Developmental functioning and medical Co-morbidity profile of children with complex and essential autism.

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) may be characterized as "complex" (those with microcephaly and/or dysmorphology) or "essential" (those with neither of these two). Previous studies found subjects in the complex group exhibited lower IQ scores, poorer response to behavioral intervention, more seizures and more abnormal EEGs and brain MRIs compared to the essential group. The objective of this study was to determine if there are differences in complex versus essential subjects based on several developmental/psychological measures as well as certain medical comorbidities. This study

Quantitative Measurement of Communication Ability in Children with Angelman Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Angelman syndrome is a rare disorder in which most individuals do not develop speech. Testing of communication ability using traditional neuropsychological measures reveals a performance level at or near the floor of the instrument resulting in an inability to detect change when experimental therapeutics are applied. METHODS: Nine individuals, with molecularly confirmed AS, ranging in age from 34 to 126 months, and a single healthy control child (age 16 months) were audio and video-recorded while interacting with a licensed speech-language pathologist in an attempt to elicit vocal

Evidence Base Update for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This evidence base update examines the level of empirical support for interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) younger than 5 years old. It focuses on research published since a previous review in this journal (Rogers & Vismara, 2008 ). We identified psychological or behavioral interventions that had been manualized and evaluated in either (a) experimental or quasi-experimental group studies or (b) systematic reviews of single-subject studies. We extracted data from all studies that met these criteria and were published after the previous review. Interventions were catego

General developmental health in the VPA-rat model of autism.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition diagnosed by impaired social interaction, abnormal communication and, stereotyped behaviors. While post-mortem and imaging studies have provided good insights into the neurobiological symptomology of autism, animal models can be used to study the neuroanatomical, neurophysiological and molecular mediators in more detail and in a more controlled environment. The valproic acid (VPA) rat model is an environmentally triggered model with strong construct and clinical validity. It is based on VPA teratogenicity in humans, where mothers who are medicated with

Protective effects of the alcohol dehydrogenase-ADH1B*3 allele on attention and behavior problems in adolescents exposed to alcohol during pregnancy.

Alcohol dehydrogenase is a critical enzyme in the metabolism of alcohol. Expression of three alleles at the ADH1B locus results in enzymes that differ in turnover rate and affinity for alcohol. The ADH1B*3 allele, which appears to be unique to individuals of African descent, is associated with more rapid alcohol metabolism than the more prevalent ADH1B*1 allele. It has been previously demonstrated that the presence of at least one maternal ADH1B*3 allele confers a protective effect against alcohol teratogenicity in infants and children. This study was conducted to determine whether the presenc

"They silently live in terror…" why sleep problems and night-time related quality-of-life are missed in children with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Children and adolescents with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) are at high-risk for developing sleep problems (SPs) triggering daytime behavioral co-morbidities such as inattention, hyperactivity, and cognitive and emotional impairments. However, symptoms of sleep deprivation are solely associated with typical daytime diagnosis, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and treated with psychotropic medications. To understand how and why SPs are missed, we conducted qualitative interviews (QIs) with six parents and seven health care professionals (HCPs), and performed com

Parents' attitudes related to melanocytic nevus count in children.

Sun exposure, fair phototype, and a high common melanocytic nevus (MN) count have been identified as the most important risk factors for melanoma. MN are mainly acquired during childhood, and their relationship to sun exposure, sunburn, and light skin complexion is well documented. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the sun protection attitudes of parents and their offspring affect MN development in children. We designed a cross-sectional study in 828 9-year-old school children. Trained nurses counted the MN on each child's back and arms, depending on their size. Questionnaires f

Fetal alcohol and drug effects.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and drug use by pregnant women are harmful to the developing embryo and fetus. Teasing apart the specific contributions of each substance to adverse child outcome, however, proves difficult in practice. The risks to the neonate include intra-uterine growth retardation, birth defects, altered neurobehavior, and withdrawal symptoms. Subsequent behavior, development, and neurologic function may also be impaired. REVIEW SUMMARY: Maternal cigarette smoking carries the greatest risk of impaired fetal growth of any of the substances discussed herein and has been linked to subsequ

Associational pathway analyses of depression and impulsivity in the relationship between internet addiction and non-suicidal self-injury among adolescents: a cross-sectional case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents undergo important developmental changes, characterized by profound biological and psychosocial changes. This period is also associated with increased vulnerability to mental health challenges and engagement in risky/problematic behaviors. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and internet addiction (IA) are increasingly recognized as prevalent and interconnected behavioral concerns among adolescents, particularly those with depressive disorders. Impulsivity has also been identified as a key psychological factor in both IA and NSSI. This study aimed to investigate the cross-se

Efficacy of smartphone-based behavioral activation, assertiveness training, and problem-solving therapy for parenting stress in parents raising autistic children: a multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel-group trial.

BACKGROUND: Parents of autistic children often experience high levels of stress and depressive symptoms. Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective in alleviating depression and reducing stress, its delivery requires trained personnel and considerable time, limiting accessibility. Smartphone applications may provide a feasible alternative. This study evaluated the efficacy of smartphone-delivered behavioral activation, assertiveness training, and problem-solving therapy in improving depressive symptoms and reducing stress among parents of autistic children. Phenotypic Description of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Psychopathology in Maternal 15q Duplication Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal 15q11-q13 duplication syndrome (Dup15q) has been associated with 0.5% of all cases of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There is no established protocol for the neuropsychiatric evaluation of individuals with this syndrome. This study aims to define a protocol incorporating gold standard assessments. METHODS: Six individuals with Dup15q underwent assessment of cognitive and adaptive functioning (Leiter-3, Adaptive Behavior Assessment System-Second Edition), autistic traits (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 [ADOS-2], Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised [ADI-R], Social

Emotional-Behavioral Dysregulation and Cortical Alterations in Pediatric Diffuse Midline Glioma With H3K27M Mutant: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Emotional-behavioral dysregulation (EBD) significantly affects the quality of life of glioma patients, but few studies report their psychopathological state and related cortical changes in children with diffuse midline gliomas (DMGs) with H3K27M mutant, hindering the implementation of interventions. We aim to explore the relationships among H3K27M mutation, EBD, and cortical remodeling. METHODS: In total, 133 children were enrolled in Beijing during 2019-2024, including 66 children with DMGs with H3K27M mutant (DMGs-HM), 17 DMGs with H3K27M wild type (DMGs-HW), alon

Factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months among caregivers of children under five years in northern Ghana: A cross-sectional study.

Despite consistent evidence highlighting the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for the first six months, EBF duration sometimes falls short of six months or exceeds it. This research seeks to explore factors influencing the practice of optimal duration of EBF and identify factors associated with suboptimal EBF durations. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 16 districts across four Northern regions of Ghana with 2000 caregivers of children under five years old. The analysis specifically focused on a subset of 1761 biological mothers. Logistic regression was conducted to discern so

Sleep disturbances and behavioral symptoms in pediatric Sotos syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sotos syndrome (SoS) is a rare overgrowth genetic disease caused by intragenic mutations or microdeletions of the NSD1 gene located on chromosome 5q35. SoS population might present cognitive impairment and a spectrum of behavioral characteristics, with a worse profile in patients with microdeletion. Although patients with SoS are known to have impaired sleep habits, very little data are available. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of sleep disorders (SDs) in a pediatric cohort of patients with SoS and their correlation with neuropsychiatric profiles. METHODS: We inc
