Incrimination and impact on recovery times and effects of BN nanostructures on antineoplastic drug-electronic density study.

CONTEXT: By delivering the drug to the intended cell location, the use of nanomaterials in the drug delivery system may influence how the patient receives the medication and may assist in mitigating severe side effects. Density functional theory was used to assess the use of boron carbon nitride nanocages (BNCNCs), boron nitride (BNNSs), and boron carbon nitride nanosheets (BNCNSs) as melphalan (Mln) drug carriers in both the gaseous and fluid phases. We systematically examined the dipole moment, density of states, frontier molecular orbital, and optimal adsorption energy to understand the tar

Biomimetic Design of a Dynamic M-O-V Pyramid Electron Bridge for Enhanced Nitrogen Electroreduction.

Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) offers a sustainable route for ammonia synthesis; however, current electrocatalysts are limited in achieving optimal performance within narrow potential windows. Herein, inspired by the heliotropism of sunflowers, we present a biomimetic design of Ru-VOH electrocatalyst, featuring a dynamic Ru-O-V pyramid electron bridge for eNRR within a wide potential range. In situ spectroscopy and theoretical investigations unravel the fact that the electrons are donated from Ru to V at lower overpotentials and retrieved at higher overpotentials, maintaini

Pyrogenic carbon modulating TCE dehalogenation through snorkeling electrons under sulfate-reducing conditions.

Microbial dehalogenation, using obligate and facultative organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB), has been widely used to remediate halohydrocarbon-polluted sites. Owing to the scarcity of OHRB, and poor efficiency in H2-mediating interspecies electron transfer, microbial dehalogenation relying on OHRB is easily disturbed by Fe(III), sulfate, and nitrate as electron competitors. In the present study, pyrogenic carbon, featuring electron snorkeling, was introduced into the process of microbial dehalogenation, which facilitated the electron transfer from electro-active microbes to halohydrocarbon

Masking Strategy Constructed Metal Coordination Hydrogels with Improved Mechanical Properties for Flexible Electronic Sensors.

Metal coordination hydrogels (MC-HGs) that introduce dynamically coordinate bonds together with metal ionic conduction have attracted considerable attention in flexible electronics. However, the traditional soaking method alleged to have technical scalability faces the challenge of forming MC-HGs with a "core-shell" structure, which undoubtedly reduces the whole mechanical properties and ionic stimulation responsiveness required for flexible electronics materials. Herein, a novel strategy referred to as "masking" has been proposed based on the theory of the valence bond and coordination chemis

Longevity of dental restorations in Sjogren's disease patients using electronic dental and health record data.

BACKGROUND: Decreased salivary secretion is not only a risk factor for carious lesions in Sjögren's disease (SD) but also an indicator of deterioration of teeth with every restorative replacement. This study determined the longevity of direct dental restorations placed in patients with SD using matched electronic dental record (EDR) and electronic health record (EHR) data. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using EDR and EHR data of Indiana University School of Dentistry patients who have a SD diagnosis in their EHR. Treatment history of patients during 15 years with SD (cases

Tenosynovitis with psammomatous calcification-Analysis by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy.

Tenosynovitis with psammomatous calcification (TPC) is an extremely rare condition. It was first described as a characteristic subtype of idiopathic calcifying tenosynovitis, with only 40 cases reported to date. Here, we present a case of TPC affecting a female patient in her late teens, with no relevant medical history. She presented with discomfort and pain in the right first toe. A 10-mm mushroom-like calcified mass was observed in the metatarsophalangeal joint on radiographs. The surgical specimen revealed chronic synovitis with calcification. Numerous psammomatous bodies are observed in t

Self-Adhesive and Self-Sustainable Bioelectronic Patch for Physiological Feedback Electronic Modulation of Soft Organs.

Bionic electrical stimulation (Bio-ES) aims to achieve personalized therapy and proprioceptive adaptation by mimicking natural neural signatures of the body, while current Bio-ES devices are reliant on complex sensing and computational simulation systems, thus often limited by the low-fidelity of simulated electrical signals, and failure of interface information interaction due to the mechanical mismatch between soft tissues and rigid electrodes. Here, the study presents a flexible and ultrathin self-sustainable bioelectronic patch (Bio-patch), which can self-adhere to the lesion area of organ

Physical and clinical results of a radiation bra in patients treated with total skin electron beam therapy.

Total skin electron beam therapy (TSEBT) in female patients with large or pendulous breasts is usually associated with shaded inframammary folds. In this analysis, 18 patients with cutaneous malignancy and pendulous breasts were irradiated with a radiation bra and five patients received TSEBT without bra. All patients had moderate or severe sagging of the breasts. The median inframammary dose in the radiation bra group was 89% of the prescription dose versus 4% in the group without bra. The usage of the radiation bra enables an adequate radiation dose for the inframammary folds during TSEBT wi

Quantum and Semiclassical Dynamics of Nonadiabatic Electronic Excitation of C(3P) to C1D) by Hyperthermal Collisions with N2.

The dynamics and kinetics of nonadiabatic excitation of C(3P) to C(1D) induced by hyperthermal collisions with N2 molecules are investigated using a quantum mechanical and two semiclassical nonadiabatic methods. The full-dimensional interaction potential energy surfaces and spin-orbit coupling, which facilitates the spin-forbidden process, are represented by a recently constructed diabatic potential energy matrix. The multistate quantum dynamics for selected partial waves found small transition probabilities due to the weak spin-orbit coupling. The spin-flip transition is the most favored near

Rashba effect on finite temperature magnetotransport in a dissipative quantum dot transistor with electronic and polaronic interactions.

The Rashba spin-orbit coupling induced quantum transport through a quantum dot embedded in a two-arm quantum loop of a quantum dot transistor is studied at finite temperature in the presence of electron-phonon and Hubbard interactions, an external magnetic field and quantum dissipation. The Anderson-Holstein-Caldeira-Leggett-Rashba model is used to describe the system and several unitary transformations are employed to decouple some of the interactions and the transport properties are calculated using the Keldysh technique. It is shown that the Rashba coupling alone separates the spin-up and s

Numerical characterization of the electronic and optical properties of plumbene/hBN heterobilayer using first-principles study.

We present a novel plumbene/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterobilayer with intriguing structural, electronic, and optical properties. Three different stacking patterns of the bilayer are proposed and studied under the framework of density functional theory using first-principles calculations. All the stacking configurations display direct band gaps ranging from 0.399 eV to 0.432 eV in the presence of spin orbit coupling (SOC), whereas pristine plumbene possesses an indirect band gap considering SOC. Based on binding energy calculations, the structures are found to be stable and, consequently

Electronic witnessing in the medically assisted reproduction laboratory: insights and considerations after 10 years of use.

STUDY QUESTION: What have we learnt after 10 years of electronic witnessing? SUMMARY ANSWER: When applied correctly, an electronic witnessing system can replace manual witnessing in the medically assisted reproduction lab to prevent sample mix-up. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Electronic witnessing systems have been implemented to improve the correct identification, processing, and traceability of biological materials. When non-matching samples are simultaneously present in a single workstation, a mismatch event is generated to prevent sample mix-up. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: This evaluation i

Regression fitting megavoltage depth dose curves to determine material relative electron density in radiotherapy.

The relative electron density (RED) parameter is ubiquitous throughout radiotherapy for clinical dosimetry and treatment planning purposes as it provides a more accurate description of the relevant radiological properties over mass density alone. RED is in practice determined indirectly from calibrated CT Hounsfield Units (HU). While CT images provide useful 3D information, the spectral differences between CT and clinical LINAC beams may impact the validity of the CT-ED calibration, especially in the context of novel tissue-mimicking materials where deviations from biologically typical atomic

In Vivo Verification of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Biodosimetry Using Patients Undergoing Radiation Therapy Treatment.

PURPOSE: Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) biodosimetry, used to triage large numbers of individuals incidentally exposed to unknown doses of ionizing radiation, is based on detecting a stable physical response in the body that is subject to quantifiable variation after exposure. In vivo measurement is essential to fully characterize the radiation response relevant to a living tooth measured in situ. The purpose of this study was to verify EPR spectroscopy in vivo by estimating the radiation dose received in participants' teeth. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A continuous wave L-band spectrometer

Electronic screening for unmet social needs in a pediatric pulmonary clinic: Acceptability and associations with health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Children with unmet basic needs experience worse health than more advantaged counterparts. There has been limited research on screening for unmet basic needs in pediatric subspecialty care. METHODS: Caregivers of established patients in pediatric asthma and cystic fibrosis (CF) clinics were screened for unmet basic needs with an electronic survey, which asked about concerns and stress level (5-point Likert scale) related to food, housing, transportation, health insurance, and childcare, among others. Medical record review provided patient demographic characteristics and clinical d

Cardiovascular health trajectories from age 2-12: a pediatric electronic health record study.

PURPOSE: Many children have non-ideal cardiovascular health (CVH), but little is known about the course of CVH in early childhood. We identified CVH trajectories in children and assess the generalizability of these trajectories in an external sample. METHODS: We used data spanning 2010-2018 from children aged 2-12 years within the Chicago Area Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Network-an electronic health record network. Four clinical systems comprised the derivation sample and a fifth the validation sample. Body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose were categorized as

Risk factors for local recurrence of keloids and hypertrophic scars after postoperative electron beam radiotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: Keloids and hypertrophic scars are benign fibroproliferative lesions that occur as a result of skin injury. Postoperative radiation therapy is used to reduce the recurrence rate because of the high recurrence rate with surgical treatment alone. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for recurrence after postoperative electron beam radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with keloid or hypertrophic scars with at least one lesion and who underwent postoperative electron beam radiotherapy at our institution from June 2013 to March 2022 were included in the study, while pa

Dynamic Delirium Prediction in the Intensive Care Unit using Machine Learning on Electronic Health Records.

Delirium is a syndrome of acute brain failure which is prevalent amongst older adults in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Incidence of delirium can significantly worsen prognosis and increase mortality, therefore necessitating its rapid and continual assessment in the ICU. Currently, the common approach for delirium assessment is manual and sporadic. Hence, there exists a critical need for a robust and automated system for predicting delirium in the ICU. In this work, we develop a machine learning (ML) system for real-time prediction of delirium using Electronic Health Record (EHR) data. Unlike
