Complications of chronic suppurative otitis media: a retrospective review.

The purpose of this study was to review our patients with complications of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) and compare with literature. This retrospective study was performed over 10 years in our tertiary referral university hospital. During this period 4,630 patients with CSOM were admitted to the department and 906 patients underwent a surgery. From the records of the 4,630 patients, 121 patients (2.6%) with complications were identified. Of the 906 CSOM patients that underwent a surgery, 511 had cholesteatoma, and 395 had granulation and/or polyp tissue. Ninety-four of 511 (18.4%) p

Intramuscular thrombosed arteriovenous hemangioma of the upper right arm mimicking a neuroma of the ulnar nerve: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Soft tissue arteriovenous hemangiomas (AHs) are benign vascular hamartomas characterized by the presence of arteriovenous shunts. Few cases of soft tissue AHs have been found in the literature, and these were frequently described as cutaneous lesions of the limb or of the scalp. Intramuscular AHs are extremely rare. AHs are prevalent in children and women and are often associated with other types of malformations or genetic disorders. We present the case of an elderly woman with an intramuscular thrombosed AH on the volar side of the upper right arm. Owing to the clos

Neuromodulation of experimental Shigella infection reduces damage to the gut mucosa.

Bacillary dysentery arises when Shigella invades the colonic and rectal mucosae of the human gut and elicits a strong inflammatory response, which may lead to life-threatening complications. Hence, downregulation of the host inflammatory response is an appealing therapeutical alternative. The gastrointestinal tract is densely innervated, and nerve endings are often found in the vicinity of leukocytes. We have assessed the impact of experimental Shigella infection on levels of neuropeptides in the intestinal mucosa of rabbits. Ligated small intestinal loops were created in rabbits, and either l

Tissue-level thresholds for axonal damage in an experimental model of central nervous system white matter injury.

In vivo, tissue-level, mechanical thresholds for axonal injury were determined by comparing morphological injury and electrophysiological impairment to estimated tissue strain in an in vivo model of axonal injury. Axonal injury was produced by dynamically stretching the right optic nerve of an adult male guinea pig to one of seven levels of ocular displacement (Nlevel = 10; Ntotal = 70). Morphological injury was detected with neurofilament immunohistochemical staining (NF68, SM132). Simultaneously, functional injury was determined by the magnitude of the latency shift of the N35 peak of the vi

A reverse ulnar hypothenar flap for finger reconstruction.

A reverse-flow island flap from the hypothenar eminence of the hand was applied in 11 patients to treat palmar skin defects, amputation injuries, or flexion contractures of the little finger. There were three female and eight male patients, and their ages at the time of surgery averaged 46 years. A 3 x 1.5 to 5 X 2 cm fasciocutaneous flap from the ulnar aspect of the hypothenar eminence, which was located over the abductor digiti minimi muscle, was designed and transferred in a retrograde fashion to cover the skin and soft-tissue defects of the little finger. The flap was based on the ulnar pa

Acetylcholinesterase histochemistry and the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease: a 31/2-year experience.

Using a modification of the histochemical acetylcholinesterase (ACE) reaction of Karnovsky and Roots, 154 suction rectal biopsies performed during the clinical investigation for Hirschsprung's disease were examined and compared to simultaneously obtained paraffin-embedded, hematoxylin-eosin (H&E)-stained tissue. Serial paraffin sections were adequate to identify normal ganglia or to raise suspicion of Hirschsprung disease at initial biopsy in 129 of 154 (83%) cases. Interpretation of the ACE-stained tissue correlated exactly with this interpretation in 123 instances; 6 cases had uninterpretabl

Oriented growth of rat Schwann cells on aligned electrospun poly(methyl methacrylate) nanofibers.

Transplanted Schwann cells have the potential to serve as a support for regenerating neurites after spinal cord injury. However, implanted Schwann cells die off rapidly once transplanted partly owing to the absence of a proper matrix support, with a glia scar and a cavity being present instead at the injury site. For this report, we evaluated aligned electrospun poly(methyl methacrylate) nanofibers as a Schwann cell-loading scaffold in vitro. By monitoring the fluorescence of green fluorescence protein-containing Schwann cells cultured on nanofibers, we found that aligned nanofibers provided b

Point-of-Care Ultrasound-Guided Hydrodissection in Emergency Care: A Structured Narrative Review of Perineural and Related Musculoskeletal Applications.

BACKGROUND: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS)-guided hydrodissection is the intentional injection of fluid under real-time ultrasound guidance to separate a peripheral nerve or another defined tissue plane from adjacent structures. The role of hydrodissection in emergency care remains uncertain. METHODS: We conducted a structured narrative review. PubMed/Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) was searched from database inception through July 23, 2026, using a reproducible query covering ultrasound-guided hydrodissection of peripheral nerves and muscular, fascial, ten

Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI) and vascularized Denervated Muscle Targets (VDMT): a preclinical rabbit model as a translational feasibility and methodological platform.

BACKGROUND: Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces (RPNIs) and Vascularized Denervated Muscle Targets (VDMTs) are emerging strategies for nerve regeneration and myoelectric prosthesis control. Most preclinical studies have been conducted in rodents, limiting the evaluation of implantable electromyographic devices due to anatomical and scale-related constraints. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the first RPNI and VDMT models in rabbits as a translational platform for implantable neuromuscular interfaces. METHODS: A total of 8 rabbits (4 per group) were randomly assigned to RPNI (n =

Type 3A free anterolateral thigh chimeric flap based on the Zunyi classification for reconstructing diabetic foot wounds.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot wounds (DFWs) often present with multilayered tissue loss involving skin, fascia, muscle, and neurovascular structures, posing substantial reconstructive challenges. The Zunyi Classification provides a function-oriented framework for chimeric anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap design. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the Zunyi Type 3A chimeric ALT flap in the reconstruction of complex DFWs. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was carried out involving 28 patients with Wagner grade 2-4 DFWs who underwent reconstruction using a Zunyi Type 3A chimeric

NKG2D receptor ligands are cell surface biomarkers for injured murine and human nociceptive sensory neurons.

Nociceptors are primary afferent neurons that sense noxious stimuli. They can be activated by tissue injury as well as the accompanying local immune response. We have shown that following nerve injury in mice, cytotoxic Natural Killer (NK) cells infiltrate the peripheral nerve where they interact with stress-induced ligands of the activating receptor NKG2D (Klrk1). However, the diversity and specificity of NKG2D receptor ligands among sensory neuron subtypes, and translation of this mechanism to human cells, remains unknown. We used dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons cultured from C57BL/6J mic

Video-assisted thymectomy with contralateral surveillance camera: a means to minimize the risk of contralateral phrenic nerve injury.

OBJECTIVE: Thymectomy for thymoma has traditionally been performed through midsternotomy that provides excellent exposure for a complete and safe resection. Minimally invasive alternatives have not been extensively evaluated for this disease process because data regarding the long-term oncologic effectiveness of these techniques remain to be established. Furthermore, video-assisted surgery as a unilateral approach may compromise the extension of the resection and could cause irreversible damage to the phrenic nerve of the opposite side. We evaluated the clinical feasibility and safety of a bil

Regenerative and other responses to injury in the retinal stump of the optic nerve in adult albino rats: transection of the intraorbital optic nerve.

The proximal stump of the optic nerve was examined by electron microscopy from 1 d to 8 wk (dpo/wpo) after intraorbital transection. At 1 dpo a layer of axonal, cytoplasmic and myelin debris approximately 15 microns thick was present at the cut end. A zone approximately 25 microns thick of abnormal and partly degenerate tissue composed of many swollen axons filled with organelles of predominantly abnormal appearance lay between the zone of debris and more proximal levels of the optic nerve, which retained a normal appearance. The earliest putative axonal sprouts were seen at 1 dpo in this zone

The dorsal root ganglion of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

The peripheral nervous system of vertebrates develops through the merger of neuritic outgrowths from the central nervous system, and derivatives of the neural crest cells (ncc), including the spinal (or dorsal root) ganglia. Before the neural crest cells differentiate into neural tissue, they migrate through the vertebrate embryo. Relatively little comparative work has been done on the potential relationship between differential ncc migration and interspecific variation in the spinal ganglia. In Alligator mississippiensis, the sensory ganglia are located on the dorsal root, immediately distal

An Adult Case of Pharyngeal Injury Caused by Toothbrush.

Most toothbrush-induced oral injuries occur in children and are relatively shallow, involving the oral mucous membranes and musculature, but rarely deeper layers. Here, the management of an adult case of pharyngeal injury caused by a toothbrush is discussed. A man fell while brushing his teeth, and his toothbrush stuck in his throat. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a toothbrush stuck in the left parapharyngeal space, reaching the subcutaneous tissue of the posterior neck. The toothbrush was surgically removed because blind removal could damage major cervical arterioles and nerves.

A tearfully painful darkness.

A 70-year-old woman presented with new onset of left eye and facial pain. Ophthalmic and neurological examinations, magnetic resonance imaging brain, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein were unrevealing. A few days later, she developed vision loss in her left eye. Examination revealed decreased visual acuity with a relative afferent pupillary defect in the left eye and a diffuse mild swelling of the left optic nerve head. Repeat magnetic resonance imaging showed T2 hyperintensity and enhancement of the intraorbital optic nerve and surrounding tissues with no other intracrani

The Role of Substance P in the Regulation of Bone and Cartilage Metabolic Activity.

Substance P (SP) is a neuropeptide that is released from sensory nerve endings and is widely present in nerve fibers. It acts on bones and related tissues by binding to receptors, thereby regulating bone metabolism, cartilage metabolism, and fracture healing. SP has attracted widespread attention as a signaling substance that can be recognized by both the immune system and the nervous system. Previous studies have shown that bone and chondrocytes can synthesize and secrete sensory neuropeptides and express their receptors, and can promote proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, matrix synth

Ossification of the ligamentum flavum.

Ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF or OYL: ossification of the yellow ligament) usually occurs at the lower thoracic level and causes various types of neurological symptoms in accordance with the compression level of the spinal cord, the nerve roots, the conus medullaris, and the cauda equina. Although the greatest compression level to the nerve tissues is thought to be the most pathognomonic one, it is difficult to diagnose it in some cases. The effectiveness of conservative treatment such as applying a corset is small. Early surgical treatment is strongly recommended for the patients

[New options in the treatment of painful shoulder syndrome].

Shoulder pain is a common complaint in clinical practice in Primary Care and affects 20% of the general population. The usual form of treatment is based on NSAIDs, rest, rehabilitation and, as an alternative, a local injection into the joint. There are also radiofrequency techniques on the suprascapular nerve in the cases of refractory pain to these therapies. Radiofrequency can be used in two ways: Conventional Radiofrequency, using high temperatures to the target tissue with the aim of producing a thermal neurolysis and Pulsed Radiofrequency where the temperatures are lower and produces a te
