Dietary components significantly impact human health, influencing diverse physiological processes from metabolic homeostasis to cognitive function and aging. Tea, a widely consumed functional beverage rich in antioxidants, has gained attention for its health benefits. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the most abundant and bioactive catechin in green tea, is renowned for its potent biological activities. However, the direct absorption of EGCG is limited due to its low oral bioavailability, with a substantial portion reaching the colon where it interacts extensively with gut microbiota. This mic

This study evaluated the effects of calcium butyrate (CB) and bacitracin methylene disalicylate 50 (BMD) combined with different phytase concentrations on broiler intestinal health and physiology. Day-old YPM x Ross 708 male broilers (2,880) were distributed in 72 floor pens and assigned to 1 of 9 treatments (8 replicates/treatment). This experiment was a factorial arrangement including 2 phytase concentrations (500 or 1,500 FTU/kg) and 4 microbiota modulating feed additive levels (MMFA; (1) none, (2) only CB (0.5 g/kg of diet), (3) only BMD (55 mg/kg of diet), or (4) both CB and BMD). The role of the oral microbiota in the overall health and in systemic diseases has gained more importance in the recent years, mainly due to the systemic effects that are mediated by the chronic inflammation caused by oral diseases, such as periodontitis, through the microbial communities of the mouth. The chronic infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) interacts at the tissue level (e.g. gut, genital tract, brain) to create reservoirs; the modulation of the gut microbiota by HIV infection is a good example of these interactions. The purpose of the present review is to assess the s

Medical modulation of sex hormone levels is a cornerstone of treatment for many conditions that impact well-being, including cancer, fertility/infertility, gender dysphoria, and chronic metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity. The microbial residents of the intestine, known as the microbiota, interact with sex hormones in the intestine, and there is correlative evidence that this interaction is bidirectional. Based on these published findings, we hypothesized that transgender individuals receiving exogenous testosterone as part of their gender-affirming medical treatment might undergo

The excessive application of antibiotics and surfactants resulted in their massive accumulation in waste activated sludge (WAS), but the co-occurrent impacts of antibiotics and surfactants on the antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) fates have seldom reported. This work mainly revealed the roles and critical mechanisms of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) on the sulfadiazine (SDZ) stressing for ARGs distribution during WAS anaerobic fermentation. High-throughput qPCR and metagenomic analysis revealed that SDBS aggravated the SDZ selective pressure, and accelerated the proliferation of ARGs.

Medical psychiatry acquires more prominence in the biological field by new anatomical insights into the wrappings of the brain: meninges, but also Meningo-Calvarial Channels (MCCs) connecting the former with the bone marrows' also neuronally steered, functions. The skull-bone's meningeal arteries through migrating and orchestrating mast cells within a framework stressing their relations with arteries (Treviranus 2012-21) could explain enigmatic phenomena like migrainous and post-injury Cortical Spreading Depressions (CSD) or the Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome (RCVS) escalating t

The impact of the host microbiota on arbovirus infections is currently not well understood. Arboviruses are viruses transmitted through the bites of infected arthropods, predominantly mosquitoes or ticks. The first site of arbovirus inoculation is the biting site in the host skin, which is colonized by a complex microbial community that could possibly influence arbovirus infection. We demonstrated that preincubation of arboviruses with certain components of the bacterial cell wall, including lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of some Gram-negative bacteria and lipoteichoic acids or peptidoglycan of cer

Increasing evidence suggests that microorganisms might represent at least highly interesting cofactors in colorectal cancer (CRC) oncogenesis and progression. Still, associated mechanisms, specifically in colonocytes and their microenvironmental interactions, are still poorly understood. Although, currently, at least seven viruses are being recognized as human carcinogens, only three of these - Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human papillomavirus (HPV) and John Cunningham virus (JCV) - have been described, with varying levels of evidence, in CRC. In addition, cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been associate

In anoxic groundwater aquifers, the long-term survival of Dehalococcoides mccartyi populations expressing the gene vcrA (or bvcA) encoding reductive vinyl chloride dehalogenases are important to achieve complete dechlorination of tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) to nonchlorinated ethene. The absence or inactivity of vcrA-containing Dehalococcoides results in the accumulation of the harmful chlorinated intermediates dichloroethene (DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC). Although vcrA-containing Dehalococcoides subpopulations depend on synergistic interaction with other organohalide-resp

Microbial pathogens acquire the immediate imperative to avoid or counteract the formidable defense of innate immunity as soon as they overcome the initial physical barriers of the host. Many have adopted the strategy of directly disrupting the complement system through the capture of its components, using proteins on the pathogen's surface. In leptospirosis, pathogenic Leptospira spp. are resistant to complement-mediated killing, in contrast to the highly vulnerable non-pathogenic strains. Pathogenic L. interrogans uses LenA/LfhA and LcpA to respectively sequester and commandeer the function o

BACKGROUND: The midgut of hematophagous insects, such as disease transmitting mosquitoes, carries out a variety of essential functions that mostly relate to blood feeding. The midgut of the female malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae is a major site of interactions between the parasite and the vector. Distinct compartments and cell types of the midgut tissue carry out specific functions and vector borne pathogens interact and infect different parts of the midgut.
RESULTS: A microarray based global gene expression approach was used to compare transcript abundance in the four major female

Interleukin (IL)-12 is expressed mainly in antigen-presenting cells after challenge with microbial material or after CD40 activation. Although IL-12 was cloned from human Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed B cell lines, surprisingly, CD40 ligation on murine B cells did not lead to IL-12 production, suggesting that murine B cells do not produce IL-12. Here we demonstrate that a subset of human tonsillar B cells can be induced to express and secrete bioactive IL-12. The major stimulus to produce IL-12 in human B cells was CD40 ligation. In contrast, B cell receptor cross-linking did not induce

Antigenic variation is a common microbial survival strategy, powered by diversity in expressed surface antigens across the pathogen population over the course of infection. Even so, among pathogens, African trypanosomes have the most comprehensive system of antigenic variation described. African trypanosomes (Trypanosoma brucei spp.) are unicellular parasites native to sub-Saharan Africa, and the causative agents of sleeping sickness in humans and of n'agana in livestock. They cycle between two habitats: a specific species of fly (Glossina spp. or, colloquially, the tsetse) and the bloodstream

UNLABELLED: Prokaryotes can acquire antivirus immunity via two fundamentally distinct types of processes: direct interaction with the virus, as in clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-Cas adaptive immunity systems, and horizontal gene transfer (HGT), which is the main route of transmission of innate immunity systems. These routes of defense evolution are not mutually exclusive and can operate concomitantly, but observations suggest that at least in some bacterial and archaeal species, one or the other route dominates the defense landscape. We hypothesized that the

PURPOSE: The isolation of yeast species other than Candida albicans from the oral mucosa has been increasing in frequency, suggesting that those may constitute emerging potential oral colonizers. The purpose of this work was to determine whether yeast species other than C. albicans are associated with factors related to wearing of dental prostheses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: tRNA-PCR fingerprinting and sequencing of the 26S rDNA D1/D2 domain were used to identify all yeasts isolated from CHROMagar™ Candida cultures of oral swabs collected from 178 patients.
RESULTS: Besides C. albicans, 13 othe

Medication, particularly antibiotics, significantly alters gut microbiome composition, often reducing microbial diversity and affecting host health. Given that the gut microbiome may influence cancer progression, we integrated clinical, shotgun metagenomic, and medication data to assess microbiome composition across diseased and healthy cohorts, as well as the impact of medication on microbiome variation. The study cohorts included patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL, n = 85), acute myeloid leukemia (AML, n = 61), myeloid dysplastic syndrome (MDS), and other severe hematological ma

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a gynaecological hormone-dependent disorder that is defined by histological lesions generated by the growth of endometrial-like tissue out of the uterus cavity, most commonly engrafted within the peritoneal cavity, although these lesions can also be located in distant organs. Endometriosis affects ~10% of women of reproductive age, frequently producing severe and, sometimes, incapacitating symptoms, including chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea and dyspareunia, among others. Furthermore, endometriosis causes infertility in ~30% of affected women. Despite intense rese

The past decade of basic research in periodontology has driven radical changes in our understanding and perceptions of the pathogenic processes that drive periodontal tissue destruction. The core elements of the classical model of disease pathogenesis, developed by Page & Kornman in 1997, remain pertinent today; however, our understanding of the dynamic interactions between the various microbial and host factors has changed significantly. The molecular era has unraveled aspects of genetics, epigenetics, lifestyle and environmental factors that, in combination, influence biofilm composition and

The neonatal intestinal microbiota is a complex ecosystem composed of numerous genera, species and strains of bacteria. This enormous cell mass performs a variety of unique activities that affect both the colonic and systemic physiology. Its primary activities include nutritive, metabolic, immunological and protective functions. Most studies of infants have been based on faecal samples using the classical plating techniques with culturing on specific media. The limitations of these methods must be taken into account when evaluating the varying results of the different studies. The establishmen
