The role of biobehavioral, environmental, and social forces on oral health disparities in frail and functionally dependent nursing home elders.

The purpose of this article is to review the literature on and discuss how interactions between bio-behavioral aging, nursing home environments, and social forces shaping current health care policies have contributed to oral health disparities in frail and functionally dependent elders who reside in nursing homes. Emerging empirical evidence suggests links between poor oral health with dental plaque deposition and systemic disease, such as nursing home-acquired pneumonia. The majority of nursing home residents lack either the functional ability or the mental capacity to perform their own mouth

Social Determinants of Health and Lifetime History of Parent-Reported Concussion in School-Aged Children and Adolescents in the United States.

Social determinants of health (SDoH) are environmental and socioeconomic factors that indirectly or directly influence health. This study examined whether SDoH that might relate to health literacy or access to health care are associated with lifetime history of parent-reported concussion in school-aged children and adolescents in the United States. We hypothesized that lower parental education, living in poverty, and speaking a language other than English as the primary language in the home would be associated with a lower lifetime history of concussion. Participants were parents or caregivers

The Society for Vascular Surgery Alternative Payment Model Task Force report on opportunities for value-based reimbursement in care for patients with peripheral artery disease.

The Society for Vascular Surgery Alternative Payment Model (APM) Taskforce document explores the drivers and implications for developing objective value-based reimbursement plans for the care of patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The APM is a payment approach that highlights high-quality and cost-efficient care and is a financially incentivized pathway for participation in the Quality Payment Program, which aims to replace the traditional fee-for-service payment method. At present, the participation of vascular specialists in APMs is hampered owing to the absence of dedicated mod

Healthcare providers and community perspectives on expedited partner therapy (EPT) for use with gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

OBJECTIVES: Expedited partner therapy (EPT) is an effective strategy to reduce rates of chlamydia and gonorrhoea infection and ensure sexual partners are treated. Currently, EPT is provided to heterosexual patients; however, EPT is not routinely recommended for use with gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) because of concerns about HIV coinfection. The objective of the qualitative study was to understand provider and community views on the use of EPT with GBMSM. METHODS: Using convenience sampling methods, we recruited a sample of 18 healthcare providers and 21 GBMSM to p

Differential access to care: The role of age, insurance, and income on race/ethnicity-related disparities in adult perforated appendix admission rates.

BACKGROUND: Differences in perforated appendix admission rates (PAAR) are an ambulatory-sensitive measure of access to care. While pediatric studies report disparities in PAAR, initial adult investigations suggest a lack of racial/ethnic inequity. The objectives of this study were to (1) assess for risk-adjusted, racial/ethnic differences in PAAR among adults on a national scale, (2) consider the extent to which variations (or lack thereof) are explained by age, insurance, and income, and (3) compare results within the United States population to a national segment of the population who are co

Socioeconomic inequalities of outpatient and inpatient service utilization in China: personal and regional perspectives.

BACKGROUND: China's health system has shown remarkable progress in health provision and health outcomes in recent decades, however inequality in health care utilization persists and poses a serious social problem. While government pro-poor health policies addressed affordability as the major obstacle to equality in health care access, this policy direction deserves further examination. Our study examines the issue of health care inequalities in China, analyzing both regional and individual socioeconomic factors associated with the inequality, and provides evidence to improve governmental healt
