An in-body networking system for communication between wearable and implantable therapeutics.

Networks of bioelectronic sensors and actuators enable closed-loop therapies that connect distant, related physiological dynamics. Currently, device interactions are limited by communication methods that inefficiently penetrate tissue and require bulky components. Inspired by the ionic signaling of the nervous system, we engineered a communication platform that uses tissue as a conductive medium to transmit signals among implants and wearables through epidermal, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, and gastrointestinal spaces. Devices generate transient electric fields that selectively activate othe

Human lateral occipital complex is invariant for position and size transformations at the single-neuron level.

Object recognition relies on neural invariance to changes in position and size, yet the underlying mechanisms in humans remain uncertain due to the challenges that accompany single-unit recordings in cortical areas. We conducted the first single-unit recordings investigating position and size invariance in the human lateral occipital complex (LO) using two microelectrode arrays implanted in distinct LO subregions of a single patient. Our findings reveal that LO neurons exhibit strong shape tuning. Receptive fields were smaller than previously reported in literature. Time-resolved correlational

Low-Density Primary Cell Culture of Postnatal Murine Cerebellar Progenitors In Vitro.

Cerebellum is the major player of motor functions of the body, as well as being involved in plenty of nonmotor behavior traits. There are numerous disorders related to cerebellum that have severe consequences for patients and the absence of an effective treatment, so it is crucial to emphasize conducting research directed to deeply understand the biology of this structure, giving special importance to stem cells that could have regenerative potential. Here, we describe a novel protocol for isolating neural stem cells from postnatal mouse cerebellum, allowing for the study of progenitor cells f

Preliminary study on the neural mechanisms of four tone recognition in deaf children using fMRI.

Vocal intonation, a fundamental element of speech, is pivotal for comprehending and communicating effectively. Nevertheless, children suffering from hearing impairment encounter difficulties in recognizing vocal intonation patterns, primarily stemming from their auditory deficits. In 2020, a study conducted at Tianjin Medical University General Hospital in Tianjin, China, recruited five deaf children and two children with normal hearing (male; mean age = 10.21 ± 0.4 years) to compare the differences between deaf and normal children in four Chinese tone recognition tasks. The results revealed t

In Situ Reprogramming of Neurons and Glia - A Risk in Altering Memory and Personality?

The recent emergence of reprogramming technologies to convert brain cell types or epigenetically alter neurons and neural progenitors in vivo and in situ hold significant promises in brain repair and neuronal aging reversal. However, given the significant epigenetic and transcriptomic changes to components of the existing neuronal cells and network, we question if these reprogramming technology might inadvertently alter or erase memory engrams, conceivably resulting in changes in narrative identity or personality. We suggest that the nature of these alterations might be less predictable compar

Necessity of an Integrative Animal Model for a Comprehensive Study of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Animal models of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been used to study and understand the behavioral, neural, and physiological mechanisms underlying ADHD. These models allow researchers to conduct controlled experiments and manipulate specific brain regions or neurotransmitter systems to investigate the underlying causes of ADHD and test potential drug targets or treatments. However, it is essential to note that while these models can provide valuable insights, they do not ideally mimic the complex and heterogeneous nature of ADHD and should be interpreted cautiously. Keratoconus Diagnosis: From Fundamentals to Artificial Intelligence: A Systematic Narrative Review.

The remarkable recent advances in managing keratoconus, the most common corneal ectasia, encouraged researchers to conduct further studies on the disease. Despite the abundance of information about keratoconus, debates persist regarding the detection of mild cases. Early detection plays a crucial role in facilitating less invasive treatments. This review encompasses corneal data ranging from the basic sciences to the application of artificial intelligence in keratoconus patients. Diagnostic systems utilize automated decision trees, support vector machines, and various types of neural networks,

Aligned Electroactive Electrospun Fibrous Scaffolds for Peripheral Nerve Regeneration.

Effective repair and functional recovery of large peripheral nerve deficits are urgent clinical needs. A biofunctional electroactive scaffold typically acts as a "bridge" for the repair of large nerve defects. In this study, we constructed a biomimetic piezoelectric and conductive aligned polypyrrole (PPy)/polydopamine (PDA)/poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) electrospun fibrous scaffold to improve the hydrophilicity and cellular compatibility of PLLA and restore the weakened piezoelectric effect of PDA, which is beneficial in promoting Schwann cell differentiation and dorsal root ganglion neuronal ext

Brain Anatomy in Boys with Conduct Disorder: Differences Among Aggression Subtypes.

Aggression is a core feature of conduct disorder (CD), but the motivation, execution of aggression may vary. A deeper understanding of the neural substrates of aggressive behaviours is critical for effective clinical intervention. Seventy-six Boys with CD (50 with impulsive aggression (I-CD) and 26 with premeditated aggression (P-CD)) and 69 healthy controls (HCs) underwent a structural MRI scan and behavioural assessments. Whole-brain analyses revealed that, compared to HCs, the I-CD group showed significant cortical thinning in the right frontal cortex, while the P-CD group demonstrated sign

The human mirror neuron system-A common neural basis for social cognition?

According to the theory of embodied simulation, mirror neurons (MN) in our brain's motor system are the neuronal basis of all social-cognitive processes. The assumption of such a mirroring process in humans could be supported by results showing that within one person the same region is involved in different social cognition tasks. We conducted an fMRI-study with 75 healthy participants who completed three tasks: imitation, empathy, and theory of mind. We analyzed the data using group conjunction analyses and individual shared voxel counts. Across tasks, across and within participants, we find

Giant Juvenile Ectopic Schwannoma of the Temporal Bone.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic intracranial schwannomas (those that do not arise from a named cranial nerve) are rare. They account for <2% of surgically resected central nervous system schwannomas. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 14-year-old boy presenting with a left conductive hearing loss and temporal bone deformity. No facial or cranial nerve deficits were present. Cross-sectional imaging demonstrated a large expansile extra-axial temporal bone mass, extending into and distorting the middle cranial fossa. At surgical resection the tumor was functionally and anatomically distinct from the

Dyslexia on a continuum: A complex network approach.

We investigated the efficacy of graph-theoretic metrics of task-related functional brain connectivity in predicting reading difficulty and explored the hypothesis that task conditions emphasizing audiovisual integration would be especially diagnostic of reading difficulty. An fMRI study was conducted in which 24 children (8 to 14 years old) who were previously diagnosed with dyslexia completed a rhyming judgment task under three presentation modality conditions. Regression analyses found that characteristic connectivity metrics of the reading network showed a presentation modality dependent re

How to use stem cells for repair in stroke patients.

Regenerative cell therapy is a promising therapeutic strategy in neurology, most notably to improve stroke recovery. Although tolerability and feasibility have apparently been validated, many questions remain as to what is the best type of cells to use, the best route and the post-stroke delay for administration. Two main strategies have currently emerged: intravenous injection of mesenchymal stem cells with systemic trophic support; and intracerebral grafting of neural stem cells with brain repair effects at the lesion site. Multicenter clinical trials have just begun and are starting to asse

Genetic Background of Hirschsprung Disease: A Bridge Between Basic Science and Clinical Application.

Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a congenital disorder, defined by partial or complete loss of the neuronal ganglion cells in the intestinal tract, which is caused by the failure of neural crest cells to migrate completely during intestinal development during fetal life. HSCR has a multifactorial etiology, and genetic factors play a key role in its pathogenesis; these include mutations within several gene loci. These have been identified by screening candidate genes, or by conducting genome wide association (GWAS) studies. However, only a small portion of them have been proposed as major genet

Endoscopy-assisted resection of a submandibular gland mass via a thyroidectomy incision.

Submandibular gland excision is traditionally performed via the transcervical approach. In an effort to avoid or reduce visible scarring and nerve injury, diverse innovative surgical trials have been conducted. We report the case of a submandibular gland mass that was endoscopically resected through a thyroidectomy incision. The patient was a 56-year-old woman with a long-standing right-sided submandibular gland mass and a smaller thyroid gland mass that was recently discovered on a routine checkup. The thyroid mass was managed with a total thyroidectomy. The submandibular mass was resected wi

Gait and apathy as relevant symptoms of subcortical vascular dementia.

BACKGROUND: Subcortical vascular dementia relates to small-vessel disease and hypoperfusion, resulting in focal and diffuse ischemic white matter lesions. The main target of the disease are the frontal subcortical neural networks. There is no clinical standard definition of the pathology, on the contrary, everyday clinical practice suggests dominant behavioral alterations and dysexecutive syndrome. METHODS: The aim of this study was to investigate gait disorders, behavioral alteration, and drug intake of a subcortical population with dementia (n = 1155). A complete neuropsychological examinat

Bipolar and major depressive disorder: neuroimaging the developmental-degenerative divide.

Both major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder are the subject of a voluminous imaging and genetics literature. Here, we attempt a comprehensive review of MRI and metabolic PET studies conducted to date on these two disorders, and interpret our findings from the perspective of developmental and degenerative models of illness. Elevated activity and volume loss of the hippocampus, orbital and ventral prefrontal cortex are recurrent themes in the literature. In contrast, dorsal aspects of the PFC tend to display hypometabolism. Ventriculomegaly and white matter hyperintensities are intimatel

Aromatase: a neuroprotective enzyme.

Estradiol, in addition to its participation in neuroendocrine regulation and sexual behavior, has neuroprotective properties. Different types of brain injury induce the expression of the enzyme aromatase in reactive astroglia. This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of testosterone and other C19 steroids to estradiol. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition of brain aromatase results in marked neurodegeneration after different forms of mild neurodegenerative stimuli that do not compromise neuronal survival under control conditions. Furthermore, aromatase mediates neuroprotective effects of precurso

Liquid secretion properties of airway submucosal glands.

The tracheobronchial submucosal glands secrete liquid that is important for hydrating airway surfaces, supporting mucociliary transport, and serving as a fluid matrix for numerous secreted macromolecules including the gel-forming mucins. This review details the essential structural elements of airway glands and summarizes what is currently known regarding the ion transport processes responsible for producing the liquid component of gland secretion. Liquid secretion most likely arises from serous cells and is principally under neural control with muscarinic agonists, substance P, and vasoactive
