Quercus ilex L. leaves as filters of air Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb.

The study of particulate matter pollution in urban areas is of great concern due its adverse effects on human health. Roadside vegetation, intercepting and filtering it, contributes to improve air quality. The aim of the research was to investigate the capability of Q. ilex leaves, already known good biomonitors of air quality, in filtering air metals. Besides, the main derivation (i.e. air or root uptake) of the investigated metals in leaf tissue was evaluated. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb were measured in three groups of Q. ilex leaves (unwashed, water washed and chloroform wa

Role of Dietary and Environmental Factors on Thyroid Cancer in Romania: A Brief Review.

Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine tumor, accounting for about 1% of all human malignancies. There are environmental factors that can potentiate the onset of thyroid cancer, in particular pollutants, lifestyle or radiation exposure. Another major cause responsible for the appearance of thyroid cancer is the habitat in endemic areas where there is a deficit of iodine in the soil, drinking water and food. We operated using the PubMed database in order to find the articles of interest. After a wary review of the literature, we designated the relevant articles necessary for our study incl

The Relationship between Climate Change and Rheumatic Disease: A Review.

BACKGROUND: Climate change has increased wildfires, air pollution, elevations in heat, and extreme weather events. While some negative effects on health are obvious, for example, on pulmonary health, climate change's impact on rheumatic disease and autoimmune health may be less visible. SUMMARY: Multiple studies suggest that increased environmental heat is associated with gout flares and with hospitalizations for gout, likely worsens cardiovascular disease and increases biomarkers associated with inflammatory conditions. Increasing air pollution, including through smoke generated by wildfires

Synergistic effect of choline chloride/ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent with protease for eco-friendly leather dehairing.

Environmental pollution from the leather manufacturing process, particularly from the dehairing operations involving sodium sulfide and lime, poses significant ecological threats. Although enzymatic dehairing offers a cleaner alternative, it often results in incomplete hair removal and collagen damage due to poor enzyme penetration and specificity. This study introduces a novel dehairing process that combines neutral protease with a choline chloride/ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent (DES) to address these issues. This DES-protease (DES-P) system has been shown to significantly improve key

Air pollution and atherothrombosis.

Observational studies have consistently demonstrated an association between exposure to air pollution and increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This association is strongest for particulate matter (PM), of which combustion-derived particulate is an important component. Studies assessing the effects of PM exposure in vitro and in vivo have provided insight into the biological mechanisms underlying these observations. In this review we discuss the potential for inhaled particles to impact on the development and progression of atherosclerosis. Oxidative stress and inflammation are cen

Comparison of multi-media transport and transformation models: regional fugacity model vs. CalTOX.

Two multimedia environmental transport and transformation computer models are summarized and compared. The regional fugacity model published by Mackay and Paterson (1991), termed Fug3ONT, is a four compartment steady-state model designed to simulate the relative distribution of nonionic organic chemicals in a multimedia system. CalTOX is a seven compartment multimedia total exposure model for hazardous waste sites. Both models are based on the principles of fugacity. CalTOX, however, separates the soil into three layers (surface, root, and vadose) and uses a different approach to estimate the
