Evaluation of efficacy and safety of anterior corpus callosotomy with keyhole in refractory seizures.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of anterior corpus callosotomy with a keyhole approach on refractory seizures and to evaluate this procedure for drop attacks (DAs) and generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCSs). METHODS: All refractory seizure patients underwent anterior corpus callosotomy (n=31) without other epilepsy surgery. Seizure response and procedure complications were evaluated. RESULTS: Seizure types included GTCS (n=26), and atonic or tonic seizures with DA (n=9). In GTCS patients, 84.6% had >or=50% decrease in seizure frequency, and 61.5% had

Interhemispheric callosal transfer in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: an event-related potential study.

Although subtypes of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder have been recognized for some time, few studies have investigated neurophysiological differences that may reflect these. Here, adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-inattentive type, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-combined type and controls performed a simple reaction time laterality task (the Poffenberger) during 128-channel electroencephalography recording. Visual-evoked potentials were used to calculate interhemispheric transfer times. As expected for controls, mean right-to-left transfer time was faster

Fast recognition of social emotions takes the whole brain: interhemispheric cooperation in the absence of cerebral asymmetry.

Hemispheric asymmetry in emotional perception has been traditionally studied for basic emotions and very little is known about laterality for more complex social emotions. Here, we used the "redundant target paradigm" to investigate interhemispheric asymmetry and cooperation for two social emotions in healthy subjects. Facial expressions of flirtatiousness or arrogance were briefly presented either unilaterally in the left (LVF) or right visual field (RVF), or simultaneously to both visual fields (BVF) while participants responded to the target expression (flirtatious or arrogant, counterbalan

Vascular chorea: case report with pathology.

We report a patient with long-standing systemic hypertension who developed progressive generalized chorea and dementia beginning at 70 years of age with no family history or other features to suggest Huntington's disease. At postmortem examination, congophilic angiopathy and atherosclerosis causing neostriatal neuronal loss and gliosis were found, in addition to plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the cortex. This case is a rare demonstration of a vascular pathology causing late onset generalized chorea in association with dementia due to Alzheimer's-type cortical changes.

Interconnections of the visual cortex with the frontal cortex in the rat.

Horseradish peroxidase conjugated to wheat germ agglutinin (WGA-HRP) and autoradiography of tritiated leucine were used to trace the cortical origins and terminations of the connections between the visual and frontal cortices in the rat. Ipsilateral reciprocal connections between each subdivision of the visual cortex (areas 17, 18a and 18b) and the posterior half of the medial part of the frontal agranular cortex (PAGm), and their laminar organizations were confirmed. These connections did not appear to have a significant topographic organization. Although in areas 17 and 18b terminals or cell

Congenital ocular motor apraxia. Case reports and literature review.

Two children with congenital ocular motor apraxia (C-OMA) associated with congenital malformations of the central nervous system (CNS) are presented, and the literature is reviewed. C-OMA is an abnormality of ocular motility characterized by defective or absent voluntary horizontal gaze, associated with a characteristic head thrust. Although not rare, it is infrequently recognized. C-OMA is not a specific disease entity, but a sign. It may be associated with other static congenital CNS disorders and must be distinguished from acquired ocular motor apraxias (A-OMA) seen in progressive brain dis

The magnitudes of litter size and sex effects on brain growth of BALB/c mice.

In a sample of 67 litters of genetically uniform BALB/c mice, litter size before weaning, which ranged from 2 to 11 animals, had a strong negative and approximately linear effect on body and brain sizes at 100 days after birth. For both males and females, the difference between litters of 11 and 2 was about 3.7 g body weight and 42 mg brain weight. The difference in brain weights was similar to effects produced by severe protein-calorie undernutrition in the postnatal suckling period. The relationship between body weight and brain weight was approximately linear and the fit was not improved si

Completely thrombosed giant aneurysm of the pericallosal artery: case report.

Patients with a giant intracranial aneurysm usually present as having an intracranial space-taking lesion, but no subarachnoid hemorrhage. The authors describe a 61-year-old man with a completely thrombosed giant aneurysm at the pericallosal artery. Computed tomography scan showed a large, round, mottled, high-density area in the paramedian frontal region that had ringlike enhancement with contrast media. On cerebral angiography it was demonstrated to be an avascular mass lesion. These findings led to an initial diagnosis of falx meningioma. However, final diagnosis at operation was completely

Transient neurological deficit after therapeutic embolization of the arteries supplying the medial wall of the hemisphere, including the supplementary motor area.

A 27-year-old, right-handed woman underwent intraoperative embolization for a left parasagittal arteriovenous malformation as part of a two stage plan that included subsequent surgical resection of the arteriovenous malformation. This report describes the neurological syndrome that developed after the first procedure. The relation of these deficits to localization of function within the supplementary motor area are correlated with recent advances in our understanding of this region.

[Right hemiasomatognosia and sensation of amputation caused by left subcortical lesion. Role of callosal disconnection].

A 72-year-old right-handed hypertensive man presented with a right brachial monoplegia, and hypesthesia of the right half of the body to touch and pricking, sparing the face. A CT scan 2 weeks later showed a spontaneous hyperdense area corresponding to a left subcortical parietal hematoma. The patient used his spontaneous language to express body image disturbances: intense prolonged feeling of amputation related to the upper limb and foot on the right side, hemiasomatognosia without anosognosia, autotopagnosia. Also associated were a right-sided visual negligence and a more general inability

Interhemispheric intradural cyst.

Intracranial intradural cyst represents a rare congenital malformation of the dura. Computed tomography and autopsy findings in a child with a rapid and progressive enlargement of the head indicated the presence of a large interhemispheric cystic mass. A large dural-like interhemispheric cyst was confirmed at autopsy.

Murine central nervous system infection by a viral temperature-sensitive mutant: a subacute disease leading to demyelination.

Temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants of viruses may represent an important mechanism for viral persistence. Ts mutants of different complementation groups of vesicular stomatitus virus (VSV) have shown various disease patterns in infected mice which were at variance with the clinical and pathologic features of wild-type virus infection. To investigate whether neurovirulence of different ts mutants was dependent on the individual mutant or on the biochemical defect(s) common to all members of a complementation group, we infected mice with ts G32 VSV, a mutant of the same complementation group III

[Optic ataxia localised in the left side of both 2 left homonymous visual hemifields].

Ocular ataxia localised to the left limbs on the left homonymous visual hemifields occurred after section of the right parieto-occipital junction zone performed to remove an intraventricular tumour. Since the right upper limb was unaffected, it must be presumed that, in man, there are two types of occipito-frontal connections, direct and crossed.

Along-tract statistical mapping of white matter abnormalities in children with SeLECTS.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Emerging evidence suggests that self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS) may reflect atypical neurodevelopment. As WM maturation extends from the second trimester through adolescence, this study aimed to identify regions of delayed or aberrant white matter (WM) development in children with SeLECTS using along-tract statistical mapping for precise localization of microstructural alterations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 38 children with SeLECTS and 31 healthy controls underwent diffusion-weighted MRI scan. Fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), a

A review on diffusion tensor imaging-based comprehensive intelligent diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

AI-assisted early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has substantial clinical value, and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), which captures white matter microstructural alterations, has considerable potential across the AD continuum. However, major barriers to clinical translation remain. This review systematically evaluated the evolution of algorithmic paradigms, the effectiveness of multimodal fusion, and barriers to clinical generalization in DTI-based AD diagnosis. Using an "Input-Model-Fusion" evaluation framework, we analyzed 98 studies published from 2010 to 2026 and compared sample size

The micro-structural changes in white matter fibers associated with anxiety and depression in moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnea.

This study compared the effectiveness of Automated Fiber Quantification (AFQ) and Tract-Based Spatial Statistics (TBSS) in detecting white matter (WM) changes in patients with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), aiming to identify the more suitable method for investigating WM alterations of OSA patients. It also explored the potential neuropathological links between WM changes and anxiety/depression in OSA. Thirty-three untreated patients with moderate-severe OSA and 28 good sleepers without sleep disorders underwent 3.0T MRI scans. TBSS was used to construct WM skeletons and com

Abnormal resting-state functional connectivity in anhedonia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Anhedonia is a treatment-resistant symptom of major depressive disorder and has prompted neuroimaging studies aimed at clarifying its neural basis. However, findings from seed-based resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) studies remain inconsistent. We conducted a whole-brain meta-analysis to synthesize rsFC alterations associated with anhedonia. PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched up to June 14, 2026. Two researchers independently screened eligible studies and analyzed anhedonia-related rsFC. Subgroup analyses, jackknife sensitivity analyses, meta-regression, and publicatio
