OBJECTIVE: To describe the extent and nature of developmental delay at different stages in childhood in a community in South Africa, with a known high rate of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
METHOD: cohort of infants, clinically examined for FASD at two time periods, 7-12 months (N= 392; 45 FASD) and 17-21 months of age (N = 83, 35 FASD) were assessed using the Griffiths Mental Developmental Scales (GMDS).
RESULTS: Infants and children with FASD perform worse than their Non-FASD counterparts over all scales and total developmental quotients. Mean quotients for both groups decline bet

Rett syndrome (RTT) is one of the most prevalent female neurodevelopmental disorders that cause severe mental retardation. Mutations in methyl CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) are mainly responsible for RTT. Patients with classical RTT exhibit normal development until age 6-18 mo, at which point they become symptomatic and display loss of language and motor skills, purposeful hand movements, and normal head growth. Murine genetic models and postmortem human brains have been used to study the disease and enable the molecular dissection of RTT. In this work, we applied a recently developed reprogra

BACKGROUND: Difficulty modeling complex behavioral phenotypes in rodents (e.g., language) has hindered pathophysiological investigation and treatment development for autism spectrum disorders. Recent human neuroimaging studies, however, have identified functional biomarkers that can be more directly related to the abnormal neural dynamics of autism spectrum disorders. This study assessed the translational potential of auditory evoked-response endophenotypes of autism in parallel mouse and human studies of autism.
METHODS: Whole-cortex magnetoencephalography was recorded in 17 typically develo

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the neurodevelopmental outcome of children with prenatally diagnosed head circumference greater than 2 SD above the mean for gestational age and no associated anomalies detected by ultrasound.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 17 fetuses, diagnosed in the third trimester by ultrasound as having isolated macrocephaly, defined as head circumference greater than 2 SD above the mean for gestational age. We evaluated their performance on a standardized neuropsychological battery at age 2-7 years, and compared them with 17 normocephalic children.
RESULTS: The range

INTRODUCTION: Learning disabilities constitute a heterogeneous group of disorders that involve significant alterations in different cognitive domains (acquisition and use of language, reasoning, mathematical skills, visuospatial abilities, and so forth) that are not accounted for by a low level of intelligence, inadequate sociocultural development or lack of academic opportunities. They result from an alteration in basic psychological processes, developmentally linked to an alteration in the central nervous system. Current functional neuroimaging techniques have made it possible to develop a n

BACKGROUND: Deficits in joint attention are considered by many researchers to be an early predictor of childhood autism (e.g., Osterling & Dawson, 1994) and are considered to be pivotal to deficits in language, play, and social development in this population (Mundy, 1995). Although many researchers have noted the importance of joint attention deficits in the development of children with autism (e.g., Mundy, Sigman, & Kasari, 1994) and have called for intervention strategies (e.g., Mundy & Crowson, 1997), few studies have attempted to target joint attention. In this study, joint attention behav

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) before birth can adversely affect children's neurodevelopment. The most common form of prenatal exposure is maternal fish consumption, but whether such exposure harms the fetus is unknown. We aimed to identify adverse neurodevelopmental effects in a fish-consuming population.
METHODS: We investigated 779 mother-infant pairs residing in the Republic of Seychelles. Mothers reported consuming fish on average 12 meals per week. Fish in Seychelles contain much the same concentrations of MeHg as commercial ocean fish elsewhere. Prenatal MeHg exposure w

A literature review was conducted to summarize current understanding of the effects of severe chronic renal failure (CRF), when present from infancy, on neurologic development. Data were obtained from the results of 95 examinations performed in 85 patients, most of whom had been studied after 12 months of age, or following initiation of maintenance dialysis or successful transplantation. CRF was diagnosed at birth or during the neonatal period in 71.7% of these patients; serum creatinine concentrations or calculated clearances were greater than or equal to 2.0 mg/dl (177 mumol/l) or less than

The erect posture of man is not due to a static rigidity of the vertebral column, but to an extremely dynamic function of the whole locomotor system of the trunk, especially the multiple biomechanical and functional possibilities of the vertebral column. Vertebrae intervertebral disks, ligaments (vertebral motor segment; Junghanns, 1966), back muscles, and the adjacent organ systems have to be considered as a functional unit. The erect posture is one of the most decisive acquisitions in the phylogenetic development of man. The vertebral column starts its adaption to this condition already duri

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Mental state verbs (MSVs) describe people's internal states and processes. Reports on the use of MSVs in school-age children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are contradictory, and little is known about the developmental trajectories of these verbs in this population during early childhood. In contrast, among young, typically developing (TD) children, research has shown that the use of desire, perception, and physiological verbs precedes the use of cognitive and emotion verbs. This study aimed to describe the development of MSV use among autistic children as compared to T

This paper presents the development of a robotic system for the rehabilitation and quality of life improvement of children with cerebral palsy (CP). The system consists of four modules and is based on a virtual humanoid robot that is meant to motivate and encourage children in their rehabilitation programs. The efficiency of the developed system was tested on two children with CP. The effect of using the robot is an increase in the number of exercise repetitions, as well as the time spent on therapy, developing and strengthening the child's musculature. Additionally, the children are able to p

A crosslinguistic study is underway concerning children's protracted phonological development (i.e. speech sound disorders). The current article reports pilot Spanish data for this study from two 4-year-old boys with protracted phonological development. The purposes of the pilot study were to: (1) develop and evaluate a word list for elicitation that could be used across Spanish dialects and that sufficiently sampled Spanish word lengths, stress patterns, word shapes and phonemes; and (2) to derive hypotheses for the larger study, based on patterns found in these children's speech, and a revie

BACKGROUND: Weight bias, often known as fat phobia or weight stigma, refers to unfavorable attitudes and stereotypes that are associated with, and applied to, larger bodies. Fat phobia can include an unreasonable and abnormal dread of being overweight or being associated with obese people. Currently, there is no validated tool available to measure fat phobia in Arabic. Measuring fat phobia in Arabic-speaking populations is crucial, because cultural attitudes toward body weight can be quite negative and discriminatory; these negative attitudes can negatively impact mental health. The current st

BACKGROUND: As artificial intelligence (AI) permeates the current society, the young generation is becoming increasingly accustomed to using digital solutions. AI-based medication counseling services may help people take medications more accurately and reduce adverse events. However, it is not known which AI-based medication counseling service will be preferred by young people.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess young people's preferences for AI-based medication counseling services.
METHODS: A discrete choice experiment (DCE) approach was the main analysis method applied in this study, inv

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Lumbar foraminal stenosis (LFS) is a common spinal condition that requires accurate assessment. Current magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reporting processes are often inefficient, and while deep learning has potential for improvement, challenges in generalization and interpretability limit its diagnostic effectiveness compared to physician expertise.
PURPOSE: The present study aimed to leverage a multimodal large language model to improve the accuracy and efficiency of LFS image classification, thereby enabling rapid and precise automated diagnosis, reducing the dependence

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a psychotherapeutic model that focuses on developing psychological flexibility by encouraging patients to attune to their present moment experience, cultivate openness to those experiences, and respond to those experiences with committed action that is rooted in their values. By combining the six core processes of ACT (attention to the present moment, self-as-context, defusion, acceptance, values, and committed action) with serious illness communication skills, palliative care clinicians can nurture psychological flexibility for patients facing uncert

The Interdisciplinary Orofacial Examination Protocol for Children and Adolescents (Protocolo de exploración interdisciplinaria orofacial para niños y adolescents, Barcelona, 2008) is very useful in providing a fast, initial, expedient detection of possible morphological and functional disorders, and to guide the patient toward the appropriate professionals. With this tool it is possible to detect the risk factors which can negatively affect morphological and functional harmony and guide patients toward the necessary treatment as early as possible. This Protocol, developed by 4 orthodontists, 1
