Use of sensitivity analysis to assess reliability of metabolic and physiological models.

Because ethical considerations often preclude directly determining the human health effects of treatments or interventions by experimentation, such effects are estimated by extrapolating reactions predicted from animal experiments. Under such conditions, it must be demonstrated that the reliability of the extrapolated predictions is not excessively affected by inherent data limitations and other components of model specification. This is especially true of high-level models composed of ad hoc algebraic equations whose parameters do not correspond to specific physical properties or processes. M

Paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx CT and MRI.

Neoplastic disease of the nose, paranasal sinuses, the nasopharynx and the parapharyngeal space requires thorough assessment of location and extent in order to plan appropriate treatment. CT allows the deep soft tissue planes to be evaluated and provides a complement to the physical examination. It is especially helpful in regions involving thin bony structures (paranasal sinuses, orbita); here CT performs better than MRI. MRI possesses many advantages over other imaging modalities caused by its excellent tissue contrast. In evaluating regions involving predominantly soft tissue structures (ec

Representativeness of trauma center registries for farm injury surveillance.

Trauma center registries are the foundation for many surveillance systems that attempt to define the frequency and spectrum of various types of injuries. To assess the representativeness of trauma center-based farm injury surveillance, we evaluated data for 1986-1991 from the Marshfield Clinic/St Joseph's Hospital, a major trauma center located in Central Wisconsin. We compared the pattern of farm injuries seen in residents of the Marshfield Epidemiologic Surveillance Area (MESA), a geographically defined, population-based surveillance area, with those from outside MESA, a nonpopulation-based

Apert's syndrome: cephalometric evaluation and considerations on pathogenesis.

Apert's syndrome is a malformation characterized by abnormalities in the cranial vault, midfacial malformations, and syndactylia. The present study analyzes the lateral and frontal projections of the teleradiograms from five patients. Data were taken on the skeletal features and an attempt was made to interpret them in terms of functional matrices. We have used cephalometry as a descriptive device although the intent was also to use it to provide a perspective on the pathogenetic data derived from the literature. The hypothesis analyzed is that from the outset of craniofacial pathogenesis ther

Binding of steroids to the progestin and glucocorticoid receptors analyzed by correspondence analysis.

The relative binding affinities of over 30 steroids have been measured for the cytosol glucocorticoid receptor (GR) of thymus, liver, and hepatoma tissue culture cells and for progestin, androgen, and mineralocorticoid receptors. The data have been analyzed by correspondence analysis to reveal the singularities among the receptors of different hormonal classes, the similarities in GR of different origins, and the different specificities of the ligands. Additional data on new steroids have been injected into the system as well as results on a further parameter, namely the induction of tyrosine

Overcoming Barriers to One Health Surveillance Implementation.

The zoonotic origin of the COVID-19 pandemic renewed calls for establishing and improving One Health surveillance capabilities globally, yet a lack of universally recognized best practices and clear guidance on how to implement coordinated surveillance across multiple sectors has hindered progress. Without shared surveillance goals, multisectoral data sharing policies and standards, and interoperable tools to aid the establishment and implementation of coordinated surveillance using a One Health approach, many countries are left piecing together systems together without a way to measure succes

Where Machine Learning Fails in Predicting Emerging Contaminant Adsorption: A Decision-Oriented Framework for Model Credibility and Transferability.

Adsorption behavior of emerging contaminants (ECs) plays a central role in their environmental fate and the efficiency of artificial removal systems. Machine learning (ML) has been extensively leveraged for adsorption prediction. However, most existing research focuses primarily on model construction and application, with limited attention to systematic challenges and corresponding solutions across the modeling workflow, thereby constraining model reliability and transferability. This review systematically summarizes key challenges in model construction, including data scarcity and bias, a low

A multimodal EMG and IMU dataset for assessing the quality of exercises designed for spatially constrained environments.

Regular physical training is essential for maintaining physical fitness in environments where exercise must be performed in limited space and without direct professional supervision. In such settings, degraded exercise execution may reduce training effectiveness and increase injury risk. To address this challenge, this study aimed to develop a methodology for collecting and processing multimodal data to support autonomous, AI-driven feedback systems. We collected data from 20 healthy adults performing a structured protocol of specialized, whole-body exercises designed for spatially constrained

Drug repositioning model based on knowledge graph embedding.

Drug repositioning utilizes existing drugs for new therapeutic applications, driven by the rapid increase in disease and drug-related data. However, organizing knowledge in this field and integrating the complex and scattered data from multiple systems into a cohesive knowledge network have become urgent problems to address. In this paper, we propose a drug repositioning model based on knowledge graph embedding. The model employs multivariate relational data to embed entities and relationships in a low-dimensional vector space. It also innovatively introduces the attention mechanism into trans

Data-Driven Recursive Kinetic Modeling for Fenton Reaction.

The Fenton reaction is a widely used advanced oxidation process for water purification, valued for its simplicity and effectiveness in degrading refractory organic pollutants. However, accurately modeling its degradation kinetics remains challenging due to the complex reaction mechanism and strong sensitivity to multiple operational variables. Here, we develop a multiple estimation recursive machine learning (MERML) framework that is capable of predicting kinetic profiles from initial reaction conditions, including pollutant type, initial pollutant concentration, and Fenton reagent dosages. Linking EMR Data to REDCap: Implementation in the SOLKID Register.

Secondary use, the reuse of medical patient data stored during routine care in the hospital's electronic medical records (EMR) for research purpose is common, especially for registers and pragmatic trials. Often the medical data items are copied manually from the EMR into the used research database. This process is time consuming and error prone. In the "Safety of the Living Kidney Donor - The German National Register" (SOLKID-GNR), laboratory results gathered during control check-ups of the living donors before and after the transplantation are to be transferred from the EMR into the electron

An innovative electronic health records system for rare and complex diseases.

BACKGROUND: There exists a large number of rare and complex diseases that are neglected due to the difficulty in diagnosis and treatment. Being rare, they normally do not justify the costs of developing an especialized Electronic Health Record (EHR) system to assist doctors and patients of these diseases. In this work we propose the use of Computer applications known as Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) to address this issue. RESULTS: In this work we describe a fully customizable EHR system that uses a workflow based LIMS with an easy to adapt interface for data collection and
