This study investigated whether intact young Black MSM differed from their circumcised counterparts regarding condom use behaviors and perceptions and HIV/Chlamydia/gonorrhea. Young Black MSM completed a self-interview, including a pictorial item assessing circumcision status and measures of condom use. Twenty-seven percent of 388 participants reported not being circumcised. With one exception, no associations tested approached significance. The mean frequency of unprotected insertive anal sex for circumcised men was about twice as high compared to those intact (P = .04). Intact young Black MS

We evaluated motorcycle taxi ('boda-boda') drivers in Kampala for the prevalence of HIV/sexually transmitted infections. We used respondent-driven sampling to recruit a cross-sectional sample of boda-boda drivers. We collected data through audio computer-assisted self-administered interviews. Men were tested for HIV, syphilis serology using Rapid Plasma Reagin and enzyme immunoassay, and Chlamydia and gonorrhoea using urine polymerase chain reaction. We recruited 683 men. Median age was 26 years; 59.4% were single. The prevalence of HIV was 7.5% (95% CI 5.2-10.0), of positive syphilis serology

This protocol describes a hybrid type 2 effectiveness-implementation trial to examine the effectiveness, maintenance, and reach of an mHealth-mediated intervention to promote HIV and psychological health among Black same gender loving men. The intervention was developed by and for Black same gender loving men and seeks to reduce social isolation, increase access to culturally affirming healthcare, and decrease barriers to stable housing and economic empowerment due to interpersonal, institutional, and structural stigma. It does so through promoting individual-level health education and motivat

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men remain disproportionately affected by HIV globally and in China. Despite the availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and postexposure prophylaxis (PEP), their uptake remains suboptimal. Previous studies have rarely integrated both sexual behavioral factors and prevention-related cognitive factors. A clearer understanding of heterogeneity in HIV exposure and prevention literacy is needed to inform targeted HIV prevention strategies.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify latent subgroups of men who have sex with men based on sexual behaviors and p

BACKGROUND: Long-acting injectable PrEP (LA-PrEP) is a novel HIV prevention modality recently approved in Europe, offering an important addition to HIV prevention options. Understanding user perceptions early is critical for anticipating uptake, addressing barriers, and shaping implementation. This study aimed to identify the latent qualitative themes surrounding LA-PrEP among Dutch-speaking men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) in the Netherlands and Belgium, and to assess how these perceptions associate with their intention to use LA-PrEP.
METHODS: We utilised data from the cross-sectional PROTEC

Young Black sexual minority men (YB-SMM) who are living with HIV not only face numerous challenges to their health but also demonstrate a range of resilience processes that can be augmented to improve HIV care engagement. We adapted a previously developed in-person group intervention, Brothers Building Brothers By Breaking Barriers, into a remotely delivered telehealth program (Tele-B6), with a goal to enhance existing resilience by building social capital and affirming intersectional identities among YB-SMM living with HIV. We enrolled 60 participants in Atlanta, Georgia, into a pilot randomi

BACKGROUND: Anal squamous cell carcinoma is increasingly prevalent among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV, related to anal dysplasia associated with persistent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection. While high-resolution-anoscopy (HRA), using colposcopy and a rigid anoscope, is the diagnostic standard, it is resource-intensive and not widely available. This study evaluates flexible endoscopy compared to cytology and anal HPV for detecting high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) in a structured screening protocol.

OBJECTIVE: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) are the most commonly reported sexually transmitted infections globally. Anorectal CT/NG detection among men who have sex with men (MSM) and coinfections is common. Epidemiological studies suggest that CT/NG coinfections might result in greater bacterial load and transmissibility than single infection. The purpose of this study was to compare bacterial load and symptoms between CT/NG single and coinfections in MSM.
METHODS: MSM positive for CT or NG on a triple swab (throat, urethra and rectal locations combined) were enroll

BACKGROUND: Drug resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae is an urgent public health threat. The anticipated approval of 2 new antimicrobials for gonorrhea prompts the need for evidence-based rollout strategies that minimize drug resistance.
METHODS: We used a stochastic compartmental model of men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States (US) to compare 2 main strategies-equal allocation and sequential drug deployment-for 2 new and 1 existing drug and measured the time for each drug to reach a resistance prevalence threshold of 5%. We conducted broad analyses assessing the sensitivity of o

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, in Kenya. Because nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) is not widely accessible, most gonorrhea and chlamydia infections go undiagnosed and are treated only if symptomatic. World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended periodic presumptive treatment (PPT) and doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP) are both potential interventions to reduce the burden of bacterial STIs in this population. Neither has been rigorously tested a

BACKGROUND: Internalized sexual stigma is a significant psychological stressor contributing to depression among gay men. While resilience and positive sexual identity are known protective factors, their combined roles remain understudied in non-Western contexts, particularly in East Asian societies like Taiwan.
PURPOSE: This study investigated whether resilience mediates and positive sexual identity moderates the association between internalized stigma and depressive severity among Taiwanese gay men.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 234 self-identified gay men in T

In October 2022, the San Francisco Department of Public Health published guidelines for doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP) to prevent bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STI) among men who have sex with men (MSM). We evaluated awareness and use of doxy-PEP using data from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance in 2023 in San Francisco (N = 533). In the year following the publication of the guidelines, 66.6% of MSM reported awareness of doxy-PEP, and 19.3% had used it. Among MSM who are not living with HIV, awareness of doxy-PEP was associated with higher educational leve

Despite the proven effectiveness of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), its use remains low in high-incidence areas. This study examined knowledge and barriers to PrEP among individuals at risk in Southern California. From September 2022 to April 2023, we recruited adult men who have sex with men, residing in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, who were not living with HIV and not using PrEP. Recruitment occurred through targeted online advertisements and clinic-distributed materials. Statistical analyses explored associations between demographic factors and

BACKGROUND: Misalignment between self-perceived and objectively measured risk may contribute to ongoing engagement in high-risk behaviors and impede the uptake of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention services. We aimed to investigate the concordance between self-perceived and objectively measured HIV risk and to identify factors associated with risk underestimation among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Qingdao, China.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was used, with snowball sampling to recruit MSM from April 2023 to July 2024. Face-to-face interviews were used to collect de

We developed and implemented a PrEP navigation program ("SNAPS") in a NYC safety-net hospital with the objectives to co-locate navigation, clinical PrEP services, and payment assistance. Adherence and retention to PrEP-related care were assessed by mean medication possession ratios (MPRs) and number of appointments over 12 months. Compared to the pre-SNAPS cohort, the post-SNAPS cohort was less likely to be cisgender male (64.8% vs. 84.2%), White (6.5% vs. 23%) and to speak English (33.3% vs. 80.6%) (all p < 0.001). Mean MPR was lower for post-SNAPS (0.68, SD = 0.33) compared to pre-SNAPS (0.8

HIV self-testing (HIVST) has been shown to complement existing facility-based testing services and promote regular HIV testing among men who have sex with men (MSM). However, HIVST uptake among Chinese MSM remains suboptimal, with existing studies reporting a testing rate below 50%. While the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model has often been employed to understand health behaviors, its application to quantitatively investigate HIVST remains limited. An anonymous cross-sectional survey was conducted among 499 eligible MSM in Chengdu, China, from March to May 2022. The psychome

This mixed-methods study explored resilience-enabling behaviors and practices exhibited by young Latino sexual minority men (YLSMM) to cope with stigmatizing experiences attributed to their multiple minoritized identities and reduce their HIV risk. Guided by a positive deviance approach, we identified and interviewed 15 YLSMM (aged 18 to 24) with a history of regular HIV testing and lived experiences of intersectional stigma. Thematic analysis reveals multilevel strategies used by participants to mitigate the adverse effects of stigma on mental health and HIV preventive behaviors. Strategies i
