This study focuses on the issue of maxillary bone developmental abnormalities in cleft palate patients, breaking through the traditional cognitive limitation of attributing the condition solely to surgical scar effects. Clinical observations revealed that maxillary retrusion also exists in unoperated cleft palate patients, leading to the hypothesis that nasal cavity pressure may have an influence on maxillary bone development in these patients. Using finite element analysis techniques, a 3-dimensional model of the soft palate-trachea region was constructed to simulate the pressure changes on t

PURPOSE: Individual facial soft tissue properties are necessary for creating individualized finite element (FE) models to evaluate medical devices such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) masks. There are no standard tools available to measure facial soft tissue elastic moduli, and techniques in literature require advanced equipment or custom parts to replicate.
METHODS: We propose a simple and inexpensive soft tissue measurement (STM) indenter device to estimate facial soft tissue elasticity at five sites: chin, cheek near lip, below cheekbone, cheekbone, and cheek. The STM device

PURPOSE: To compare the biomechanical responses of a normal mandible to an osteoporotic mandible with two-implant-supported magnetic attachments.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 3D finite-element model of a two-implant-supported mandibular overdenture with magnetic attachments was developed, and normal and osteoporotic bone samples were prepared. Four types of load were applied to the overdenture in each model: 100 N vertical and oblique loads on the right first molar, and a 100 N vertical load on the right canine and incisors. Biomechanical behaviors of the peri-implant bone, implant, and mucosa we

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Clear aligners are popular orthodontic tools because of their relatively aesthetic appearance and convenience of use. Nevertheless, bodily tooth movements still present challenges. This study evaluated various configurations of attachments placed on the mandibular canine in terms of the efficiency of canine bodily movement and correction of tipping.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A finite element model of the mandible was constructed to investigate the effects of various attachment configurations on the overall bodily movement and undesirable tipping of a mandibular canine. Canine

Sorting nexin 10 (SNX10) expression induces intestinal barrier dysfunction and inflammatory responses; in contrast, its inhibition promotes intestinal mucosal healing through sterol regulatory element-binding protein 2 (SREBP2)-mediated cholesterol synthesis. However, its regulatory mechanism for the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains unclear. In this study, we examined SNX10 and SREBP2 expression in ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). A total of 30 and 28 patients with UC and CD, respectively, were recruited. The expression of SNX10 and SREBP2 in the coloni

The geometry of implants plays a crucial role in the success of All-on-Four treatments for the lower jaw. This study builds upon prior research by evaluating the biomechanical performance of implant-supported prostheses in full-arch fixed dental restorations, specifically focusing on different implant lengths and connection types in cases of mild atrophic resorption of the mandible. Four groups were analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA): We utilized 13 or 18 mm posterior 17-degree tilting implants, each paired with two kinds of abutment connections. The external hexagon connection (EHC)

INTRODUCTION: The "All-on-four" technique addresses this by placing two vertical implants in the anterior region and two posterior implants angled up to 45°. This study evaluates stress distribution on bone, implants, abutments, gingiva, and prostheses based on posterior implant angulation, using both standard and angled neck implants. Additionally, angled neck implants were used alongside standard implants.
METHODS: To evaluate the biomechanical stress and displacement behavior of implants placed at 15°, 30°, 45°, and 30° neck-angled in the interforaminal region of using the All-on-four tech

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the biomechanical performance of various designs of cantilevered three-unit implant-supported prostheses, using two distinct prosthetic materials and under different loading conditions.
METHOD: Three mandibular models were created with varying implant positions to support a 3-unit prosthesis using two materials (Zirconia and PEKK), resulting in three different designs: distal cantilever (M1), fixed-fixed (M2), and mesial cantilever (M3). The geometric model was created by segmenting a CBCT scan of an edentulous mandible using Mimics software, followed by refinement in 3

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze the effects of maxillary molar distalization using clear aligners with different intramaxillary and intermaxillary traction via the three-dimensional (3D) finite element method.
METHODS: A 3D finite element model consisting of the maxilla, mandible, dentitions, periodontal ligaments (PDLs), attachments, and clear aligners was constructed. Five groups were established based on different traction modalities: group 1 (control group); group 2 (orthodontic mini-implants (OMIs) were implanted between the maxillary first molars and the second premolars on the

Finite Element modeling has been an extended methodology to build numerical model to simulate the behavior of the hearing system. Due to the complexity of the system and the difficulties to reduce the uncertainties of the geometric data, they result in computationally expensive models, sometimes generic, representative of average geometries. It makes it difficult to validate the model with direct experimental data from the same specimen or to establish a patient-oriented modeling strategy. In the present paper, a first attempt to automatize the process of model building is made. The source inf

AIMS: This study was conducted to systematically evaluate the biomechanical impact of varying degrees of root and bone resorption resulting from periodontitis and orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) on the mandibular anterior teeth. The objective was to determine whether these distinct resorption patterns exert a specific influence on tooth displacement and strain patterns.
METHODS: A finite element (FE) model of an idealized anterior mandible from the first premolar in the third to the fourth quadrant was developed without bone or root resorption and a constant periodontal ligament (PDL) thickn

Autotrophic denitrification in sulfur packed-bed reactors (S0PBR) has been widely employed for treating municipal secondary effluent. However, the fixed volume of packed sulfur in S0PBR restricts the ability to adjust denitrification efficiency in response to fluctuating influent nitrate levels, leading to either effluent standard exceedances or unnecessary sulfur consumption. Here, we proposed a novel method for directionally regulating nitrate removal efficiency (NRE) in S0PBR by adjusting the bed-immersion-ratio (BIR). The results demonstrated that the NRE could be effectively controlled th

PURPOSE: This study explored the bio-mechanical properties of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and carbon fiber reinforced-PEEK (CFR-PEEK) as potential alternatives to traditional dental implant materials, such as titanium (Ti) and zirconia (ZrO2). Conventional implant materials often exhibit stress shielding leading to peri-implant bone loss and implant failure.
STUDY SELECTION: Finite element analysis using a three-dimensional computer-aided-design (3D CAD) model of the jawbone with various implant materials (titanium, zirconia, PEEK, and CFR-PEEK) incorporated was implemented to assess the ef

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), renowned for its exceptional mechanical properties and bio-stability, is considered a promising alternative to traditional metal-based implants. However, the inferior bactericidal activity and the limited angiogenic and osteogenic properties of PEEK remain the three major obstacles to osseointegration in vivo. To overcome these obstacles, in this work, a versatile heterostructured nanocoating was conceived and equipped on PEEK. This nanocoating was designed to endow PEEK with the ability of photo-activated pathogen disinfection, along with enhanced angiogenesis and
