Proliferative Fasciitis/Myositis Involving the Facial Muscles Including the Masseter Muscle: A Rare Cause of Trismus.

BACKGROUND Proliferative fasciitis/myositis is a benign disease that can be treated conservatively. However, some patients are mistakenly treated surgically because of a misdiagnosis of the condition as a malignant tumor. CASE REPORT A 50-year-old Japanese man developed swelling in his left cheek 12 days before admission; he developed a fever and trismus 3 days later. He was admitted to our hospital because of worsening of his condition despite treatment with sitafloxacin for 5 days and needle-aspiration drainage. On admission, he had a fever of 38.1°C, swelling in his left cheek spreading to

Mechanical muscle and tendon properties of the plantar flexors are altered even in highly functional children with spastic cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Recent ultrasound studies found increased passive muscle stiffness and no difference in tendon stiffness in highly impaired children and young adults with cerebral palsy. However, it is not known if muscle and tendon mechanical properties are already altered in highly functional children with cerebral palsy. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the mechanical and material properties of the plantar flexors in highly functional children with cerebral palsy and typically developing children. METHODS: Besides strength measurements, ultrasonography was used to assess gas

Undirected compensatory plasticity contributes to neuronal dysfunction after severe spinal cord injury.

Severe spinal cord injury in humans leads to a progressive neuronal dysfunction in the chronic stage of the injury. This dysfunction is characterized by premature exhaustion of muscle activity during assisted locomotion, which is associated with the emergence of abnormal reflex responses. Here, we hypothesize that undirected compensatory plasticity within neural systems caudal to a severe spinal cord injury contributes to the development of neuronal dysfunction in the chronic stage of the injury. We evaluated alterations in functional, electrophysiological and neuromorphological properties of

Modified high-sucrose diet-induced abdominally obese and normal-weight rats developed high plasma free fatty acid and insulin resistance.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolically obese but normal-weight (MONW) individuals have metabolic features of overt obesity, and abdominal adiposity is common in them. Animal models of MONW individuals are lacking. We aimed to develop an abdominally obese and normal-weight (AONW) rat model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Young male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed chow or a modified high-sucrose (HS) diet for 20 weeks. The HS diet induced increased visceral adipose tissue without increased body weight, reduced glucose disposal rates, and increased hepatic glucose output during the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, in

Modeling movement disorders--CRPS-related dystonia explained by abnormal proprioceptive reflexes.

Humans control their movements using adaptive proprioceptive feedback from muscle afferents. The interaction between proprioceptive reflexes and biomechanical properties of the limb is essential in understanding the etiology of movement disorders. A non-linear neuromuscular model of the wrist incorporating muscle dynamics and neural control was developed to test hypotheses on fixed dystonia. Dystonia entails sustained muscle contractions resulting in abnormal postures. Lack of inhibition is often hypothesized to result in hyperreflexia (exaggerated reflexes), which may cause fixed dystonia. In

Cervical motoneuron topography reflects the proximodistal organization of muscles and movements of the rat forelimb: a retrograde carbocyanine dye analysis.

Behavioral evidence reveals that the laboratory rat and other rodent species display skilled paw and digit use in handling food during eating and skilled limb use in reaching for food in formal laboratory skilled reaching tests that is comparable to that described in carnivores and primates. Because less is known about the central control of skilled movements in rodents than in carnivores or primates, the purpose of the current study was to examine the relation between the rat's spinal motoneurons and the individual forelimb muscles that they innervate. In two experiments, 14 forelimb muscles

The findings in paediatric obstetric brachial palsy differ from those in older patients: a suggested explanation.

An EMG and nerve-conduction-study protocol has been developed and used in all patients with brachial plexus lesions since 1985. The findings of EMG and nerve-conduction studies in obstetric brachial palsy (OBP) mostly suggest a falsely optimistic prognosis. To analyse this, all subjects were selected with complete avulsion of both roots C5 and C6 and/or complete rupture of the upper trunk verified during operation from a group of 162 infants with OBP (aged 4 to 14 months) and a group of 184 child and adult patients (aged 6 to 74 years) with a traumatic brachial plexus lesion. Fourteen infants,

[A case of Satoyoshi syndrome with symptoms resembling neuroleptic malignant syndrome].

Satoyoshi syndrome is a rare neurological disorder of unknown etiology characterized by progressive muscle spasms, alopecia, diarrhea and skeletal abnormalities. We here describe a 25-year-old man who developed symptoms similar to neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). He began to have the clinical characteristics of Satoyoshi syndrome at the age of 12 years. He was admitted to hospitals many times with painful muscle spasms and pyrexia in the early stage of the disease. He received steroid pulse therapy and oral prednisone at the age of 19, the extent and frequency of the spells being reduced

Electric muscle stimulation in the hind leg of the spontaneously hypertensive rat induces a long-lasting fall in blood pressure.

The influence of prolonged low-frequency, low-intensity electric stimulation of the gastrocnemius muscle or of the biceps femoris muscle on blood pressure and heart rate was investigated in unanaesthetized, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). In both groups, elevations of blood pressure and heart rate were elicited during the 60 min of muscle stimulation. After cessation of the stimulation, a depressor response developed within 60 min. Thirty to sixty minutes post-stimulation the fall in blood pressure was 19 +/- 3 and 17 +/- 4 mmHg, respectively (mean +/- SE) compared with controls. In bot

[Spasm of the adductor muscles, pre-dislocation and dislocations of the hip joints in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. Clinical observations on aetiology, pathogenesis, therapy and rehabilitation. Part I: The effect of open myotenotomy of the gracilis muscle and of the long and short adductor muscles in connection with total extrapelvine resection of the obturator nerve, on the hip joints and static function (author's transl)].

Spasm and contraction of the adductor muscles involve, on the one hand, danger in respect of the development of a dislocation of the hip, and are a serious impediment to a walking ability on the other. Hence, surgery is often necessary. The article reports on the results of consequent weakening of the adductor muscles as a result of open myotenotomy in association with complete extrapelvine resection of the obturator nerve. 27 patients were subjected to surgery--in most cases bilaterally--at an age between 2 years and 5 months and 18 years, with a follow-up period of up to 15 years. The study

Transferrin receptor 1 ablation in satellite cells impedes skeletal muscle regeneration through activation of ferroptosis.

BACKGROUND: Satellite cells (SCs) are critical to skeletal muscle regeneration. Inactivation of SCs is linked to skeletal muscle loss. Transferrin receptor 1 (Tfr1) is associated with muscular dysfunction as muscle-specific deletion of Tfr1 results in growth retardation, metabolic disorder, and lethality, shedding light on the importance of Tfr1 in muscle physiology. However, its physiological function regarding skeletal muscle ageing and regeneration remains unexplored. METHODS: RNA sequencing is applied to skeletal muscles of different ages to identify Tfr1 associated to skeletal muscle age

Permanent weakness and myopathy in hypokalemic periodic paralysis.

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoPP) is a rare disease that consists of attacks of flaccid paralysis that often occur at night or early in the morning. Some patients with HypoPP may develop permanent muscle weakness and permanent myopathy. Four phenotypes of disease have been described: 1) no symptoms; 2) periodic paralysis and absence of permanent weakness; 3) periodic paralysis and permanent paralysis; 4) permanent weakness and absence of periodic paralysis. Vacuolar alterations are present in the muscles of all patients affected by HypoPP. In general, vacuoles are heterogeneous in size a

The role of muscle synergies and task constraints on upper limb motor impairment after stroke.

This study explores the role of task constraints over muscle synergies expression in the context of upper limb motor impairment after stroke. We recruited nine chronic stroke survivors with upper limb impairments and fifteen healthy controls, who performed a series of tasks designed to evoke muscle synergies through various spatial explorations. These tasks included an isometric force task, a dynamic reaching task, the clinical Fugl-Meyer (FM) assessment, and a pinch task. Electromyographic data from 16 upper limb muscles were collected during each task, alongside intermuscular coherence (IMC)

Periostin Exon 17 Skipping Enhances the Efficacy of Local Adeno-Associated Viral-Microdystrophin Administration in a Fibrotic Model of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe, progressive genetic disorder primarily affecting boys, characterized by muscle degeneration due to mutations in the DMD gene encoding dystrophin, a crucial protein for muscle fiber integrity. The disease leads to significant muscle weakness and eventually to loss of ambulation. Adeno-associated viral (AAV)-microdystrophin (MD) gene therapy shows promise in preclinical and clinical settings. However, muscle fibrosis, a consequence of chronic inflammation and extracellular matrix remodeling, exacerbates disease progression and may hinder therapeutic

Sex-specific response of intramuscular fat to diet-induced obesity in rats.

Metabolic abnormalities associated with excess adiposity in obesity contribute to many noncommunicable diseases, including sarcopenic obesity. Sarcopenic obesity is the loss of muscle mass coupled with excess fat mass and fatty infiltrations in muscle tissue called myosteatosis. A diet-induced obesity model was developed to study fat infiltration in muscle tissue. Only male rats have been considered in these investigations neglecting that female rats might respond differently. The objective of this study was to determine if the response to diet-induced obesity can be generalized to both sexes,
