First-principles-based microkinetic modeling of methanol steam reforming over Cu(111) and Cu(211): structure sensitive activity and selectivity.

The development of hydrogen energy is widely recognized as a key approach to addressing the energy and carbon emission challenges. Methanol steam reforming is a promising hydrogen production scheme that can provide high-purity hydrogen. In this work, we studied the primary reaction mechanisms of methanol steam reforming over the Cu(111) and Cu(211) surfaces using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and microkinetic simulations. A detailed kinetic perspective on the reaction mechanism, which is often overlooked in previous research that relies solely on DFT calculations, is provided in

Application of dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria for the remediation of soil and water polluted with chlorinated organic compounds: Progress, mechanisms, and directions.

Chlorinated organic compounds are widely used as solvents, but they are pollutants that can have adverse effects on the environment and human health. Dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) such as Shewanella and Geobacter have been applied to treat a wide range of halogenated organic compounds due to their specific biological properties. Until now, there has been no systematic review on the mechanisms of direct or indirect degradation of halogenated organic compounds by DIRB. This work summarizes the discussion of DIRB's ability to enhance the dechlorination of reaction systems through di

Sample preparation for suspect screening of persistent, mobile and toxic substances and their phase II metabolites in human urine by mixed-mode liquid chromatography.

Persistent, mobile and toxic substances have drawn attention nowadays due to their particular properties, but they are overlooked in human monitorization works, limiting the knowledge of the human exposome. In that sense, human urine is an interesting matrix since not only parent compounds are eliminated, but also their phase II metabolites that could act as biomarkers. In this work, 11 sample preparation procedures involving preconcentration were tested to ensure maximum analytical coverage in human urine using mixed-mode liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution tandem mass spectrom

Establishing Standardization Guidelines For Finite-Element Optomechanical Simulations of Refractive Laser Surgeries: An Application to Photorefractive Keratectomy.

PURPOSE: Computational models can help clinicians plan surgeries by accounting for factors such as mechanical imbalances or testing different surgical techniques beforehand. Different levels of modeling complexity are found in the literature, and it is still not clear what aspects should be included to obtain accurate results in finite-element (FE) corneal models. This work presents a methodology to narrow down minimal requirements of modeling features to report clinical data for a refractive intervention such as PRK. METHODS: A pipeline to create FE models of a refractive surgery is presente

The Effect of Prosodic Timing Structure on Unison Production in People With Aphasia.

PURPOSE: Unison production is a common aphasia treatment technique in which the clinician and the person with aphasia (PWA) produce phrases aloud together. It can be implemented using a typical "conversational," syntax-influenced prosodic timing structure, or with a "metrical," beat-based timing structure, but to date no study has directly compared these two approaches. This study compared the effects of metrical versus conversational prosodic timing during unison production on the (a) accuracy of participants' spoken output and (b) timing alignment of participants' productions with the stimul

Proteinase K Pretreatment for the Quantitative Recovery and Sensitive Detection of the Tuberculosis Biomarker Mannose-Capped Lipoarabinomannan Spiked into Human Serum.

This paper reports on an investigation of an enzymatic pretreatment protocol using proteinase K (ProK) for the analysis of human serum samples spiked with mannose-capped lipoarabinomannan (ManLAM). ManLAM is an antigenic biomarker found in the serum, urine, and other body fluids of individuals infected with tuberculosis (TB). Immunometric measurements of ManLAM are compromised by steric effects due to its complexation with high-molecular-weight components in these matrices that interfere with its capture and/or labeling. Recent work has shown that deproteinization of these types of samples by

Substance P concentrations in the blood plasma and serum of adult cattle and calves during different painful procedures and conditions - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Pain in cattle is a major welfare problem, as cattle mask their pain. Subjective and objective parameters to assess pain in cattle have been described. Among the objective parameters to evaluate pain in cattle is substance P (SP). SP is a neurotransmitter, which is involved in the processing of noxious information to the brain; it seems to be a more objective indicator for nociception than cortisol, which has long been used as a biomarker for pain and stress in cattle. The objective of this systematic review was to assess the existing literature about SP during painful procedures,

Quantification of Behind Shield Blunt Impacts Using a Modified Upper Extremity Anthropomorphic Test Device.

Ballistic shields are used by military and police members in dangerous situations to protect the user against threats such as gunfire. When struck, the shield material deforms to absorb the incoming kinetic energy of the projectile. If the rapid back-face deformation contacts the arm, it can potentially impart a large force, leading to injury risk, termed behind armor blunt trauma (BABT). This work characterized the loading profiles due to the contact between the deforming back-face of the shield and the arm using a modified upper extremity anthropomorphic test device (ATD). This ATD measured

Kv1.1 potassium channel subunit deficiency alters ventricular arrhythmia susceptibility, contractility, and repolarization.

Epilepsy-associated Kv1.1 voltage-gated potassium channel subunits encoded by the Kcna1 gene have traditionally been considered absent in heart, but recent studies reveal they are expressed in cardiomyocytes where they could regulate intrinsic cardiac electrophysiology. Although Kv1.1 now has a demonstrated functional role in atria, its role in the ventricles has never been investigated. In this work, electrophysiological, histological, and gene expression approaches were used to explore the consequences of Kv1.1 deficiency in the ventricles of Kcna1 knockout (KO) mice at the organ, cellular,

[THE INFLUENCE OF VARUS DEFORMITY ATMIDDLE THIRD OF FEMURON THE STRENGTH OF THE LOWER LIMB MUSCLES].

Treatment of post-traumatic deformities is a separate task of orthopedics and traumatology, because for the normalization of injured limb function requires more than realignment of bone fragments followed with their stable fixation. The analysis of post-traumatic deformities pays attention mostly to their influence on the joints. The functional state of the muscles of the damaged segment and limb, in general, is analyzed very seldom and not taken into consideration in the planning of treatment.Purpose - to study the effect of varus deformity of the femur at the level of the middle third on the

Salmonella enterica Serovars Dublin and Enteritidis Comparative Proteomics Reveals Differential Expression of Proteins Involved in Stress Resistance, Virulence, and Anaerobic Metabolism.

The Enteritidis and Dublin serovars of Salmonella enterica are phylogenetically closely related yet differ significantly in host range and virulence. S Enteritidis is a broad-host-range serovar that commonly causes self-limited gastroenteritis in humans, whereas S Dublin is a cattle-adapted serovar that can infect humans, often resulting in invasive extraintestinal disease. The mechanism underlying the higher invasiveness of S Dublin remains undetermined. In this work, we quantitatively compared the proteomes of clinical isolates of each serovar grown under gut-mimicking conditions. Compared t

The impact of extreme reuse and extended wear conditions on protection provided by a surgical-style N95 filtering facepiece respirator.

Most respirators employed in health care settings, and often in first responder and industrial settings, are intended for single-use: the user dons the respirator, performs a work activity, and then doffs and discards the respirator. However, in the current COVID-19 pandemic, in the presence of persistent shortages of personal protective equipment, extended use and reuse of filtering facepiece respirators are routinely contemplated by many health care organizations. Further, there is considerable current effort to understand the effect of sterilization on the possibility of reuse, and some inv

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, acupuncture, and spinal cord stimulation on neuropathic, inflammatory and, non-inflammatory pain in rat models.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), manual acupuncture (MA), and spinal cord stimulation (SCS) are used to treat a variety of pain conditions. These non-pharmacological treatments are often thought to work through similar mechanisms, and thus should have similar effects for different types of pain. However, it is unclear if each of these treatments work equally well on each type of pain condition. The purpose of this study was to compared the effects of TENS, MA, and SCS on neuropathic, inflammatory, and non-inflammatory pain models. METHODS: TENS 60 Hz, 200 μs, 90

Modelling sea lice control by lumpfish on Atlantic salmon farms: interactions with mate limitation, temperature and treatment rules.

Atlantic salmon farming is one of the largest aquaculture sectors in the world. A major impact on farm economics, fish welfare and, potentially, nearby wild salmonid populations, is the sea louse ectoparasite Lepeophtheirus salmonis. Sea louse infestations are most often controlled through application of chemicals, but in most farming regions, sea lice have evolved resistance to the small set of available chemicals. Therefore, alternative treatment methodologies are becoming more widely used. One increasingly common alternative treatment involves the co-culture of farmed salmon with cleaner fi
