"An illustrative socio-biological cascade of the concentric model for health-bound networks: social determinants, social support and biological responses".

INTRODUCTION: Health has been associated with social support. Supported patients with complex health issues have a better chance of living healthier, longer lives and enjoying a better quality of life. Research indicates that physical, mental, and emotional health are connected to both biological and social determinants. METHODS: This paper proposes a conceptual, society-to-biology model, the Concentric Model for Health-Bound Networks, that explores the complexity of social support and integrates the foundational principles of systems biology and systems thinking. This transdisciplinary model

Assessing Land Use, Land Cover Changes, and Urbanization Impacts on Water Stress in West African Watersheds: A Systematic Methodological Review.

Water stress is one of the major environmental and socio-economic constraints in West Africa, where population growth, agricultural expansion, soil sealing, hydroclimatic variability, and rising pressure on surface water and groundwater rapidly transform watershed functioning. Evaluating the impacts of land use and land cover (LULC) changes and urbanization requires methodological approaches that link the spatial dynamics of landscapes to observed or simulated hydrological responses. This review provides a comparative and critical analysis of the main techniques used in the region: instrumente

Fabrication of an Antifungal PMMA Denture Nanocomposite Functionalized with Miconazole-Pectin-Silver Nanoparticles against Denture Stomatitis.

Denture stomatitis is a highly prevalent oral mucosal infection caused by Candida biofilm formation on the denture surface. In this study, an antifungal polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture nanocomposite (MCZ-P-AgNPs/PMMA) was prepared by incorporating miconazole-loaded pectin-stabilized silver nanoparticles (MCZ-P-AgNPs) into the PMMA matrix. Response surface methodology was used to finalize the synthesis of AgNPs via the pectin-mediated green reduction method. To address the poor aqueous solubility of miconazole, the β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexation strategy was employed. MCZ-P-AgNPs

Molecular and Microstructural MRI of Neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a leading cause of cognitive decline in older adults, often diagnosed late when pathology and symptoms are established, reducing treatment effectiveness. Both AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) trigger neuroinflammation, leading to molecular and microstructural changes, including oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, glial activation, synaptic and neurotransmitter disturbances, myelin degradation, and white matter dysfunction. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is also compromised. METHODS: Advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, s

Improving Primary Healthcare: Applying Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) Principles to Lebanon's Vision 2030.

Background/Objectives: While Lebanon's Vision 2030 prioritizes strengthening Lebanon's chronically constrained, fragmented, and shocked primary healthcare system, implementation is hindered by weak sensing mechanisms, misaligned spatial distribution, and poorly integrated referral pathways. This study develops a preliminary, context-specific, systems-level healthcare policy assessment and framework for primary healthcare reform by applying biomimicry principles derived from the drought-resistant root architecture of grapevine (Vitis vinifera). Methods: Publicly available data from the Lebanese

Caerin 1.1/1.9 peptides control Acinetobacter baumannii infection through combined antibacterial and host-directed immunomodulatory mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION: Acinetobacter baumannii is a major multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogen associated with high morbidity and mortality, driven not only by antibiotic resistance but also by its ability to persist intracellularly and disrupt host immune homeostasis. Host-directed antimicrobial strategies that combine bactericidal activity with immune modulation are therefore urgently needed. Caerin peptides 1.1 (F1) and 1.9 (F3), derived from Australian tree frogs, have demonstrated broad antimicrobial activity, but their combined antibacterial and immunomodulatory mechanisms remain incompletely under

Mapping Psychosocial Determinants for Cancer Onset: An Umbrella Review.

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing body of literature suggesting that psychosocial factors contribute to cancer susceptibility, the existing evidence remains heterogeneous, and it is unclear which domains show the most consistent associations. Systematically mapping this literature helps inform the integration of psychosocial factors into cancer risk assessment and management frameworks, alongside behavioural risk factors. METHODS: To synthesise existing evidence on psychosocial factors associated with cancer onset, we conducted an umbrella review within the EU-funded iBeChange project (ID:10113

Identifying training needs of healthcare providers to implement caries risk assessment.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries remains a pressing concern among Indigenous children in Canada, driven by systemic inequities, limited access to care, and fragmented service delivery. Integrating caries risk assessment (CRA) into primary care presents an opportunity to improve early detection and prevention. This study explored the training needs and preferred delivery methods of non-dental primary care providers (NDPCPs) to support CRA implementation in Indigenous pediatric settings. METHODS: This qualitative exploratory study involved 50 NDPCPs serving First Nations and Métis children un

Endothelial Protein Changes Indicative of Endometriosis in Unexplained Infertility, an Exploratory Study.

Previous research has linked both endothelial protein changes and vitamin D with infertility. This study was undertaken to investigate the association of proteins associated with endothelial function and vitamin D status in the luteal phase at day 21 in a group of non-obese women prior to in vitro fertilization (IVF) with either unexplained infertility (UI) or male factor infertility (MFI). Twenty-five non-obese Caucasian women from a UK academic center with MFI (n = 14) and UI (n = 11) were recruited. Blood was withdrawn at day 21 of the menstrual cycle at the time of mock embryo transfer. Vi

Unveiling Therapeutic Potential of Yoga Mitigating Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial Dysfunction in PCOS: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Hormonal imbalance, mitochondrial dysfunctions, and oxidative stress (OS) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and its associated clinical features. A sedentary lifestyle, exposure to air pollutants, prenatal exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, processed and nutritionally depleted food, rich in trans fats, salts, and sugars, and high BMI specifically in visceral adiposity induce OS. OS damages the mitochondrial DNA, lipids, and proteins that impair mitochondrial function. Sequentially, dysfunctional mitochondria produce more reactiv

Cerebrovascular Blood Flow Design and Regulation; Vulnerability in Aging Brain.

Nutrient delivery to the brain presents a unique challenge because the tissue functions as a computer system with in the order of 200,000 neurons/mm3. Penetrating arterioles bud from surface arteries of the brain and penetrate downward through the cortex. Capillary networks spread from penetrating arterioles through the surrounding tissue. Each penetrating arteriole forms a vascular unit, with little sharing of flow among vascular units (collateral flow). Unlike cells in other tissues, neurons have to be operationally isolated, interacting with other neurons through specific electrical connect

Osteoarthritis-related nociceptive behaviour following mechanical joint loading correlates with cartilage damage.

OBJECTIVE: In osteoarthritis (OA), the pain-structure relationship remains complex and poorly understood. Here, we used the mechanical joint loading (MJL) model of OA to investigate both knee pathology and nociceptive behaviour. DESIGN: MJL was used to induce OA in the right knees of 12-week-old male C57BL/6 mice (40 cycles, 9N, 3x/week for 2 weeks). Mechanical sensitivity thresholds and weight-bearing ratios were measured before loading and at weeks one, three and six post-loading. At these time points, separate groups of loaded and non-loaded mice (n = 12/group) were sacrificed, joints coll

Exposure to climate-related stressors undermines mental health in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Climate-related events such as droughts, extreme heat, and flooding intensify pressures on psychological well-being, particularly in vulnerable, low-resource, and conflict-affected settings. Iraq ranks as the world's fifth most climate-vulnerable country, and the Kurdistan Region has been increasingly affected by frequent and intense extreme weather events that threaten livelihoods and community stability. Despite rising exposure, the mental health impacts of climate change in the Kurdistan Region remain largely understudied. This study investigates the effects of climate change-

In-silico analysis of Bifidobacterium bifidum strain 900791 genome in the context of the B. bifidum pangenome.

INTRODUCTION: Bifidobacterium bifidum is a key member of the human gut microbiota with well-recognised roles in intestinal homeostasis, glycan metabolism, and immunomodulation. Strain 900791, isolated from the meconium of a Siberian infant, has been used as a commercial probiotic ingredient for decades and has demonstrated, in previously published clinical trials, an ability to improve lactose tolerance and reduce gastrointestinal symptoms in both children and adults; however, the genomic basis for these properties has not been characterised. METHODS: We present the complete genome sequence a

Conserved intracellular virulence architecture and focal genomic diversification in sub-Saharan African Brucella melitensis.

UNLABELLED: Brucella melitensis has a highly conserved genome, but the distribution of core-genome, gene-content, virulence-associated, mobile-element-associated, and antimicrobial-resistance-relevant variation among available sub-Saharan African genomes has not been examined in an integrated regional analysis. We analyzed 51 curated B. melitensis genomes from human and animal hosts using core-genome phylogenomics, pangenome reconstruction, virulence profiling, mobile genetic element (MGE) analysis, and mutation-based screening of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)-associated loci. A phylogeny rec

Integrative single-cell and spatial transcriptomic analyses identify LMX1B as a tumor suppressor orchestrating the GDF15-ATP4B axis in renal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is characterized by profound inter- and intratumoral heterogeneity and extensive tumor microenvironment (TME) remodeling, yet the spatially resolved cellular programs and intercellular communication networks orchestrating malignant progression remain poorly defined. LMX1B, a LIM homeodomain transcription factor essential for kidney morphogenesis, has not been previously investigated in renal carcinogenesis. METHODS: We integrated single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and spatial transcriptomics (ST) across three independent RCC cohorts, complemented by

Ferroptosis-related SOCS1 as a candidate host-response biomarker in tuberculosis: An integrated transcriptomic and clinical validation study.

Suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1) has been implicated in immune regulation and has been identified as a ferroptosis-related candidate gene in tuberculosis (TB) transcriptomic studies. However, its expression characteristics in independent clinical samples and its relationship with disease activity-related indicators remain insufficiently defined. This study integrated public transcriptomic datasets with clinical validation to evaluate SOCS1 expression in TB, assess its potential adjunctive diagnostic value, and explore its clinical associations. Public datasets from the Gene Expressio

Genomic evolution of enteric pathogens: mechanisms of pathogenicity and diagnostic innovations.

Genomic evolution serves as a pivotal driver of pathogenicity and host adaptation in intestinal pathogens. This review systematically dissects, from a phylogenetic perspective, the key genomic evolutionary mechanisms underpinning pathogenesis across five major classes of intestinal pathogens and their significance. Bacteria (e.g., Escherichia coli) acquire virulence- and antibiotic resistance-enhancing genes via horizontal gene transfer and genomic recombination, equipping them to disrupt the intestinal mucosal barrier and evade host immune defenses. Fungi (e.g., Candida albicans and Cryptococ
