Preschool developmental concerns and adjustment in the early school years: Evidence from a Scottish birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Preschool language and behavioural difficulties impact on multiple domains of the child's early life and can endure into adulthood, predicting poor educational, social, and health outcomes. Highlighting risk factors associated with poor outcomes following language and behavioural difficulties raised in early childhood may facilitate early identification and intervention. METHODS: Data from the Growing Up in Scotland national birth cohort study were used. Language and behavioural difficulties were assessed at age 4 years using parent-reported language concerns and the Strengths and

Rapid detection of generalized anxiety disorder and major depression in epilepsy: Validation of the GAD-7 as a complementary tool to the NDDI-E in a French sample.

OBJECTIVE: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in people with epilepsy (PWE) is underdiagnosed and undertreated. The GAD-7 is a screening questionnaire to detect GAD. However, the usefulness of the GAD-7 as a screening tool in PWE remains to be validated. Thus, we aimed to: (1) validate the GAD-7 in French PWE and (2) assess its complementarity with regard to the previously validated screening tool for depression, the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDI-E). METHODS: This study was performed under the auspices of the ILAE Commission on Neuropsychiatry. People with epi

Neural Basis of Acquired Amusia and Its Recovery after Stroke.

UNLABELLED: Although acquired amusia is a relatively common disorder after stroke, its precise neuroanatomical basis is still unknown. To evaluate which brain regions form the neural substrate for acquired amusia and its recovery, we performed a voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) and morphometry (VBM) study with 77 human stroke subjects. Structural MRIs were acquired at acute and 6 month poststroke stages. Amusia and aphasia were behaviorally assessed at acute and 3 month poststroke stages using the Scale and Rhythm subtests of the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia (MBEA) and lan

Expanded newborn screening by mass spectrometry: New tests, future perspectives.

Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) has become a leading technology used in clinical chemistry and has shown to be particularly sensitive and specific when used in newborn screening (NBS) tests. The success of tandem mass spectrometry is due to important advances in hardware, software and clinical applications during the last 25 years. MS/MS permits a very rapid measurement of many metabolites in different biological specimens by using filter paper spots or directly on biological fluids. Its use in NBS give us the chance to identify possible treatable metabolic disorders even when asymptomatic an

[Validity assessment of a low level phonological processing test material in preschool children].

BACKGROUND: The BISC (Bielefelder Screening) is a German test to evaluate phonological skills believed to be a prerequisite for future reading and writing skills. BISC results may indicate an elevated risk for dyslexia. Our research group has put forward test material in order to specifically examine low-level phonological processing LLPP. In this study we analysed whether BISC and low-level phonological processing correlate. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective correlation analysis was carried out on primary school children's test results of the BISC and the newly developed low-level phonol

Visual naming performance after ATL resection: impact of atypical language dominance.

PURPOSE: To characterize the interaction between language dominance and lateralization of the epileptic focus for pre- and postoperative Boston Naming Test (BNT) performance in patients undergoing anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL). METHODS: Analysis of pre- and postoperative BNT scores depending on lateralization of language as measured by the intracarotid amobarbital procedure (IAP) versus lateralization of the temporal lobe epileptic focus. RESULTS: Changes between pre- and postoperative BNT performance depended on epilepsy lateralization (effect size=0.189) with significant decrease in pa

Recognition and language in low functioning autism.

The hypothesis that a pervasive impairment of declarative memory contributes to language impairment in low functioning autism (LFA) was tested. Participants with LFA, high functioning autism (HFA), intellectual disability (ID) without autism, and typical development (TD) were given two recognition tests and four tests of lexical understanding. It was predicted that recognition would be impaired in the LFA group relative to the HFA and TD groups but not the ID group, and that recognition would correlate with lexical knowledge in the LFA group but none of the other groups. These predictions were

Birth order effects on autism symptom domains.

Autism is predominantly genetically determined. Evidence supports familiality of the main sets of behavioral characteristics that define the syndrome of autism; however, possible non-genetic effects have also been suggested. The present study compared levels of autism symptom domains, as measured by the Autism Diagnostic Interview, and useful phrase speech scores between 106 pairs of first- and second-born siblings from multiply affected families. In addition, the intercorrelations between the measures were compared between siblings. The overall mean repetitive behavior total score was signifi

Social cognition in "pure" delusional disorder.

Introduction. Delusional disorders are characterised by monothematic, "encapsulated" and incorrigible false beliefs and misinterpretations of social signals. Due to the rarity of cases with "pure" delusional disorder (DD) in clinical settings most studies of social cognition in delusional patients have focused on patients with paranoid schizophrenia. In the present study we sought to examine emotion recognition, theory of mind abilities, and pragmatic language comprehension in patients with delusional disorder. Methods. Social cognition was assessed in 21 patients recruited over a 3-year perio

Further delineation of the 22q13 deletion syndrome.

A chromosomal deletion syndrome associated with a 22q13 microdeletion has previously been reported in approximately 75 children. We report six cases from Denmark with a deletion of 22q13. One was cytogenetically visible by conventional karyotyping, one was diagnosed by high resolution karyotyping after the demonstration of low arylsulfatase A activity. Two were diagnosed by high resolution CGH analysis, one was diagnosed by multisubtelomeric FISH analysis and one was diagnosed serendipitously as lack of the control signal in a FISH analysis for 22q11 deletion. One of the cases was a mosaic wit

Effects of phonemic awareness instruction on the encoding skills of children with severe speech impairment.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of phoneme-grapheme correspondence and phonemic awareness instruction on the encoding abilities of three pre-reading children with severe speech impairment (SSI). METHOD: Using a single subject multiple baseline design across behaviours and participants, children received phoneme-grapheme awareness instruction followed by instruction in segmenting, manipulating, and encoding consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) pseudowords. RESULTS: Generalization occurred to encoding of novel CVC pseudo- and real words for two of the three participants. CONCLUSIONS: Results sugge

Variable presentation of cerebrovascular disease in monovular twins.

We describe twin girls with bilateral cerebrovascular disease. In one child, a diagnosis of moyamoya disease was made after presentation in infancy with an acute hemiparesis; her asymptomatic sibling was found to have significant bilateral cerebrovascular disease after neuropsychological evaluation and assessment with transcranial Doppler ultrasound. Both subjects showed a discrepancy between verbal and performance IQ and deficits on a test of frontal-lobe function suggesting that these domains should be targeted in cognitive assessment. Family members of subjects with moyamoya are at risk of

Effect of very low birth weight and subnormal head size on cognitive abilities at school age.

BACKGROUND: We tested the hypothesis that very-low-birth-weight (less than 1.5 kg) infants with perinatal growth failure whose head size is not normal by eight months of age (corrected for prematurity) have significantly poorer growth and neurocognitive abilities at school age than very-low-birth-weight children with a normal head size at eight months. We also hypothesized that these differences would persist even after control for major neurologic impairment and perinatal and sociodemographic risk factors. METHODS: We have followed a cohort of very-low-birth-weight children since their birth

Is Angelman syndrome an alternate result of del(15)(q11q13)?

Two unrelated females, age 15 and 5 years respectively, were studied cytogenetically because of severe mental retardation, seizures and ataxia-like incoordination. A similar deletion of the proximal long arm of chromosome 15 was found in both patients. Re-evaluation showed no voracious appetite or obesity; normal size of hands and feet, minimal to no hypotonia by history or examination and facial features not typical of the Prader-Willi syndrome. However, the facial appearance of the girls was similar to each other with mild hypertelorism. The similarity of these girls and dissimilarity to Pra

[The primary care paediatrician in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. An approach involving a population study].

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing demand for diagnoses of children with learning problems and/or behavioural disorders in visits to paediatric and neuropaediatric units. One of the most frequent causes of this situation is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which has a high rate of incidence and is difficult to diagnose. The role of the Primary Care paediatrician in its screening and intervention is considered. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A population study was conducted in children between 6 and 12 years of age who attend schools in the Navarrese towns of Buñuel and Cortes. Conners te

Preschool language outcomes of children with history of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and very low birth weight.

A prospective follow-up of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants with and without bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and term control infants was conducted. The effects of BPD and VLBW on speech-language development and specific language impairment at 3 years of age were investigated, controlling for the effects of sociodemographic and other medical risk factors. Groups were compared on cognitive and speech-language outcomes using the Battelle Language and Bayley Mental Scales of Infant Development. Children with a history of BPD had lower receptive language skills than VLBW children without BPD,
