The androgen receptor gene (AR) contains a domain which includes a variable number of CAG sequences and alleles with low numbers of CAG repeats show high transactivation activity when complexed with testosterone. The ratio of 2nd and 4th digit length (2D:4D) is negatively correlated with phenotypic effects of testosterone. Low numbers of CAG repeats and low 2D:4D are both associated with high sperm numbers and protection against breast cancer. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this clinical study was to determine the effects of sex steroids on behavior and mood in adolescents with hypogonadism.
STUDY DESIGN: The experimental design consisted of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial lasting for 21 months. The study group consisted of 39 boys and 16 girls recruited from a pediatric endocrine clinic for delayed puberty. Depo-testosterone (to boys) or conjugated estrogens (to girls) was administered in 3-month blocks, alternating with placebo, at 3 dose levels approximating early, middle, and late pubertal amounts.

OBJECTIVE: A 5 1/2-year-old boy presenting with virilization was diagnosed as having classic 21-hydroxylase deficiency complicated by an adrenal tumor. We attempted to document a reduction in the size of the tumor with glucocorticoid therapy.

In an analysis of 263 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), 91 (35%) of whom were obese (body mass index greater than 25 kg/m2), it was found that obese women with PCOS were more likely to be anovulatory and had a higher prevalence of hirsutism than the non-obese subgroup. The influence of molybdenum and molybdenum plus sulphate-induced copper deficiencies on semen quality and peripheral plasma testosterone concentrations in South African Mutton Merino rams was investigated. All animals received an identical ration, supplemented with molybdenum in one group (M) and molybdenum plus sulphate in another (MS) while the control group (C) received additional copper supplementation. After almost a year on these rations, rams in Group MS produced ejaculates of lower volume, lower sperm concentration, poorer sperm motility and morphology than rams of the other 2 groups.

An alternative program for medical castration for treatment of prostate cancer has been developed using a progestational antiandrogen, megestrol acetate (MA), in combination with small doses of diethylstilbestrol (DES; 0.1 mg/day). Incubation studies have been carried out using normal breast tissue and breast tissue from patients with gynecomastia, mammary dysplasia and breast carcinoma to determine the pattern of androstenedione metabolism. The effect of suppression of gonadotropin secretion was evaluated in 21 patients with the polycystic ovary syndrome. Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) was administered intramuscularly in a dose of 400 mg every 15 days for 9 months. A significant decrease in luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone levels (70 and 40%, respectively) was apparent after 3 months. Twelve female patients undergoing intermittent hemodialysis (HD) and 5 females posttransplantation (PT) were studied. All the HD patients had menstrual disturbances and 5 had galactorrhea. The mean basal LH level was significantly elevated (p less than .05) in patients on HD compared to normal controls, but the mean LH response to luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LRH) was not significantly different from the control group. Mean basal FSH and the FSH response to LRH was normal. In the PT pateints the LH response to LRH was significantly greater at 120 min when compared to normal females.
