Accurate and robust sparse-view angle CT image reconstruction using deep learning and prior image constrained compressed sensing (DL-PICCS).

BACKGROUND: Sparse-view CT image reconstruction problems encountered in dynamic CT acquisitions are technically challenging. Recently, many deep learning strategies have been proposed to reconstruct CT images from sparse-view angle acquisitions showing promising results. However, two fundamental problems with these deep learning reconstruction methods remain to be addressed: (1) limited reconstruction accuracy for individual patients and (2) limited generalizability for patient statistical cohorts. PURPOSE: The purpose of this work is to address the previously mentioned challenges in current

Deep Learning-Based Post-Processing of Real-Time MRI to Assess and Quantify Dynamic Wrist Movement in Health and Disease.

While morphologic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice for the evaluation of ligamentous wrist injuries, it is merely static and incapable of diagnosing dynamic wrist instability. Based on real-time MRI and algorithm-based image post-processing in terms of convolutional neural networks (CNNs), this study aims to develop and validate an automatic technique to quantify wrist movement. A total of 56 bilateral wrists (28 healthy volunteers) were imaged during continuous and alternating maximum ulnar and radial abduction. Following CNN-based automatic segmentations of

Semi-automatic sigmoid colon segmentation in CT for radiation therapy treatment planning via an iterative 2.5-D deep learning approach.

Automatic sigmoid colon segmentation in CT for radiotherapy treatment planning is challenging due to complex organ shape, close distances to other organs, and large variations in size, shape, and filling status. The patient bowel is often not evacuated, and CT contrast enhancement is not used, which further increase problem difficulty. Deep learning (DL) has demonstrated its power in many segmentation problems. However, standard 2-D approaches cannot handle the sigmoid segmentation problem due to incomplete geometry information and 3-D approaches often encounters the challenge of a limited tra

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks and Transfer Learning for Measuring Cognitive Impairment Using Eye-Tracking in a Distributed Tablet-Based Environment.

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that initially presents with memory loss in the presence of underlying neurofibrillary tangle and amyloid plaque pathology. Mild cognitive impairment is the initial symptomatic stage, which is an early window for detecting cognitive impairment prior to progressive decline and dementia. We recently developed the Visuospatial Memory Eye-Tracking Test (VisMET), a passive task capable of classifying cognitive impairment in AD in under five minutes. Here we describe the development of a mobile version of VisMET to enable efficient

Semantic Deep Learning: Prior Knowledge and a Type of Four-Term Embedding Analogy to Acquire Treatments for Well-Known Diseases.

BACKGROUND: How to treat a disease remains to be the most common type of clinical question. Obtaining evidence-based answers from biomedical literature is difficult. Analogical reasoning with embeddings from deep learning (embedding analogies) may extract such biomedical facts, although the state-of-the-art focuses on pair-based proportional (pairwise) analogies such as man:woman::king:queen ("queen = -man +king +woman"). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically extract disease treatment statements with a Semantic Deep Learning (SemDeep) approach underpinned by prior knowledge and anothe

Implementation of a smartphone wireless accelerometer platform for establishing deep brain stimulation treatment efficacy of essential tremor with machine learning.

Essential tremor (ET) is a highly prevalent movement disorder. Patients with ET exhibit a complex progressive and disabling tremor, and medical management often fails. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been successfully applied to this disorder, however there has been no quantifiable way to measure tremor severity or treatment efficacy in this patient population. The quantified amelioration of kinetic tremor via DBS is herein demonstrated through the application of a smartphone (iPhone) as a wireless accelerometer platform. The recorded acceleration signal can be obtained at a setting of the su

A Comparative Study of Unsupervised and Deep Learning Methods for Automatic Segmentation of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm on CT Images: Preliminary Results.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Considering that most AAAs remain asymptomatic until they are close to rupture, an efficient workflow for the accurate detection and delineation is crucial for the clinical outcome. In this study, we conduct a comparative analysis of two different AAA segmentation algorithms using X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) images from 18 patients diagnosed with AAA, which have not been used in similar studies before. The methodologies employed include an in-house segmentation algorithm based on conventional image analysis tec

Beyond Diagnosis: A Systematic Review of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning in Monitoring Iron Overload and Organ Toxicity in Beta-Thalassemia.

Transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (B-TM) is complicated by progressive iron overload, remaining a primary cause of organ toxicity and mortality despite chelation therapy advances. Accurate monitoring of hepatic and cardiac iron levels is crucial. Traditional methods, like serum ferritin and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2* relaxometry, improved outcomes but suffer from biological variability, operator dependence, and reduced precision in severe iron overload. Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) show promise in overcoming these limitations by automa

A Fluorescence-Based Sensor Combined with Chemometric and Deep Learning Approaches for Detecting and Quantifying Coconut Milk Fraud in Bovine Milk.

Bovine milk adulteration with coconut milk poses a significant threat to food safety, as both liquids are visually similar yet nutritionally distinct. This study presents an integrated analytical framework combining excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy with chemometric and deep learning techniques to detect and quantify coconut milk adulteration in bovine milk across nine concentration levels (0-100% v/v). Parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) resolved two dominant fluorescent components, tryptophan (λ ex/em: 290/350 nm) and riboflavin (λ ex/em: 450/525 nm), whose scores dec
