Successful radiofrequency catheter ablation of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome in a patient with dextrocardia: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Dextrocardia is a congenital heart malformation with a low incidence that occurs in only 1 in 10,000-12,000 people. Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a congenital condition with additional accessory pathways between the atria and the ventricle, which affects up to three in 1,000 people worldwide. Experience of radiofrequency catheter ablation in patients with WPW syndrome and dextrocardia is scarce due to its rare incidence. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old female was hospitalized due to two episodes of palpitations in the latest 2 months. The morphology of the P-QRS-T compl

Expression profile and the G63A mutation of IGF2 gene associated with growth traits in Zhedong-White goose.

Insulin-like growth factors 2 (IGF2) is an insulin-like growth factor that plays a major role in animal growth, cell proliferation and differentiation, as well as reproduction. IGF2 is well-known to be a candidate gene of growth and reproductive traits in many agricultural animals. Our previous study revealed that the G63A (Chr2: G26541617A) mutation within IGF2 exon 1 showed a significant association with egg numbers (E180d) of Sanhua goose population (p < 0.05). However, little work focus on the correlation between the IGF2 mutations and goose growth traits. In this study, qPCR indicated tha

Chitosan-ZnO nanocomposite coating for inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes on the surface and within white brined cheese.

Several types of cheeses including white brined cheese have been linked to listeriosis outbreaks worldwide. This study aimed to (i) investigate the in vitro inhibitory activity of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) at concentrations of 0.0125-0.1% against three Listeria monocytogenes strains at 10 or 37°C, (ii) evaluate the antimicrobial efficiency of chitosan-based coating containing 1.0% ZnO NPs against L. monocytogenes on the surface or inside vacuum-packaged white brined cheese at 4 or 10°C, and iii) determine the migration of ZnO NPs from the surface to the interior of cheeses using ene

Resistance to Crayfish Plague: Assessing the Response of Native Iberian Populations of the White-Clawed Freshwater Crayfish.

Crayfish plague, caused by the oomycete pathogen Aphanomyces astaci, is one of the most devastating of the emerging infectious diseases. This disease is responsible for the decline of native European and Asian freshwater crayfish populations. Over the last few decades, some European crayfish populations were reported to display partial to total resistance to the disease. The immune response in these cases was similar to that exhibited by the natural carriers of the pathogen, North American freshwater crayfish, e.g., weak-to-strong melanization of colonizing hyphae. We tested the degree of resi

The influence of hemorrhagic shock on ocular microcirculation by obtained by laser speckle flowgraphy in a white rabbit model.

PURPOSE: To clarify the continuous changes in the retinal vessels' and choroid's microcirculation during hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation in a rabbit model. METHODS: Hemorrhagic shock by the removal of blood (30 mL) and resuscitation by a blood-return technique was induced in anesthetized male New Zealand White rabbits (n = 10). We evaluated the retinal vessel blood flow (relative flow volume: RFV) and choroidal blood flow (mean blur rate in the choroid area: MBR-CH) by laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG), with simultaneous measurements of systemic hemodynamics and laboratory parameters. White matter correlates of impulsivity in frontal lobe and their associations with treatment response in first-episode schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: It is known that increased impulsivity in schizophrenia patients causes poor treatment outcomes by increasing cost, stigma, hospitalization, treatment challenge, and physical harm. Dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex appears to be involved in the impulsivity associated with schizophrenia; nonetheless, there is a dearth of research on specific white matter alterations in the prefrontal cortex related to impulsivity. METHODS: We enrolled in the present study 119 first-episode schizophrenia patients. We measured their symptom severity at baseline and after eight weeks of treatment,

The Influence of Epigenetic Modifications on Metabolic Changes in White Adipose Tissue and Liver and Their Potential Impact in Exercise.

Background: Epigenetic marks are responsive to a wide variety of environmental stimuli and serve as important mediators for gene transcription. A number of chromatin modifying enzymes orchestrate epigenetic responses to environmental stimuli, with a growing body of research examining how changes in metabolic substrates or co-factors alter epigenetic modifications. Scope of Review: Here, we provide a systematic review of existing evidence of metabolism-related epigenetic changes in white adipose tissue (WAT) and the liver and generate secondary hypotheses on how exercise may impact metabolism-r

Virulence of "white-gray-opaque" tri-stable transformation in clinical Candida albicans in vitro and in vivo.

The study aimed to induce the white-opaque-gray tri-stable transformation in clinical C. albicans and to explore their potential pathogenicity. Sixty-four clinical strains were used to induce the white, opaque and gray cells of C. albicans. Secreted aspartyl proteinases (Sap) activity of the three phenotypes was then measured, and a vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) animal model was constructed. Of the 64 clinical strains, only 3 strains successfully underwent white-gray-opaque tri-stable transformation, and the three strains all belonged to MTL homozygous strains. Pz values in white, opaque and

From black to white: A roadmap to containing the rise of candidiasis amidst COVID-19 and mucormycosis in India.

With numbers of active COVID-19 cases in India falling in recent weeks and the healthcare system finally showing signs of coping with the mucormycosis epidemic, several new reports of COVID-19 cases linked to "white fungus" have emerged. This has led to rising concern with the potential to stretch the capacity of an already burdened healthcare system. Moreover, the implications of this disease in the COVID-19 population and its consequences on the health and socio-economic structure of the country have not been vastly studied. This commentary explores the need for government efforts in the con

A history of previous childbirths is linked to women's white matter brain age in midlife and older age.

Maternal brain adaptations occur in response to pregnancy, but little is known about how parity impacts white matter and white matter ageing trajectories later in life. Utilising global and regional brain age prediction based on multi-shell diffusion-weighted imaging data, we investigated the association between previous childbirths and white matter brain age in 8,895 women in the UK Biobank cohort (age range = 54-81 years). The results showed that number of previous childbirths was negatively associated with white matter brain age, potentially indicating a protective effect of parity on white

Composition of the white precipitate formed on the surface of damaged triacetyl cellulose-based motion picture films.

To achieve a better understanding of the "vinegar syndrome" phenomenon, which has caused serious damage to triacetyl cellulose-based motion picture films, the white powder obtained from damaged film surfaces was analysed in this study. The powder was found to be soluble in acetone, diethyl ether, dimethylformamide, and chloroform, but insoluble in water. From the results of 1H, 13C and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray fluorescence measurements, it was concluded that the white precipitate had a molecular weight of 326 amu and was composed of triphenyl ph

Association between white matter organization and cognitive performance in athletes with a history of sport-related concussion.

INTRODUCTION: Impairments in cognitive performance after sport-related concussion (SRC) typically resolve within weeks of the injury, whereas alterations to white matter (WM) organization have been found to persist longer into the chronic injury stage. However, longer-term associations between cognition and WM organization following SRC have not been studied. The objective of this study was to compare WM organization and cognitive performance in collegiate athletes an average of almost 4 years post-SRC to athletes with no history of SRC. METHOD: National Collegiate Athletic Association Divisi

Development of a Mathematical Model to Estimate the Cost-Effectiveness of HRSA's Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.

BACKGROUND: The Health Resources and Services Administration's Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program provides services to more than half of all people diagnosed with HIV in the United States. We present and validate a mathematical model that can be used to estimate the long-term public health and cost impact of the federal program. METHODS: We developed a stochastic, agent-based model that reflects the current HIV epidemic in the United States. The model simulates everyone's progression along the HIV care continuum, using 2 network-based mechanisms for HIV transmission: injection drug use and sexual co

The association of cortisol curve features with incident diabetes among whites and African Americans: The CARDIA study.

INTRODUCTION: A flatter diurnal cortisol curve has been associated with incident diabetes among older white adults. However, this relationship has not been examined among middle-aged individuals or African Americans [AA]. We analyzed the longitudinal association of baseline diurnal cortisol curve features with incident diabetes over a 10 year period in a cohort of AA and white participants who were, on average, 40 years old. METHODS: Salivary cortisol was collected immediately post-awakening, then subsequently 45 min, 2.5 h, 8 h, and 12 h later, as well as at bedtime. Cortisol curve features

Ultradian and Infradian Rhythms in the Dynamic of Testosterone Concentration in the Serum of the White-Breasted Hedgehog Erinaceus roumanicus.

The aim of the study was to identify ultradian (intraday) and infradian (multi-day) rhythms in the dynamics of testosterone concentration in the blood serum of white-breasted hedgehogs. Blood sampling was performed from the femoral veins of 12 male hedgehogs. We found ultradian rhythms of testosterone on both sampling dates-March 7-8 (a day length of 11 hours and 15 minutes) and May 10-11 (a day length of 16 hours). An 8-hour rhythm of testosterone concentration has been established. The acrophases were at the same times in both photoperiods and thus independent of sunset times. The study of t
