Review of the safety, efficacy and patient acceptability of the combined dienogest/estradiol valerate contraceptive pill.

The aim of this review is to define the role of the combined dienogest (DNG)/estradiol valerate (E2V) contraceptive pill, in terms of biochemistry, metabolic and pharmacological effects and clinical application as well. E2V is the esterified form of 17β-estradiol (E2), while dienogest is a fourth-generation progestin with a partial antiandrogenic effect. The cycle stability is achieved with 2 to 3 mg DNG, supporting contraceptive efficacy. In this new oral contraceptive, E2V is combined with DNG in a four-phasic dose regimen (the first two tablets contain 3 mg E2V; the next five tablets includ

Intracardiac entrapped and pulmonary embolism developing during oral contraceptive therapy in a young woman.

We report a case of biatrial thrombus entrapped in a patent foramen ovale (PFO) in a 39-year-old woman under oral contraceptive therapy who was admitted to our hospital with multiple pulmonary embolism without paradoxical embolism. We present this case because of the relatively unusual thromboembolic disease.

Treatment of unscheduled bleeding in continuous oral contraceptive users with doxycycline: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate whether doxycycline, a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor, would decrease unscheduled bleeding associated with initiation of a continuous oral contraceptive pill. METHODS: Participants initiating a continuous oral contraceptive pill (20 micrograms of ethinyl estradiol/90 micrograms of levonorgestrel) were randomly assigned to receive either doxycycline (100 mg orally twice daily) or placebo taken for 5 days at the onset of each bleeding or spotting episode during the first 84 days of the study period. For the final 28 days of the study, participants were observed on the

[Effect of combined hormonal contraceptives on the vascular endothelium und new cardiovascular risk parameters].

Epidemiological studies indicate an increased cardiovascular risk in users of combined oral contraceptives (COC) but not progestagen-only preparations. A specially high risk was observed in women older than 35 years with additional cardiovascular risk factors like smoking or hypertension. The mechanisms underlying arterial occlusion can not be explained by hormonal effects on the vascular tonus, nor by effects on newer risk parameters like homocysteine or transforming growth factor-beta. However, CRP increases during oral and transdermal COC use, an effect which can not be observed during use

Attitudes towards the male contraceptive pill in men and women in casual and stable sexual relationships.

BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY: Men's and women's attitudes towards the male contraceptive pill and their trust in the effective use of the male pill were investigated, as well as the associated variables of reported health behaviours, perceived self-efficacy and type of sexual relationship, using a questionnaire survey. RESULTS: Although both sexes had a favourable attitude towards the male pill, females had a more positive attitude than men. Conversely, women had less trust that men would use the male pill effectively. Males in stable sexual relationships were more positive about the male pill

Impact of different contraceptive methods on quality of life in rural women of the Jiangsu province in China.

BACKGROUND: The combined oral contraceptives (COCs) and intrauterine devices (IUDs) are the most common contraceptive methods used by women. Women's choices of contraceptive method are largely affected by the safety and efficacy of contraceptive methods as well as by change in women's quality of life. However, there are still scanty data focusing on the impact of COC or IUD on quality of life in women, especially in China. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol tablets (Marvelon) and Yuangong-Cu220 IUD (YCu220 IUD) on quality of life in rural wome

Distal migration of a floating carotid thrombus in a patient using oral contraceptives: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: We report the case of a patient with distal migration of a floating carotid thrombus caused by oral contraceptives. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old woman using oral contraceptives suffered from dysarthria and gait disturbance. Examinations, including ultrasound and cerebral arteriogram, revealed a floating thrombus at the left carotid bifurcation with no stenosis. Despite antithrombotic therapy, the floating carotid thrombus migrated to the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery, resulting in a severe stroke. CONCLUSION: Some floating thrombi are resistant to conservative therapy

Negative opinions about cancer screening and contraceptive measures by female emergency department patients.

We sought to determine the extent to which adult female emergency department participants viewed two women's cancer screening and two contraceptive measures negatively. The study also explored the relationship between having a negative opinion about these measures and participant demography, lack of knowledge, and lack of usage of these measures. Few women expressed negative opinions about these measures. Lack of knowledge about and lack of use of these measures were associated with having negative opinions on these cancer screening and contraceptive measures. Having any negative opinion about
