Automated Assessment of Balance Rehabilitation Exercises With a Data-Driven Scoring Model: Algorithm Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Balance rehabilitation programs represent the most common treatments for balance disorders. Nonetheless, lack of resources and lack of highly expert physiotherapists are barriers for patients to undergo individualized rehabilitation sessions. Therefore, balance rehabilitation programs are often transferred to the home environment, with a considerable risk of the patient misperforming the exercises or failing to follow the program at all. Holobalance is a persuasive coaching system with the capacity to offer full-scale rehabilitation services at home. Holobalance involves several mo

Machine learning to predict occult neck node metastasis in early oral squamous cell carcinoma - a comparison of models to risk stratify patients undergoing a sentinel lymph node biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) provides pathological staging of the neck in T1/T2 node-negative oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Up to 85% of SNB positive patients will have a negative completion neck dissection (CND), thus receiving unnecessary surgery. We sought to investigate the utility of machine learning to predict occult metastasis in sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) and non-SLNs. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study designed to collect clinical, pathological, and hematological markers was available from 177 cT1/2 cN0 OSCC patients who underwent SNB. Accuracy of logistic-regres

Abnormal regional cerebral blood flow in systemic lupus erythematosus patients with psychiatric symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies have demonstrated decreased regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. However, no study has done voxel-based analysis using statistical parametric mapping (SPM) that can evaluate rCBF objectively, and the relationship between rCBF and psychiatric symptoms has not been well investigated. Using L,L-ethyl cysteinate dimer (99mTc ECD) SPECT and SPM, we aimed to clarify the association of rCBF changes with psychiatric symptoms in SLE patients whose magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed

Pain Recognition With Electrocardiographic Features in Postoperative Patients: Method Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: There is a strong demand for an accurate and objective means of assessing acute pain among hospitalized patients to help clinicians provide pain medications at a proper dosage and in a timely manner. Heart rate variability (HRV) comprises changes in the time intervals between consecutive heartbeats, which can be measured through acquisition and interpretation of electrocardiography (ECG) captured from bedside monitors or wearable devices. As increased sympathetic activity affects the HRV, an index of autonomic regulation of heart rate, ultra-short-term HRV analysis can provide a re

Importance of immunometabolic markers for the classification of patients with major depressive disorder using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Although there is scientific evidence of the presence of immunometabolic alterations in major depression, not all patients present them. Recent studies point to the association between an inflammatory phenotype and certain clinical symptoms in patients with depression. The objective of our study was to classify major depression disorder patients using supervised learning algorithms or machine learning, based on immunometabolic and oxidative stress biomarkers and lifestyle habits. METHODS: Taking into account a series of inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers (C-reactive prot

A natural language processing and deep learning approach to identify child abuse from pediatric electronic medical records.

Child physical abuse is a leading cause of traumatic injury and death in children. In 2017, child abuse was responsible for 1688 fatalities in the United States, of 3.5 million children referred to Child Protection Services and 674,000 substantiated victims. While large referral hospitals maintain teams trained in Child Abuse Pediatrics, smaller community hospitals often do not have such dedicated resources to evaluate patients for potential abuse. Moreover, identification of abuse has a low margin of error, as false positive identifications lead to unwarranted separations, while false negativ

Prediction models for evaluation of total-body bone mass with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry among children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The performance of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in identifying children with decreased bone mass is increasing, but there is no consensus regarding how to interpret the results. The World Health Organization diagnostic categories for normal, osteopenia, and osteoporosis, based on T scores, are not applicable to children and adolescents who have not yet reached peak bone mass. The pediatric reference standards provided by DXA manufacturers have been questioned. Bone mineral density determined with DXA is "areal" density (a 2-dimensional measurement of a 3-dimensional struct

Clinical metrics and tools for provider assessment and tracking of trigonocephaly.

OBJECTIVE: Quantitative measurements of trigonocephaly can be used to characterize and track this phenotype, which is associated with metopic craniosynostosis. Traditionally, trigonocephaly metrics were extracted from CT scans; however, this method exposes patients to ionizing radiation. Three-dimensional optical scans are another option but are not routinely available in most outpatient settings. Recently, the authors developed semiautomated artificial intelligence algorithms that extract craniometric data from orthogonal 2D photographs. Although 2D photographs are safe, inexpensive, and stra

An improved YOLOv5 method for accurate recognition of grazing sheep activities: active, inactive, ruminating behaviors.

Having comprehensive access to information on sheep behaviors is essential for acquiring relevant insights into the health status of sheep and preventing diseases promptly. In particular, the ruminating behavior of sheep tends to reflect the health of their digestive system. However, due to the challenging nature of detecting ruminating behavior, traditional research has not yielded satisfactory results. In fact, many computer vision-based methods do not consider ruminating behavior as a distinctive feature for recognizing sheep behavior. To this end, we proposed an efficient model for recogni
