Using Student-Reported Digital Daily Logs and Human-Verified AI-Assisted Reflection Coding to Describe Clinical Experiences in Community-Based Clerkships: Exploratory Observational Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: In Japan, the 2021 revision to the Medical Practitioners Act formally supported students' participation in supervised clinical practice. However, monitoring day-to-day clinical experiences across community-based clerkship sites remains challenging. Student-reported digital daily logs and reflection sheets provide complementary descriptive information across such sites. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether a digital educational data workflow, combining student-reported daily clinical activity logs with human-verified artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted reflection co

Sclerotherapy for slow-flow vascular malformations: An international survey of practice patterns and periprocedural management.

BACKGROUND: Slow-flow vascular malformations (SFVMs) are rare congenital anomalies that cause significant morbidity. Currently, no evidence-based therapy exists to improve SFVM symptoms and reduce its relapse in the long-term. Sclerotherapy is central to management and widely practiced, yet comprehensive international data are limited and no standardized guidelines exist. We aimed to evaluate current practice patterns, focusing on sclerotherapy and multidisciplinary care. METHODS: An international cross-sectional survey was distributed to experts in the International Society for the Study of

Biocontrol of tobacco leaf mold using Bacillus velezensis: effects on volatile profiles and microbial community.

Mold contamination causes economic losses and poses risks to human and animal health. Tobacco leaves, as a high-value agricultural product, are particularly susceptible to mold contamination during post-harvest handling. In this study, the antifungal performance of Bacillus velezensis ZD-F13 was evaluated on tobacco leaves. In laboratory-scale assays, ZD-F13 treatment reduced the fungal colony count by 84% relative to the Penicillium group. Electronic-nose and gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry analyses showed that the volatile profile of the Penicillium + ZD-F13 group was closer to

Near-optimal P300 speller performance using large language models: A multi-model analysis with performance bounds.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease, severely impairs communication, requiring assistive technologies that restore interaction. The P300 speller brain-computer interface (BCI) enables communication by translating EEG responses into text; however, its practical adoption is limited by slow typing speed and the need for subject-specific calibration. Recent work has demonstrated that large language models (LLMs), such as GPT-2, can significantly improve the performance of the P300 speller by predicting words. However, it remains unclear whether these gains

Long-term farmyard organic residue amendments shape the resistance and resilience of soil microbial communities to simulated drying and heating-drying disturbances under a changing climate in the Senegalese groundnut basin.

INTRODUCTION: Soil hosts a rich diversity of microorganisms essential to ecosystem functioning, but the droughts and high temperatures projected under future climate scenarios, particularly in Senegal, may significantly disrupt these processes. This study aimed to assess the effects of projected drying and combined heating-drying stress on the resistance and resilience of soil microbial communities, and to evaluate how these properties are shaped by contrasting farming practices, home-fields, which receive regular organic inputs, versus out-fields, which receive low or no organic inputs. Interaction as care in advanced dementia: protocol for a qualitative video-based study of routine care practices.

INTRODUCTION: Interaction plays a central role in the delivery of care and in supporting participation and well-being in healthcare. For people living with advanced dementia, cognitive and communicative impairments can restrict participation in everyday care activities while increasing reliance on interaction to obtain support. Although participation is widely promoted in dementia care, empirical evidence on how it is enacted in routine care interactions, particularly in advanced stages of dementia, remains limited. This study aims to examine how healthcare professionals create opportunities f

PEEC: The Protected Entities Ethics Checklist for Collecting Speech Data From Vulnerable Clinical Populations.

PURPOSE: The rapid advancement of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and natural language processing technologies has created significant opportunities for clinical applications within speech and language disorders, yet these capabilities remain largely confined to high-resource languages and populations. As research communities work to address these inequities through inclusive speech data collection, the intersection of clinical vulnerability, linguistic diversity, and emerging speech and language technologies creates ethical considerations that are rarely addressed by existing guidelines. Implementing a successful patient navigation program for follow-up colonoscopy: Lessons from the PRECISE study.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening using annual fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) is an effective strategy to reduce CRC incidence and mortality. However, nearly 50% of patients with abnormal FIT results fail to complete the necessary follow-up colonoscopy. Patient navigation (PN) can provide crucial support for colonoscopy completion. Despite PN's effectiveness, there is limited knowledge about its optimal implementation in community health settings. This manuscript presents lessons learned from a PN intervention, including successes, challenges, and recommendations, which are essen

Adolescent condom negotiation: a concept analysis and conceptual framework.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents are at risk of sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies. Consistent condom use is effective in curbing the double burden of diseases and unplanned conceptions. Condom negotiation influences consistent condom use. However, a clear operational definition is lacking. This paper analyzes the concept of adolescent condom negotiation and examines its defining attributes, antecedents, and consequences to promote conceptual clarity and enhance sexual health research and practice. METHODS: Norris's (1982) concept clarification method guided this analysis. Th

Social Media Constructions of Alcohol as Emotional Coping and Social Connection in Ghana: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is a leading contributor to disease and injury worldwide; yet, it remains embedded in cultural practices associated with pleasure, social connection, and emotional relief. While global research has documented both the epidemiological burden and the social meanings of drinking, little is known about how alcohol-related meanings are circulated and normalized within African social media environments. OBJECTIVE: This study explores how alcohol is represented in Ghanaian social media discourse, with particular attention to emotional coping, social interaction, and everyday well

Humanization of nursing care in hospitalized patients with non-communicable diseases: a phenomenological qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The inpatient care of patients with non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) often involves extended stays, where the human quality of nursing care is as relevant as the technical interventions. However, dehumanization in daily practice, manifested in impersonal routines, deficient communication, and inattention to the patient’s values, erodes trust and wellbeing. Guided by Jean Watson’s theory of human caring, this study explored the lived experiences of hospitalized patients in relation to nursing care in Mexican public hospitals. METHODS: A qualitative study using a hermeneutic-

Accessing HIV services in Botswana: perspectives of men who have sex with men and other stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) represent an increasing number of new HIV infections in Botswana. Many in Botswana still hold discriminatory views against people who engage in same-sex practices. While it is well documented that stigma and discrimination undermine efforts to prevent HIV, the literature about the perception and experiences of discrimination against MSM in accessing HIV services in Botswana is scant. OBJECTIVE(S): In this study, we sought to explore the perception and experiences of discrimination against MSM to improve access to HIV services and reduce discriminati

A hybrid, effectiveness-implementation research study protocol targeting antenatal care providers to provide female genital mutilation prevention and care services in Guinea, Kenya and Somalia.

BACKGROUND: In settings with high prevalence of female genital mutilation (FGM), the health sector could play a bigger role in its prevention and care of women and girls who have undergone this harmful practice. However, ministries of health lack clear policies, strategic plans or dedicated funding to implement anti-FGM interventions. Along with limited relevant knowledge and skills to prevent the practice of FGM and care for girls and women living with FGM, health providers have limited interpersonal communication skills and self-efficacy, while some may have supportive attitudes towards FGM

The role of trust and health literacy in nurse-delivered point-of-care STI testing for pregnant women living with HIV, Tshwane District, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) during pregnancy result in neonatal morbidity and mortality, and may increase mother-to-child-transmission of HIV. Yet the World Health Organization's current syndromic management guidelines for STIs leaves most pregnant women undiagnosed and untreated. Point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tests for STIs can drastically improve detection and treatment. Though acceptable and feasible, poor medication adherence and re-infection due to lack of partner treatment threaten the programmatic effectiveness of POC diagnostic programmes. METHODS: To engender
