designed to elicit their experiences and perspectives on resources that currently support or could better support their work. PSWs had a mean age of 49.3 years (SD = 12.9) and were primarily cisgender women (n = 16, 64%) and White (n = 20, 80%). Interviews were audio-recorded

OBJECTIVES: Pain is a risk factor for substance use and can negatively affect outcomes of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. Menstrual pain is common among menstruating women yet has received little attention in the substance use literature. This study aimed to characterize menstrual pain and explore the association between menstrual pain and substance use in women receiving SUD treatment.
METHODS: Participants in SUD inpatient treatment were recruited for a cross-sectional self-report survey study. The current analyses focused on participants who reported a menstrual cycle in the past 6

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal violence (IV) has an extensive and profound impact on health, representing a public health concern. Different health outcomes have been identified based on the characteristics of the survivor and the abuser, their relationship, the type of violence perpetrated, and the cumulative effect of multiple violent experiences.
OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to estimate the likelihood of negative health outcomes, such as substance abuse, mental health, and somatic disorders, occurring in adults presenting a clinical suspicion of IV.
METHODS: We performed a r

There is a high individual, family, community, and societal cost to substance use disorder (SUD). However, the real cost is the loss of lives. Nurses have an important role in combating the SUD epidemic. Nurses work in a variety of settings and have opportunities to interact with patients and families experiencing SUDs. These findings are part of a larger qualitative study that examined nurses' personal and professional experiences in caring for people with SUD and their families. This article reports on the nurses' experiences of challenges faced, treatment opportunities, and advice for nurse

Alcohol, tobacco, and drug misuse continue to rise globally, with adolescents at particular risk. In response, school-based prevention programs have been widely implemented, yet their efficacy and long-term impact remain under-discussed. This scoping review synthesised evidence on the effectiveness of three commonly used programs (Preventure, Unplugged, and IPSYcare) in Europe. A search of four databases (PubMed, Embase, PsycInfo, and Web of Science) identified 21 peer-reviewed articles published between 2008 and 2023, spanning 12 European countries. Unplugged was most frequently evaluated (10

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic. It is clinically used as a surgical anesthetic or anesthetic inducer and has a certain degree of mental dependence. Its abuse can lead to nerve damage, adverse emotional reactions and other toxic side effects. The primary mechanism by which ketamine exerts its pharmacological effects is to block N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDAR). It also functions through pathways such as α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isox-azolepropionic acid receptors (AMPAR), opioid receptors, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, monoaminergic receptors, cholinergic receptors, hype

Addiction is a chronically relapsing disease characterized by drug intoxication, craving, bingeing, and withdrawal with loss of control. An expanding body of literature has suggested that non-substance addictions, such as internet addiction and pathological gambling, exhibit shared clinical, phenomenological, and biological features with substance-based addictions. With the development of imaging technology in the past three decades, neuroimaging studies have yielded critical insights into the neurobiological implications of substance and non-substance addictions, revealing neurochemical and f

Background In the Indian context, there is no recent data on substance use among school students. We report on the pattern of substance use and associated factors among school students in a cross-sectional nationwide survey conducted in 10 cities of India. Methods From each city, data from 200 students each from three schools (urban-government, urban-private, rural school) were collected. Within each school, a section from each grade (VIII, IX, and XI/XII) was randomly selected. Finally, 5920 students (boys 52.4%, mean [SD] age 14.7 [1.6] years) self-administered the questionnaire in the class

Medication adherence is essential to achieve sustained viral suppression for individuals living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The use of alcohol and substances may interfere with medication adherence and lead to adverse outcomes. Thus, this review sought to examine the literature on behavioral interventions that improve medication adherence among individuals with HIV who are using alcohol or drugs. Articles were included if they met the following criteria: (a) included individuals diagnosed with HIV (b) were published in English between January 1, 2000 and June 15, 2023, (c) evaluat
