Pectoralis minor muscle elongation and scapulothoracic motion do not differ in individuals with short versus typical resting pectoralis minor muscle length: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with short resting pectoralis minor muscle length have been shown to have aberrant scapulothoracic motion when compared to individuals with long resting pectoralis minor muscle length. However, the degree to which the pectoralis minor muscle can be lengthened and whether or not scapulothoracic motion differs between individuals with short and typical resting pectoralis minor muscle length is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To determine if: (1) pectoralis minor muscle elongation (percent pectoralis minor muscle can be actively and passively lengthened beyond resting length), (2) p

Greater Hip Extension but Not Hip Abduction Explosive Strength Is Associated With Lesser Hip Adduction and Knee Valgus Motion During a Single-Leg Jump-Cut.

BACKGROUND: The relationships between hip abductor and extensor strength and frontal plane hip and knee motions that are associated with anterior cruciate ligament injury risk are equivocal. However, previous research on these relationships has evaluated relatively low-level movement tasks and peak torque rather than a time-critical strength measure such as the rate of torque development (RTD). HYPOTHESIS: Females with greater hip abduction and extension RTD would exhibit lesser frontal plane hip and knee motion during a single-leg jump-cutting task. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory stud

Range of motion, sacral screw and rod strain in long posterior spinal constructs: a biomechanical comparison between S2 alar iliac screws with traditional fixation strategies.

BACKGROUND: S1 screw failure and L5/S1 non-union are issues with long fusions to S1. Improved construct stiffness and S1 screw offloading can help avoid this. S2AI screws have shown to provide similar stiffness to iliac screws when added to L3-S1 constructs. We sought to examine and compare the biomechanical effects on an L2-S1 pedicle screw construct of adding S2AI screws, AxiaLIF, L5-S1 interbody support via transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), and to examine the effect of the addition of cross connectors to each of these constructs. METHODS: Two S1 screws and one rod with strain

Prognostic value of cardiac power output to left ventricular mass in patients with left ventricular dysfunction and dobutamine stress echo negative by wall motion criteria.

AIMS: Cardiac power output to left ventricular mass (power/mass) is an index of myocardial efficiency reflecting the rate at which cardiac work is delivered with respect to the potential energy stored in the left ventricular mass. In the present study, we sought to investigate the capability of power/mass assessed at peak of dobutamine stress echocardiography to predict mortality in patients with ischaemic cardiomyopathy and no inducible ischaemia. METHODS AND RESULTS: One-hundred eleven patients (95 males; age 68 ± 10 years) with 35 ± 7% mean left ventricular ejection fraction and a dobutami

Prognostic value of Doppler echocardiographic-derived coronary flow velocity reserve of left anterior descending artery in octogenarians with stress echocardiography negative for wall motion criteria.

AIMS: Doppler-derived coronary flow velocity reserve (CFVR) of left anterior descending (LAD) artery is an effective tool to predict overall mortality. The aim was to investigate the capability of CFVR to predict outcome in an unselected cohort of patients older than 80 years having stress echo negative by wall motion criteria. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study group refers to 369 patients aged > 80 years (156 men; mean age 83 ± 2 years) who had undergone dipyridamole stress echocardiography with CFVR assessment of LAD artery of known (n = 144) or suspected (n = 225) coronary artery disease. Preoperative morphological analysis by transesophageal echocardiography and predictive value of plasma landiolol concentration during systolic anterior motion mitral valve repair : a report of three cases.

We report three cases with systolic anterior motion (SAM) after mitral valve plasty. Preoperative mitral valve morphology is a risk factor for SAM. The morphological characteristics of SAM have been revealed in several studies. We found a small distance between coaptation and the interventricular septum in all cases, and cases 2, and 3 had a low AL/PL ratio, whereas case 3 had a large PML, which was revealed by transesophageal echocardiography. With the use of 3D transesophageal echocardiography, when mitral valve prolapse was investigated, in all three cases, it was easy to specify lesions. T

Effects on inadvertent endplate fracture following lateral cage placement on range of motion and indirect spine decompression in lumbar spine fusion constructs: A cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: The lateral transpsoas approach to interbody fusion is gaining popularity. Existing literature suggests that perioperative vertebra-related complications include endplate breach owing to aggressive enedplate preparation and poor bone quality. The acute effects of cage subsidence on stabilization and indirect decompression at the affected level are unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare the kinematics and radiographic metrics of indirect decompression in lumbar spines instrumented with laterally placed cages in the presence of inadvertent endplate fracture, which was dete

Moribund sperm in frozen-thawed semen, and sperm motion end points post-thaw and post-swim-up, are related to fertility in Holstein AI bulls.

The objectives were to compare testicular physical characteristics and post-thaw sperm characteristics and their associations with fertility in Holstein bulls used for AI. Ten Holstein bulls (4-5 y old) were classified as either high-fertility (HF) or low-fertility (LF; n = 5 each), based on adjusted 56-d non-return rates [non-return rate (NRR); range (mean ± SD): 55.6 ± 4.6 to 71.8 ± 1.3%). Testicular physical characteristics were not significantly different between the two groups. Four ejaculates were collected from each bull and cryopreserved. Role of radial strain and displacement imaging to quantify wall motion dyssynchrony in patients with left ventricular mechanical dyssynchrony and chronic right ventricular pressure overload.

Left ventricular (LV) deformation with ventricular septal shift is one of the most distinctive echocardiographic observations in patients with chronic right ventricular (RV) pressure overload (PO). However, little is known about the effects of RVPO on LV performance and regional synchrony. Accordingly, our objective was to test the hypothesis that chronic RVPO affects regional wall motion, synchronicity, and global LV function using a novel speckle-tracking approach to quantify and characterize regional LV wall motion dyssynchrony. Displacement and strain imaging echocardiographic studies were

Comparison of pediatric outcomes data collection instrument scores and range of motion before and after shoulder tendon transfers for children with brachial plexus birth palsy.

BACKGROUND: Children with brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP) may undergo shoulder external rotation tendon transfers (ERTT) to improve function. In terms of outcome measurements, and according to the World Health Organization International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health model, ERTT reduces impairment as measured by range of motion (ROM), but has not been shown to improve activity and participation. Furthermore, correlation between these outcome measures has not been established. The Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) is a well-validated musculoskeletal

Concerted motion of a protein-peptide complex: backbone dynamics studies of an (15)N-labeled peptide derived from P(21)-activated kinase bound to Cdc42Hs.GMPPCP.

Cdc42Hs is a member of the Ras superfamily of GTPases which, when active, initiates a cascade beginning with the activation of several kinases, including P(21)-activated kinase (PAK). We previously determined the structure of a complex between a 46 amino acid fragment peptide derived from the PAK binding domain (PBD46) and Cdc42Hs.GMPPCP (Gizachew, D., Guo, W., Chohan, K. K., Sutcliffe, M. J., and Oswald, R. E. (2000) Biochemistry 39, 3963-3971). Previous studies (Loh, A. P., Guo, W., Nicholson, L. K., and Oswald, R. E. (1999) Biochemistry 38, 12547-12557) suggest that the regions of Cdc42Hs t

From hip to ankle in the sagittal plane: evidence for generalized proprioceptive deficits in children with unilateral and bilateral spastic cerebral palsy through 3D motion analysis.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Proprioceptive deficits affect 46-82% of children with cerebral palsy (CPc), yet evidence largely derives from upper-limb studies while lower-limb deficits remain underexplored. Previous studies often assess a single joint and rarely account for age, limiting understanding of whether deficits are generalized across joints and sides or localized compared with typically developing children (TDc) and across CP subtypes. METHODS: Hip, knee, and ankle proprioception were assessed using passive-ipsilateral Joint-Position-Reproduction (JPR) in the sagittal plane in 32 CPc an

Communicating Change on Multi-item Patient-Reported Outcome Measures: What Were the Meaningful Changes in Physical Functioning Experienced by Patients on Vimseltinib in the MOTION Trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patients with tenosynovial giant cell tumor experience many impacts on their physical functioning associated with pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion. Clinical trials often use clinical outcome assessments to establish meaningful change in treatment; although, conceptualizing improvement on a multi-item measure can be challenging. The goal of this analysis was to explicitly characterize what the significant and meaningful improvements in physical functioning were among those who were considered physical functioning responders. METHODS: A mixed-method analysi
