Harnessing the untapped genetic diversity of local landraces: omics technologies as a gateway to horticultural breeding.

Horticultural crops, particularly Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae, represent a major component of global vegetable production and are increasingly exposed to climate variability and environmental constraints. Landraces and crop wild relatives constitute essential reservoirs of adaptive genetic diversity; however, their effective utilization in breeding programs remains limited by fragmented characterization, incomplete passport information, and reliance on labor-intensive morphological descriptors. These limitations hinder the systematic exploitation of conserved germplasm and restrict its integr

Responses of Soil Carbon Release to Freeze-Thaw Cycles Mediated by Carbon Availability at Regional and Global Scales.

Soil freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) are widespread across mid- to high-latitude and high-altitude regions, with particularly high frequency in permafrost areas where they can enhance soil carbon release and potentially accelerate climate warming. However, the response of soil carbon release to FTCs and its determinants at the regional scale remain unclear due to the lack of direct experimental evidence. Here, based on topsoil samples along a 1000-km transect across the Tibetan permafrost region, we conducted a freeze-thaw microcosm experiment (5 cycles of 1-day freezing and 3-day thawing) to invest

Elevated CO₂ promotes the translocation and degradation of strobilurin fungicides in cucumber via coupled physiological and metabolic pathways.

Elevated atmospheric CO₂ is a prominent consequence of global climate change, which substantially alters plant physiological processes and further modulates the environmental fate of pesticides in agricultural ecosystems, thereby threatening agricultural product safety and ecological health. Nevertheless, the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying elevated CO₂-regulated uptake, translocation, and metabolism of fungicides in crop plants remain largely unclear. In the present study, cucumber seedlings were selected as the model plant, and integrated physiological detection, subcellu

Combined impacts of warming and methomyl on neurophysiological and behavioral responses in Amazonian frog tadpoles.

Amphibian populations are declining globally due to anthropogenic stressors such as climate change and environmental contamination. In Amazonia, where aquatic species already endure conditions near their thermal thresholds, the combined effects of rising temperatures and pesticide exposure pose a threat to their survival and physiological stability. Here, we evaluated the isolated and interactive impacts of elevated temperature and sublethal concentrations of the carbamate pesticide methomyl on behavior, neurophysiology, and endocrine responses in tadpoles of two Amazonian frogs, Osteocephalus

Health co-benefits of sustainable dietary transitions to reduced red and processed meat intake in the United Kingdom: a modelling study.

PURPOSE: Reducing meat intake and increasing plant-based food consumption are priorities for chronic disease prevention and environmental sustainability across Europe. Previous modelling has outlined how policy interventions could shift dietary patterns to align with meat reduction targets, but the resulting health impacts remain unexplored. METHODS: We quantified the projected health impacts of the UK Climate Change Committee's (CCC) dietary targets-a 35% or 50% reduction in meat consumption-focusing on red and processed meat and substitution with vegetables and legumes, on incidence and mor

Effectiveness of constructed wetland as a green approach for aquaculture wastewater treatment: A case study.

This study offers a detailed case-based evaluation of a laboratory-scale vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) system treating aquaculture wastewater characterized by a controlled effluent matrix and carefully managed hydraulic retention times (HRTs). Unlike more generalized constructed wetlands (CWs) applications, our research integrates specific operational parameters including vertical flow design, a 360 L treatment capacity, and a hydraulic loading rate of 8.2 L/d/m2 to systematically assess the removal of critical pollutants such as nitrate (NO3-), phosphate (PO4-3), hydrogen sulfide (

Air nanobubbles reduce methane and ammonia but increase nitrous oxide emissions from dairy lagoon wastewater.

This study evaluated the effects of air nanobubbles and conventional aeration on emissions of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and ammonia (NH3) from dairy lagoon wastewater. Wastewater collected from a commercial dairy in California was treated in duplicate drum systems under nanobubbles aeration, conventional aeration, and control (no aeration) over 31 days. Nanobubbles aeration significantly reduced CH4 emissions rates by 66.7% compared with the control. However, the reduction was not statistically significant relative to conventional aeration, although the average

Lifetime urban exposure, socioeconomic position and respiratory health among adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Early-life exposure to urban environmental factors, including air pollution, greenness or climate-related factors, is suspected to be associated with respiratory health but evidence among adolescents is scarce. We estimated the association between early-life exposure to urban factors and respiratory health among adolescents and addressed whether the socioeconomic position (SEP) could modify these associations. METHODS: This study was based on 3731 mother-child pairs from the HELIX and Generation R cohorts with 29 exposures from 6 domains (air pollution, built environment, natura

Differential Demographic Trajectories and Polygenic Adaptation to Monsoon Seasonality in Sky Island Hercules Beetle Populations of the American Southwest.

Sky island mountain ranges of the American Southwest represent isolated habitat fragments surrounded by arid lowland barriers, making them powerful natural experiments for studying population divergence, demographic history and local adaptation. Here, we use whole-genome resequencing of the Western Hercules beetle (Dynastes grantii Horn, 1870) across four primary lineages to characterize the genomic consequences of habitat fragmentation and climate-driven isolation. Population structure analyses revealed strong hierarchical genetic differentiation consistent with isolation-by-distance, while A

Multistress in a changing world: Impacts of pollutant mixture and temperature on stress response, endocrine system, and detoxification mechanisms in the freshwater gastropod Physa acuta (Draparnaud, 1805).

Aquatic ecosystems are vulnerable to climate change and pollution, with individual pollutants and combinations of anthropogenic compounds having a significant impact on them. Mixtures lead to complex interactions with additional stress from climate change, exacerbating temperature increases. Traditional toxicity approaches may not effectively capture the impacts and interactions of these factors, which can put the aquatic invertebrate populations at risk. Therefore, to closely mimic environmental conditions, adults of the freshwater gastropod Physa acuta were exposed to mixtures of three well-

Abscisic acid interplay with phytohormones, plant growth regulators and signaling molecules in orchestrating an elaborate crosstalk for stress resilience in plants.

The increasing challenges, posed by plant biotic and abiotic stress, significantly impact agroecosystems, particularly in the context of rapid global climate change. Phytohormones function as critical chemical messengers, enabling plants to endure these stresses through a complex regulatory framework, thereby playing an essential role in plant survival. Recent research has increasingly underscored the significance of abscisic acid (ABA), in facilitating a prominent role under adverse conditions within plants. ABA has been shown to engage with major phytohormones, such as gibberellins (GAs), et

Widespread coral bleaching across subtropical and temperate Japan under record marine heat stress.

Marine heatwaves in 2024 drove record-breaking sea surface temperatures (SSTs) across the Japanese coast, generating the highest Degree Heating Weeks (DHW), which quantifies the accumulation of thermal stress, observed in the past four decades. Here, we quantify thermal stress and coral bleaching responses across a latitudinal gradient spanning subtropical reef systems and non-reef temperate regions (24°-35°N). DHW exceeded 8 °C-weeks at all sites and reached extreme levels of 17-19 °C-weeks at high latitudes. This unprecedented heat stress triggered widespread mass coral bleaching across both

Analysis of intra-annual mortality fluctuations by cause of death in Italy, 2004-19.

Seasonal fluctuations in mortality significantly affect population health and remain an important public health challenge, particularly in the context of climate change and population ageing. Evidence on how different causes of death shape seasonal mortality patterns remains limited. We apply a novel framework to quantify, in a systematic, transparent, and comparable manner, the absolute and relative contributions of 17 cause-of-death groups to seasonal mortality in Italy. We analyzed monthly mortality data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics, disaggregated by cause of death, sex

Detection of suitable habitat areas in Japan of the Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis vectors Ixodes ovatus and Ixodes persulcatus based on abiotic factors.

In Japan, Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are primarily in the northernmost prefecture Hokkaido, where their primary vectors Ixodes ovatus and Ixodes persulcatus are most abundant. Recently, tick surveillance activities have collected both species across Japan, indicating potential expansion of their tick-borne pathogens (TBPs). We built a machine-learning (ML) model using available tick surveillance and environmental data to predict suitable habitat areas for I. ovatus and I. persulcatus and identify potential higher-risk areas of Lyme disease and TBE across Japan. Data on the

Reconstruction and Comparative Analysis of a Large Late Pleistocene Modern Human Femur From Wajak, Indonesia.

OBJECTIVES: A largely undescribed Late Pleistocene Homo sapiens femur from Wajak, Java, Indonesia (minimum age, 36.5 ka) is reconstructed. In conjunction with data derived from other fossil specimens, we test whether ecogeographic rules relating body size and shape to climate apply to late Middle to Late Pleistocene East Asian Homo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preserved portions of the Wajak femur were micro-CT scanned and used to reconstruct the whole bone using a sample of modern human femora as a template. Body mass and stature were reconstructed from femoral head breadth and length. Similar da
