Dynesys® dynamic stabilization outcomes in degenerative spine surgery.

Dynesys® is a dynamic device used for posterior stabilization of the lumbar spine. The objective of this study was to analyze the clinical and radiological outcomes at a 2-year minimum follow-up. In this retrospective study, patients operated between 2009 and 2016 with Dynesys® stabilization were included. 5 different etiologies were included: disc herniation, lumbar stenosis, revision for adjacent seg- ment disease (ASD), spondylolisthesis, and scoliosis. Clinical and radiological evaluations were performed. Postoperative complications and revisions were recorded. 136 patients were included:

Scrotal Tissues: The Perfect Material for Urogenital Reconstruction.

UNLABELLED: Correction of male urogenital pathology of different severity is complicated by the anatomical aspects of the penis. Skin texture, internal structures, and perfusion dynamics of the urogenital area make it a difficult area to reconstruct. We provide our experience with axial scrotal flaps for correction of penile defects of different severity and believe that these local flaps offer sufficient tissue characteristics for proper restoration of this complex region. METHODS: Forty-eight patients were divided into 3 groups depending on penile defect genesis and severity. Axial scrotal

The Persistence of Escherichia coli Infection in German Cockroaches (Blattodea: Blattellidae) Varies Between Host Developmental Stages and is Influenced by the Gut Microbiota.

The German cockroach, Blatella germanica (L.), is a suspected vector of several enteric bacterial pathogens, including Escherichia coli, among livestock and humans. However, little is known about the factors that influence bacterial transmission by cockroaches. Here, we orally infected B. germanica with various laboratory and field strains of E. coli and examined bacterial titers over time to shed new light on the factors that influence the dynamics of infection. Our results reveal that a laboratory strain of E. coli is largely cleared within 48 h while one field isolate can persist in a major

Acute dapagliflozin administration exerts cardioprotective effects in rats with cardiac ischemia/reperfusion injury.

BACKGROUND: A sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor had favorable impact on the attenuation of hyperglycemia together with the severity of heart failure. However, the effects of acute dapagliflozin administration at the time of cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury are not established. METHODS: The effects of dapagliflozin on cardiac function were investigated by treating cardiac I/R injury at different time points. Cardiac I/R was instigated in forty-eight Wistar rats. These rats were then split into 4 interventional groups: control, dapagliflozin (SGLT2 inhibitor, 1 mg/kg)

Mobility-Preserving Surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: WFNS Spine Committee Recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Although decompression is the basis of surgical treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), under various circumstances instrumented fusion is performed as well. The rationale for mobility-preserving operations for LSS is preventing adjacent segment disease (ASD). We review the rationale for mobility preservation in ASD and discuss related topics such as indications for fusion and the evolving role of minimally invasive approaches to lumbar spine decompression. Our focus is on systematic review and consensus discussion of mobility-preserving surgical methods as related to surgery f

Neural Correlations Underlying Self-Generated Decision in the Frontal Pole Cortex during a Cued Strategy Task.

We have previously shown how the Frontal Pole cortex (FPC) neurons play a unique role in both the monitoring and evaluating of self-generated decisions during feedback in a visually cued strategy task. For each trial of this task, a cue instructed one of two strategies: to either stay with the previous goal or shift to the alternative goal. Each cue was followed by a delay period, then each choice was followed by a feedback. FPC neurons show goal-selective activity exclusively during the feedback period. Here, we studied how neural correlation dynamically changes, along with a trial in FPC. We

Rate of Spleen Length Progression Is a Marker of Outcome in Patients With Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis.

Patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) tend to develop progressive liver fibrosis and end-stage liver disease within 10-20 years.1 The International PSC Study Group declared research on surrogate endpoints a high-priority task not least for ongoing clinical trials on novel treatment options.2 The spleen in patients with PSC often enlarges even before cirrhosis develops. Transient elastography (TE) has been investigated as a dynamic and prognostic marker in PSC.3,4 However, TE is not generally accessible, measures only a small part of the right liver, and is prone to errors in obese

Pharyngeal distensibility during expiration is an independent predictor of the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pharyngeal distensibility and collapsibility reflect the passive properties of tissue in the airway, are an indicator of the ease with which an airway can be deformed and are related to the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). During normal tidal respiration, the collapsibility of the pharynx during expiration is passive without confounding by neuromuscular activation that occurs during inspiration. We evaluated the distensibility and collapsibility of the upper airway in subjects with OSA during wakefulness using sophisticated dynamic computed tomography (CT)

Effects of gabergic phenols on the dynamic and structure of lipid bilayers: A molecular dynamic simulation approach.

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate and invertebrate nervous system. GABAA receptors are activated by GABA and their agonists, and modulated by a wide variety of recognized drugs, including barbiturates, anesthetics, and benzodiazepines. The phenols propofol, thymol, chlorothymol, carvacrol and eugenol act as positive allosteric modulators on GABAA-R receptor. These GABAergic phenols interact with the lipid membrane, therefore, their anesthetic activity could be the combined result of their specific activity (with receptor proteins) as well as

The effect of group A streptococcal carrier on the epidemic model of acute rheumatic fever.

BACKGROUND: Group A streptococcus (GAS) is the most frequent cause of bacterial pharyngitis in school-aged children. The postinfection sequel as acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease that cause morbidity and mortality among young people is public health concerns in several developing countries. Asymptomatic carriage state of GAS is not fully understood in terms of host and bacterial factors. Although the ability of transmitting GAS of the asymptomatic carriers is relatively low, they may present the reservoir of the epidemic. A fraction of GAS carriers is difficult to estimat

The transmission dynamic of Madariaga Virus by bayesian phylogenetic analysis: Molecular surveillance of an emergent pathogen.

Madariaga Virus (MADV) is an emergent Alphavirus of the eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) strain complex causing epizootic epidemics. In this study the genetic diversity and the transmission dynamics of Madariaga virus has been investigated by Bayesian phylogenetics and phylodynamic analysis. A database of 32 sequences of MADV group structural polyprotein were downloaded from GenBank, aligned manually edited by Bioedit Software. ModelTest v. 3.7 was used to select the simplest evolutionary model that adequately fitted the sequence data. Neighbor-joining tree was generated using MEGA7. T

Innovative curriculum: Integrating the bio-behavioral and social science principles across the LifeStages in basic science years.

Behavioral and social science integration in clinical practice improves health outcomes across the life stages. The medical school curriculum requires an integration of the behavioral and social science principles in early medical education. We developed and delivered a four-week course entitled "LifeStages" to the first year medical students. The learning objectives of the bio-behavioral and social science principles along with the cultural, economic, political, and ethical parameters were integrated across the lifespan in the curriculum matrix. We focused on the following major domains: Grow

Successful kidney transplantation normalizes platelet function.

BACKGROUND: Uraemic platelet dysfunction is not completely understood, in part due to non-physiological platelet function assays. We have developed a physiological flow-based assay that quantifies platelet function in microlitre volumes of blood under arterial shear. The aim of this study was to characterize platelet function before and after kidney transplantation. METHODS: Ten patients scheduled for living donor kidney transplant surgery and nine healthy controls were analysed using the assay. The motional parameters of platelet behaviour on von Willebrand factor (VWF) were recorded using c

Bone biopsy in nephrology practice.

Renal osteodystrophy (ROD), a group of metabolic bone diseases secondary to chronic kidney disease (CKD), still represents a great challenge to nephrologists. Its management is tailored by the type of bone lesion - of high or low turnover - that cannot be accurately predicted by serum biomarkers of bone remodeling available in daily clinical practice, mainly parathyroid hormone (PTH) and alkaline phosphatase (AP). In view of this limitation, bone biopsy followed by bone quantitative histomorphometry, the gold-standard method for the diagnosis of ROD, is still considered of paramount importance

Injury Resistance in the Setting of Liver Fibrosis Is Accompanied by the Inhibition of High-Mobility Group Box-1 Translocation and Release.

BACKGROUND: Injury resistance occurring in the setting of liver fibrosis is an interesting phenomenon not yet well characterized. In the present study, we investigated dynamically the injury resistance against acute challenge using animal models of hepatic fibrosis and spontaneous resolution, and focused on high-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1), an important proinflammatory mediator. METHODS: The hepatic damage of control, fibrosis (CCl4, 6 weeks), and regressive mice with or without CCl4 challenge was dynamically observed and compared. The translocation and release of HMGB1 were assessed by immu

Longitudinal MRI evaluation of neuroprotective effects of pharmacologically induced hypothermia in experimental ischemic stroke.

Pharmacologically induced hypothermia (PIH) shows promising neuroprotective effects after stroke insult. However, the dynamic evolution of stroke infarct during the hypothermic therapy has not been understood very well. In the present study, MRI was utilized to longitudinally characterize the infarct evolution in a mouse model of ischemic stroke treated by PIH using the neurotensin agonist HPI201. Adult male C57BL/6 mice underwent permanent occlusion of the right middle cerebra artery (MCA). Each animal received a vehicle or HPI201 intraperitoneal injection. The temporal changes of stroke lesi

Identification of Trypanosomatids by detecting Single Nucleotide Fingerprints using DNA analysis by dynamic chemistry with MALDI-ToF.

Protozoan parasites of the Trypanosomatidae family can cause devastating diseases in humans and animals, such as Human African Trypanosomiasis or Sleeping Sickness, Chagas disease and Leishmaniasis. Currently, there are molecular assays for detecting parasitic infections and their post-treatment monitoring based on nucleic acid amplification, but there are still certain limitations which limit the development of assays that can detect and discriminate between parasite infections with a single test. Here, we present the development of a novel molecular assay for the rapid identification of Tryp

Molecular cloning and in silico characterization of knottin peptide, U2-SCRTX-Lit2, from brown spider (Loxosceles intermedia) venom glands.

Inhibitor cystine knots (ICKs) are a family of structural peptides with a large number of cysteine residues that form intramolecular disulfide bonds, resulting in a knot. These peptides are involved in a variety of biological functions including predation and defense, and are found in various species, such as spiders, scorpions, sea anemones, and plants. The Loxosceles intermedia venom gland transcriptome identified five groups of ICK peptides that represent more than 50 % of toxin-coding transcripts. Here, we describe the molecular cloning of U2-Sicaritoxin-Lit2 (U2-SCRTX-Lit2), bioinformatic
