The development of permanent incisor teeth of sheep was followed from the age of six weeks to 116 weeks. The teeth were observed through the bud, cap and bell stages, and the development of enamel and dentine. At the same time that amelogenesis started, the papillary layer developed from the intermediate layer and the outer dental epithelium began to form the cell rests of Malassez. The ameloblasts went through secretory, transitional and maturational phases, and in due course disappeared, after which cementum was laid down over the enamel surface. Initially the connective tissue of the follic

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of premature delivery and birth weight (BW) on primary tooth eruption.
METHODS: A total of 2,230 children aged 3 to 36 months from urban and rural areas in Beijing, China, were classified for analysis by gestational age at delivery (89 preterm and 2,141 full term) and BW (low, normal and high). The tooth eruption status of these children was examined and recorded every 3 months.
RESULTS: The timing of first primary tooth eruption was significantly delayed in preterm infants (8.4 months versus 7.3 months for full term; P < 0.05). Furthermore, the number of te

INTRODUCTION: Mechanical debridement plays an important role in eliminating intracanal bacteria, such as biofilm on the canal walls and bacteria in the dentinal tubules. Mechanical debridement is not recommended for root canal disinfection in revascularization/revitalization therapy. Here we report a failed revascularization/revitalization case, which could be due to inadequate root canal disinfection without mechanical removal of biofilm and bacteria in dentinal tubules.
METHODS: A 6-year-old boy had a traumatic injury to tooth #9, which was avulsed and replanted within 40 minutes. The tooth

Upriver spawning migration of starving Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) involves drastic skeletal alterations, among which a toothless stage followed by the appearance of a new set of so-called breeding teeth has been described. To investigate this phenomenon, we examined the patterns of tooth replacement on the lower jaws in different life stages of wild animals before and after spawning. Prior to spawning, every position held either a functional or a replacement tooth, both in first-time (grilse) and repetitive (salmon) spawners. Teeth were in a similar developmental stage every three positions

The normal arrangement of the transseptal fibers in the dentition is one of a completely horizontal system that links the mesial and the distal aspects of each tooth within the dental arch, from the most distal tooth of one side to the most distal tooth of the other, across the midline. This continuous fiber band is parallel to the occlusal plane, being attached to each tooth coronal to the level of the interradicular alveolar bone crest and apical to the cementoenamel junction. Alteration of the occlusal plane will be mirrored by a similar change in the plane of the transseptal fiber system.

We examined the effect of function on tooth and periodontal ligament (PDL) morphology in 40 lower incisors of adult female rats. Ten teeth were exposed to occlusal hyperfunction for three months, ten to hypofunction for three weeks, ten to hypofunction for three months, while ten teeth in normal occlusion served as control. Transverse ground sections were cut at various levels perpendicular to the tooth long axis, and their distances from the apex were calculated. The outlines of the tissues were traced and fed into a computer. We plotted the measurements according to their location and fitted

Tooth development and replacement in fetal and adult viviparous caecilians (Amphibia: Gymnophiona) are described and analyzed according to current theories of tooth succession. The fetal dentition differs from that of the adult in morphology, position, and function. Teeth are used by fetuses to scrape the oviducal epithelium, thus stimulating the secretion of a nutrient substance. Fetal dentitions vary in morphology and position in different species. The ontogeny of teeth of several species is described and the patterns of addition of loci and of replacement are analyzed. Loci are added both p

A case of delayed differentiation and/or calcification, that is, development, followed by accelerated growth of the maxillary second premolars is presented. This condition was accompanied by the congenital absence of mandibular second premolars even though maxillary and mandibular third molar germs were present. The case was followed over a five-year period. It seems that agenesis of any tooth might be found in conjunction with delay in development of any other tooth. Moreover, full development of a tooth germ (followed by an accelerated growth) as well as pathological changes may occur, despi

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the main treatment for dentigerous cysts. Although the treatment concept has shifted from radical lesion removal to function‑preserving strategies, surgical trauma and related risks are still hard to avoid completely. The strategy of spontaneous fenestration may be preferred in a few dentigerous cysts in children.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old boy was referred because of the delayed eruption of a left mandibular posterior tooth. Panoramic radiographic examination revealed a well-defined radiolucent area measuring approximately 22 × 18 mm around the crown of the left m

OBJECTIVE: Marginal alveolar bone loss is one of the key features of periodontitis and can be observed via panoramic radiographs. This study aimed to establish a cascading learning method with deep learning (DL) for precise radiographic bone loss (RBL) measurements at specific tooth positions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Through the design of two tasks for tooth position recognition and tooth semantic segmentation using the SegFormer model, specific tooth's crown, intrabony portion, and suprabony portion of the roots were obtained. The RBL was subsequently measured by length through these three ar

UNLABELLED: By definition, supplemental teeth are supernumerary teeth (ST) resembling adjacent teeth at the end of a tooth series and are well aligned in the arch. A case of the non-syndrome, supplemental type of supernumerary lateral incisor is presented, along with an unusual habit that was noted accidentally in the same child. In the present case, of the two lateral incisors, the mesial supplemental lateral incisor was causing an impaction of 11. In addition, the patient was aesthetically concerned. So, the decision was made to extract the supplemental tooth with altered morphology (mesial

AIM: The aim of this report is to present a clinical case of impaction of a maxillary left central incisor in a mixed dentition caused by the presence of an odontoma as well as a review of the pertinent dental literature.
BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the normal tooth eruption patterns is essential for the identification and appropriate treatment of deviations in eruption that may endanger physiologic development. A delay in time between the exfoliation of a deciduous tooth and the eruption of its permanent successor may be related to a disorder known as dental retention. This occurs when tooth er

Tooth replacement poses many questions about development, pattern formation, tooth attachment mechanisms, functional morphology and the evolution of vertebrate dentitions. Although most vertebrate species have polyphyodont dentitions, detailed knowledge of tooth structure and replacement is poor for most groups, particularly actinopterygians. We examined the oral dentition of the bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix, a pelagic and coastal marine predator, using a sample of 50 individuals. The oral teeth are located on the dentary and premaxillary bones, and we scored each tooth locus in the dentary a
