Examining factors associated with poor metered-dose inhaler technique in a cohort of bronx patients with uncontrolled asthma.

OBJECTIVE: Most studies investigating at-risk groups for poor inhaler technique (PT) have been in adolescents. However, evidence suggests older age correlates with PT. This study aimed to correlate patient characteristics with PT in an adult asthma cohort in the Bronx. METHODS: We categorized 237 patients with uncontrolled asthma by demonstration of good inhaler technique (GT) (n = 112) or PT (n = 58) at their initial visit. Independent variables included age, sex, ethnicity, language, insurance status, BMI, depression severity, and socioeconomic data. Two logistic regression models were crea

Association between triglyceride glucose-body mass index and depression among US adults: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: The triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI) is a well-established surrogate marker for insulin resistance. While an association between insulin resistance and depression has been identified, that between TyG-BMI and depression remains unclear. Therefore, we used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database to investigate this. STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study included 9673 adults (aged ≥20 years) from the NHANES in the United States from 2011 to 2020. METHODS: Depressive symptoms were assessed using a nine-item version of the Pat

Resilience, sleep quality and sleepiness in Peruvian medical students: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Resilience can mitigate the negative impact produced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Medical students endure significant academic stress, so adjusting to sudden changes can present greater mental health challenges. The aim is to identify the level and prevalence of resilience and to know what are the educational variables and is sleep quality associated with resilience. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online questionnaire. The survey was elaborated in Google Forms and shared through social networks. The outcome was resilience, measured with the Connor Davidson Re

Exploring the Interplay between Mitochondrial DNA and Lifestyle Factors in the Pathogenesis of Psychiatric Disorders.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the interaction of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and lifestyle factors in the development of psychiatric disorders and to gain greater insight into their pathogenesis and comorbidity. We analyzed data from approximately 150,000 individuals from the UK Biobank. Mitochondrial gene-by-environment interaction studies (mtGEIS) were performed to assess the relationships between mtDNA and psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and self-harm. These disorders were defined using diagnostic and severity indicators derived from the General Anxiety

Adherence to and predictors of iron-folate acid supplementation among pregnant women in a pastoral population in Ghana: a community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Iron-Folate Acid Supplementation (IFAS) interventions have been recognized globally as key in reducing the burden of anemia among pregnant women. However, adherence to and determinants of IFAS remain indistinct, as it is the main constraint with supplementation therapy, particularly among minority populations. Hence, this study sought to determine the adherence to and predictors of IFAS among nomadic Fulani pregnant women in the West Gonja Municipality of Ghana. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional design was employed to involve 130 respondents between February to July, 2022

Trends in the long-term impact of childhood visual impairment on health and social outcomes in the UK: a cross-cohort study across three decades of disability-related legislation and policy implementation.

BACKGROUND: Childhood vision impairment (VI) can adversely impact health and social outcomes and limit life chances. We investigated whether its adverse impacts into adult life changed during a period in which legislation, policy and services to address inequalities relating to disability were implemented. METHODS: Cross-cohort study comprising 14 247 participants from the 1946, 1958 and 1970 British birth cohorts (BC). Participants dichotomized as VI at age 15/16 (distance visual acuity was 6/12 or worse in the better-seeing eye) or normally sighted. Associations of childhood VI with health,

Associations between Low-Carbohydrate Diets and Low-Fat Diets with Frailty in Community-Dwelling Aging Chinese Adults.

Frailty is a major health issue associated with aging. Diet affects frailty status; however, studies on the associations between the low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) score, low-fat diet (LFD) score and frailty in older Chinese adults are scarce. This study aimed to examine the associations between the LCD score, LFD score and risk of frailty in older Chinese adults. We analyzed data from 6414 participants aged ≥ 60 years from the China Northwest Natural Population Cohort: Ningxia Project. Frailty was measured using the frailty index (FI), calculated from 28 items comprising diseases, behavioral dis

Development and internal validation of a multifactorial risk prediction model for gallbladder cancer in a high-incidence country.

Since 2006, Chile has been implementing a gallbladder cancer (GBC) prevention program based on prophylactic cholecystectomy for gallstone patients aged 35 to 49 years. The effectiveness of this prevention program has not yet been comprehensively evaluated. We conducted a retrospective study of 473 Chilean GBC patients and 2137 population-based controls to develop and internally validate three GBC risk prediction models. The Baseline Model accounted for gallstones while adjusting for sex and birth year. Enhanced Model I also included the non-genetic risk factors: body mass index, educational le

Social connection and gene regulation during the COVID-19 pandemic: Divergent patterns for online and in-person interaction.

BACKGROUND: Social connection has been linked to reduced disease risk and enhanced antiviral immunity, but it is unclear whether online social connections have similar effects to those previously documented for in-person/offline social relationships, or whether online connections can substitute for in-person social relations when the latter are restricted. We examined this question in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing specifically on an immune system gene regulation profile known as the conserved transcriptional response to adversity (CTRA), which is characterized by up-regulation

Overall and Gender-Specific Effects of Intermittent Preventive Treatment of Malaria with Artemisinin-Based Combination Therapies among Schoolchildren in Mali: A Three-Group Open Label Randomized Controlled Trial.

Intermittent preventive treatment of malaria among schoolchildren (IPTsc) reduces clinical malaria, asymptomatic parasitemia, and anemia. The effects of IPTsc by gender have not been studied longitudinally. We investigated overall IPTsc efficacy and conducted a secondary analysis to explore gender-specific differences. We enrolled schoolchildren aged 6-13 years in an open-label, rolling-cohort randomized controlled trial between September 2007 and February 2013 in Kolle, Mali. Annually, schoolchildren received two full-treatment courses of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) plus artesunate, or amo

Inequalities in mental health, self-rated health, and social support among sexual minority young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: analyses from the UK Millennium Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Young adults who self-identify as a sexual minority may have been particularly harmed by the consequences of lockdown, closure of educational institutions, and social distancing measures as they are likely to have been confined in households that may not be supportive of their sexual orientation. We examine inequalities in the mental health and self-rated health of sexual minority young adults, compared to their heterosexual peers, at the height of lockdown restrictions in the UK. METHODS: We analysed data from singletons who participated in waves 6, 7, and the wave 1 COVID-19 survey

The association between history of incarceration and heart disease: Adults from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth.

Heart disease affects over 30.3 million adults in the United States and is a leading cause of mortality, morbidity, and disability. However, little is known about the relationship between exposure to incarceration and chronic disease. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the relationship between prior incarceration and heart disease. This was a study of 12,686 adults from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) 1979 dataset. History of incarceration was the predictor and defined as any episode of incarceration in a correctional institution. The outcome, heart disease, was de

Biological monitoring and personal exposure to traffic-related air pollutants of elementary school-age children living in a metropolitan area.

An ever-growing burden of scientific evidence links air pollution to different aspects of human health even at very low concentrations; the impact increases for those living in urban environments, especially the youngest and the elderly. This study investigated the exposure to air pollution of urban school children of Milan, Italy, by personal and biological monitoring, in the frame of the MAPS-MI project. A total of 128 primary school children (7-11 years) were involved in a two-season monitoring campaign during spring 2018 and winter 2019. Personal exposure to airborne VOCs and eBC, and biol

Requiring help injecting among people who inject drugs in Toronto, Canada: Characterising the need to address sociodemographic disparities and substance-use specific patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Those requiring help injecting are at an elevated risk of injection-related injury and blood-borne infections and are thus a priority group for harm reduction programs. As supervised consumption services (SCS) are scaled-up across Canada, information on those who require help injecting is necessary to inform equitable service uptake. We characterised the sociodemographic, structural and drug use correlates of needing help injecting among a cohort of people who inject drugs in Toronto, Canada. METHODS: A cross-sectional baseline survey was administered between November 2018 and M

Heart failure associated with imported malaria: a nationwide Danish cohort study.

AIMS: Despite adequate treatment, recent studies have hypothesized that malaria may affect long-term cardiovascular function. We aimed to investigate the long-term risk of cardiovascular events and death in individuals with a history of imported malaria in Denmark. METHODS: Using nationwide Danish registries, we followed individuals with a history of malaria for the risk of incident heart failure (HF), myocardial infarction (MI), cardiovascular death and all-cause death (1 January 1994 to 1 January 2017). The population was age- and sex-matched with individuals without a history of malaria fr
