A 28-year-old woman developed osteoporosis following seven years of neuroleptic use. She presented with amenorrhea and profuse galactorrhea of four years' duration. Dual photon absorptionometry demonstrated reduced bone mineral density in the femur and spine. Serum calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase were normal. The patient was started on bromocriptine, and her bone density, serum prolactin, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, and free and total testosterone improved. No deterioration in her psychiatric condition occurred.

WHO's FRAX aims to identify bone-fracture high-risk individuals requiring medical intervention by calculating each individual's 10-year probability (%) of bone fracture based on clinical risk factors or clinical risk factors plus bone mineral density (BMD). The risk factors are age, sex, femoral neck mineral density, or body mass index (BMI) if BMD data are unavailable, history of bone fracture, parental history of femoral neck fracture, smoking, consumption of alcohol, use of steroids, rheumatoid arthritis, and secondary osteoporosis. Model with clinical risk factors alone can predict osteopo

Half of all patients with inflammatory bowel disease show a significant reduction of their bone mass during the course of their chronic inflammatory disease. In contrast to women with postmenopausal osteoporosis these patients are much younger and a significant subgroup develops vertebral fractures which are mostly asymptomatic. The activity of the chronic inflammatory disease and the steroid treatment leads to bone loss predominantly through the TNFα-driven osteoprotegerin system. Clinical useful genetic markers to identify patients at risk for fractures have not been developed so far. Long-t

Five cases of pathologically proved psammomatoid ossifying fibromas of the sinonasal area are presented. All five cases were examined by CT and in three cases MR imaging was performed before and after injection of gadopentetate dimeglumine. The lesions were located in the sphenoethmoidal area and extended over the nasal cavity or orbit in four cases. In one case, the lesion occurred at the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone with preservation of the ethmoidal sinus. On CT, all the lesions were expansile and circumscribed by a thick bony wall. Internal septations of bone density (four cases

Functionally graded porous (FGP) interbody cage might offer a trade-off between porosity-based reduction of stiffness and mechanical properties. Using finite element models of intact and implanted lumbar functional spinal unit (FSU), the study investigated the quantitative deviations in load transfer and adaptive changes in bone density distributions around FGP interbody cages. The cage had three graded porosities: FGP-A, -B, and -C corresponded to a maximum porosity levels of 48%, 65% and 78%, respectively. Efficacy of the FGP cages were evaluated by comparing the numerically predicted result

BACKGROUND: Studies using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) demonstrate a reduction in bone mineral density (BMD) in children and adolescents with Turner syndrome (TS). However, these studies do not take into account changes in bone size, which influence BMD in the case of short-statured patients. Phalangeal quantitative ultrasound (phQUS) measurements have shown an ability to reveal changes due to skeletal growth, aging, and bone and mineral disorders. There is limited data on bone mineral status in girls with TS assessed by 2 different techniques, i.e., DXA and phQUS.

BACKGROUND: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare genetic disorder resulting in variable alterations of bone formation and mineralization that are caused by mutations in the ALPL gene, encoding the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzyme.
METHODS: In this phase IIA open-label, single-center, intra-patient, dose-escalating study, adult patients with HPP received 3 ascending intravenous doses of 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg BPS804, a fully human anti-sclerostin monoclonal antibody, on days 1, 15, and 29, respectively. Patients were followed for 16 weeks after the last dose. We assessed the pharm

Zoledronic acid (ZOL) has shown beneficial effects on bone turnover and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal osteoporosis. This study compared the efficacy and safety of a once-yearly i.v. infusion of ZOL with weekly oral alendronate (ALN) in men with osteoporosis. In this multicenter, double-blind, active-controlled, parallel-group study, participants (n = 302) were randomized to receive either once-yearly ZOL 5 mg i.v. or weekly oral ALN 70 mg for 24 months. Changes in BMD and bone marker levels were assessed. ZOL increased BMD at the lumbar spine, total hip, femoral neck, and trocha

INTRODUCTION: Thalassaemic osteopathy is a multifactorial disorder and limited information exists about bone accrual and bone mineral density (BMD) in prepubertal thalassaemic children. The study aimed to investigate some potential genetic and biochemical bone markers as possible early predictors of BMD variations in children with β-thalassaemia major (TM) before puberty.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirt-one prepubertal children with β-TM, and 43 matched controls were subjected to BMD assessment by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms (Bsm1, Fok1) an

OBJECTIVES: Mechanical and biochemical bone properties are influenced by muscles. However, the muscle-bone interaction has not been fully elucidated regarding the upper extremities. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the mechanical muscle-bone interaction at the forearm by evaluating the relationship between the properties of three-dimensional (3D) forearm cortical bone models derived from conventional computed tomography (CT) images and handgrip strength (HGS).

Although the effects of osteoporosis on the skeleton are well studied, site-specific and long-term studies on the mandible are still lacking. This study investigated the time-course changes of the bone microarchitecture in the mandibular condyle in comparison to the corresponding changes in the alveolar bone, body of the mandible, and femur. Thirty-six 11-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into ovariectomized (OVX) (24 rats) and sham (12 rats) groups. The right femur and mandible were obtained from 6 OVX rats and 3 sham rats at 8, 12, 26, and 36 weeks after surgery, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Dinosaurs are unique among terrestrial tetrapods in their body sizes, which range from less than 3 gm in hummingbirds to 70,000 kg or more in sauropods. Studies of the microstructure of bone tissue have indicated that large dinosaurs, once believed to be slow growing, attained maturity at rates comparable to or greater than those of large mammals. A number of structural criteria in bone tissue have been used to assess differences in rates of osteogenesis in extinct taxa, including counts of lines of arrested growth and the density of vascular canals.

Adynamic bone disease in HD patients is characterized by skeletal resistance to parathyroid hormone (PTH) or suppression of PTH release, leading to a downregulated bone turnover and bone fracture. Hence, we examined the efficacy of weekly teriparatide for HD patients with low PTH indicating adynamic bone disease without a history of parathyroidectomy. Fifteen HD patients with low PTH were recruited in this prospective observational study. Of them, 10 received teriparatide for 12 months and five nontreated patients were enrolled as control. Primary outcomes were defined as the changes in bone m

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women, and its treatment often involves chemotherapy and hormone therapy, which can compromise bone mineral density (BMD). Tamoxifen, a selective estrogen receptor modulator, has different effects depending on the patient's hormonal status. On the one hand, in postmenopausal women, it has a protective effect on BMD; on the other hand, in premenopausal women, it can accelerate bone loss, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. The reduction in estrogen levels during treatment is a key factor in this bone loss. This review underscores

Background/Objectives: Physical activity is widely recognized for its beneficial effects on bone density during adolescence, which could lead to enhanced bone density in later life, thus acting as a health-promoting activity with long-lasting implications. However, not all studies are conclusive regarding the type, intensity, duration, and frequency of the most effective physical activities. This study focuses on combat sports athletes and examines the relationship between their somatic build and heel bone parameters using ultrasound (USG) and their vitamin D3 levels. Methods: The study includ

Osteoporosis, a disease defined by the primary bone strength due to a low bone mineral density, is a bone disorder associated with increased mortality in the older adult population. Osteoporosis is mainly treated via hormone replacement therapy, bisphosphates, and anti-bone resorption agents. However, these agents exert severe side effects, necessitating the development of novel therapeutic agents. Many studies are focusing on osteogenic agents as they increase the bone density, which is essential for osteoporosis treatment. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of Diospyros lotus L. leaf

The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the accuracy of digital subtraction radiography (DSR) to detect small changes in calcium mass in alveolar bone adjacent to tooth roots. In each of 4 dried porcine mandible segments, one interproximal and one buccal "defect" region was defined adjacent to a premolar root. A series of cortical and cancellous bone slices with a 50 microns--stepwise increasing thickness (0-5000 microns) were attached to the mandible segments covering the respective "defect" region. Standardized radiographs were quantitatively assessed for density changes using DSR. A
