Microbial succession, identification, and spoilage potential of dominant bacteria in ready-to-eat salmon under different storage conditions.

As a popular high-value seafood with rich nutritional benefits, ready-to-eat salmon is highly susceptible to microbial spoilage, posing risks to its quality and food safety. This study investigated bacterial community dynamics in commercial ready-to-eat salmon under different temperatures (4 °C/25 °C) combined with packaging conditions (aerobic/vacuum) using high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and further explored the species-specific spoilage characteristics of five specific spoilage organisms (SSOs) via culture-dependent methods. The results revealed that bacteria under vacuum storage

The Critical Role of Resilience in the Onset of Major Depressive Disorder and Its Influence Through Eating Behaviors and Psychological Needs.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), a condition characterized by an undertreated trajectory and frequently marked by a chronic course, is broadly acknowledged to be a critical public health issue worldwide. While substantial evidence is available showing the significant role of resilience in depression, the current understanding of mediating factors influencing this relationship in the early stages of MDD remains limited. To fill this gap in the literature, in the present study, we explored the effect of eating behaviors and basic psychological needs in a cohort of individuals newly diagnosed wit

Preoperative Eating Patterns and Their Effect on Post-operative Outcomes in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery: A Cohort Study of 1550 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative outcomes after metabolic and bariatric (MBS) can vary due to preoperative behaviors and psychological factors, with several eating patterns (EPs), including eating disorders (EDs), often associated with suboptimal weight loss. Some guidelines even consider EDs a contraindication for MBS. This study examined the impact of EPs on long-term outcomes after MBS. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on prospectively collected data from 1550 patients who underwent primary Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or sleeve gastrectomy (SG) between 2010 and 2018. Patients w

The impact of weight loss interventions on disordered eating symptoms in people with overweight and obesity: a systematic review & meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether weight loss interventions worsen disordered eating in people living with overweight/obesity. We aimed to systematically evaluate the association between weight loss interventions and disordered eating. METHODS: Six databases were searched from inception until September 2024. Trials of weight loss interventions in people with overweight/obesity were included if they reported a validated score for disordered eating on either the Eating Disorder Examination Interview or the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire pre- and post-intervention. Interventions inclu

What Makes Personalized Treatment Work? Mechanisms of Change in Personalized Treatment for Eating Disorders: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Eating disorders (EDs) are severe illnesses with high rates of mortality; however, evidence-based ED treatments only work for 50% of individuals. Part of the reason that treatments do not work is that EDs are highly heterogenous, signifying a need to personalize treatment. As such, idiographic (i.e., one-person) methods have been used to develop personalized treatment for EDs. Our team demonstrated that a new Transdiagnostic Network-Informed Personalized Treatment (T-NIPT-ED) that uses idiographic modeling to select evidence-based treatment modules for EDs was feasible, acceptable, and decreas

The role of perceived parental overprotection in women's restrained eating behavior: A moderated mediation model of alexithymia, perfectionism, and asceticism.

Restrained eating behavior (REB) refers to the tendency to rigidly restrict one's eating behavior in everyday life to influence body shape or weight. Parental overprotection, alexithymia, perfectionism, and asceticism are associated with REB among women. However, no studies have examined these variables simultaneously, integrating them into a theoretical model. In the current study, the combined influences of these variables on women's REB were tested. A total of 412 women (Mage = 23.53 ± 4.24; range = 16-54) completed well-known self-report measures: Parental Bonding Instrument, Toronto Alexi

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) associate with alterations in adipokine levels and eating behavior in the first 2 years of life.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The non-degradable poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are 'Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals' (EDCs), a group of chemicals that interfere with endocrine processes in the human body and potentially have adverse effects on several developmental domains in children. Particularly when PFAS exposure occurs during susceptive periods, including 'the first 1000 days' of life. Human milk is an important PFAS exposure pathway. In contrast to breastfeeding, PFAS have been thought to negatively influence growth, body composition development and metabolic health. However, exact me

The Chinese Version of the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 Adapted for Pregnant Women: Psychometric Properties and Associations With Diet Quality.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a special period that is strongly influenced by dietary interventions, and many pregnant women develop gestational diabetes caused by conditions such as poor diet. Eating behavior interventions for women during this period are therefore very important, but unfortunately, there is a lack of established studies on intuitive eating in pregnant women. METHODS: This study examined the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the IES-2 scale adopted in a group of pregnant women, as well as the relationship between intuitive eating characteristics and dietary quality.

"Recover-But Not Too Much": Experiences of Weight-Centric Care and Weight Stigma in Higher Levels of Care for Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with atypical anorexia (atypical AN) often require higher levels of care (HLOC). Paradoxically, elements of HLOC may negatively impact atypical AN patients via weight-centric care and weight stigma. We examined patients with a history of atypical AN in HLOC and investigated their perceptions of weight stigma and related impacts. METHOD: Data originated from a longitudinal study of patients with a history of atypical AN and involved a sub-sample of all patients who attended HLOC. Seventeen adults (Mage = 32.4, SD = 8.8; 88% cisgender women, one trans man, one nonbinary pers

Medical management and differential diagnosis of restrictive eating disorders in men: a case study report with co-produced recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Males with eating disorders (EDs) are an underrepresented population whose symptomatology and treatment needs are poorly understood, having been overlooked in clinical research to date. The role of gastrointestinal disorders, such as gastroparesis, in the context of restrictive EDs is similarly under-explored. Making use of emerging evidence regarding conditions that co-occur with severe EDs to consider potential differential diagnoses in cases of complex and uncertain symptomatology can assist in providing more individualised and empathetic care, preventing avoidable outcomes, inc

Eating disorder presentations to a child and adolescent mental health service in the UK before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have reported an increase in new-onset adolescent eating disorder (ED) patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, with some studies showing a change in illness presentation. This study aimed to replicate and expand on previous work by further examining changes in illness and demographic characteristics. METHOD: Changes in the number of new ED referrals to a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service were examined between 2019 and 2022. Additional analyses explored changes in duration of symptoms, weight-for-height, the need for more intensive care, age, and socioeconomic

Symptom Severity and Duration of COVID-19 Are Correlated with the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) Among Hospitalized Elderly Patients.

BACKGROUND: Coronaviruses belong to a broad group of viruses that can infect both humans and animals, leading to a range of illnesses. To protect the host from pathogenic agents, it is essential to enhance the immune system's efficiency. Proper nutrition of patients reduces the risk of secondary bacterial infections. Therefore, our research aimed to investigate the relationship between the Healthy Eating Index and the severity of symptoms and disease duration in older adults with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 elderly patients

Food and body-related attentional biases in children and adolescents with eating disorder symptoms, overweight and obesity: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Disordered eating behaviors (DEBs), including restrictive eating, binge eating and purging, are associated with mental health problems and an increased risk of eating disorders (EDs), which often occur in adolescence and can have serious health consequences. In addition, the increasing rates of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents raise concerns about their associated physical and mental health risks. Attentional biases (ABs) to food- and body-related cues have been proposed as cognitive mechanisms that contribute to the development and maintenance of EDs and are
