Hygrometry behavior during high-flow nasal oxygen therapy and non-invasive mechanical ventilation: A narrative review of bench to clinical studies.

Recently, there has been growing interest in knowing the best hygrometry level during high-flow nasal oxygen and non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and its potential influence on the outcome. Various studies have shown that breathing cold and dry air results in excessive water loss by nasal mucosa, reduced mucociliary clearance, increased airway resistance, reduced epithelial cell function, increased inflammation, sloughing of tracheal epithelium, and submucosal inflammation. With the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic, using high-flow nasal oxygen with a heated humidifier has become an emerging fo

Predicting altered bone biomechanics in juvenile mice: insights from microgravity simulation, loading interventions, and Raman Spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Microgravity, a condition experienced in a spatial environment, poses unique challenges to the skeletal system, particularly in juvenile organisms. This study aimed to investigate alterations in bone biomechanics of juvenile mice due to unloading - that simulates microgravity in the laboratory-and the effects of a bone-loading intervention. We compared bone compositional and mechanical properties between 21-six-week-old C57Bl/6 from a control group (wild type) and a group that underwent a tail-suspension unloading protocol to mimic microgravity (MG). The second group (MG) experienc

Surface Degradation of Thin-Layer Al/MgF2 Mirrors under Exposure to Powerful VUV Radiation.

Thin-layer Al/MgF2 coatings are currently used for extraterrestrial far-UV astronomy as the primary and secondary mirrors of telescopes (such as "Spektr-UF"). Successful Hubble far-UV measurements have been performed thanks to MgF2 on Al mirror coatings. Damage of such thin-layer coatings has been previously studied under exposure to high-energy electrons/protons fluxes and in low Earth orbit environments. Meanwhile, there is an interest to test the stability of such mirrors under the impact of extreme radiation fluxes from pulsed plasma thrusters as a simulation of emergency onboard situation

Incompletely Decellularized Tracheal Matrix Scaffold for Tissue Engineering.

BACKGROUND: Dense cartilaginous extracellular matrix makes decellularization and repopulation of tracheal cartilage difficult. However, the dense matrix isolates cartilaginous antigens from the recipient's immune system. Therefore, allorejection may be avoided by removing antigens from noncartilaginous tissues. In this study, incompletely decellularized tracheal matrix scaffolds were developed for tracheal tissue engineering. METHODS: Brown Norway rat tracheae were decellularized with 4% sodium deoxycholate treatment. The cell and antigen removal efficacy, histoarchitecture, surface ultrastru

Research Progress in Diffusion Spectrum Imaging.

Studies have demonstrated that many regions in the human brain include multidirectional fiber tracts, in which the diffusion of water molecules within image voxels does not follow a Gaussian distribution. Therefore, the conventional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) that hypothesizes a single fiber orientation within a voxel is intrinsically incapable of revealing the complex microstructures of brain tissues. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) employs a pulse sequence with different b-values along multiple gradient directions to sample the diffusion information of water molecules in the entire q-sp

A finite porous-viscoelastic model capturing mechanical behavior of human cervix under multi-step spherical indentation.

The cervix is a soft tissue exhibiting time-dependent behavior under mechanical loads. The cervix is a vital mechanical barrier to protect the growing fetus. The remodeling of the cervical tissue, characterized by an increase in time-dependent material properties, is necessary for a safe parturition. The failure of its mechanical function and accelerated tissue remodeling is hypothesized to lead to preterm birth, which is birth before 37 weeks of gestation. To understand the mechanism of the time-dependent behavior of the cervix under compressive states, we employ a porous-viscoelastic materia

The biomechanics of chewing and suckling in the infant: A potential mechanism for physiologic metopic suture closure.

Craniosynostosis is a condition with neurologic and aesthetic sequelae requiring invasive surgery. Understanding its pathobiology requires familiarity with the processes underlying physiologic suture closure. Animal studies have shown that cyclical strain from chewing and suckling influences the closure of cranial vault sutures, especially the metopic, an important locus of craniosynostosis. However, there are no human data correlating strain patterns during chewing and suckling with the physiologically early closure pattern of the metopic suture. Furthermore, differences in craniofacial morph

Heavily T2-weighted imaging findings of spinal cord swelling in dogs with intervertebral disc extrusion.

This study investigated causes of attenuation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) signal on heavily T2-weighted (T2W) images in dogs with thoracolumbar disc extrusion. Medical records and magnetic resonance images were retrospectively reviewed. Dogs were classified into the following grades; grade 1, non-ambulatory paraparesis; grade 2, paraplegia with deep pain perception and grade 3, paraplegia without deep pain perception. The length of intramedullary T2W hyperintensity of the spinal cord, cranial/ caudal expansion of extradural compressive materials (ECM), and the CSF signal attenuation were meas

Image-level trajectory inference of tau pathology using variational autoencoder for Flortaucipir PET.

PURPOSE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) studies revealed that abnormal deposition of tau spreads in a specific spatial pattern, namely Braak stage. However, Braak staging is based on post mortem brains, each of which represents the cross section of the tau trajectory in disease progression, and numerous studies were reported that do not conform to that model. This study thus aimed to identify the tau trajectory and quantify the tau progression in a data-driven approach with the continuous latent space learned by variational autoencoder (VAE). METHODS: A total of 1080 [18F]Flortaucipir brain positro
