BACKGROUND & AIMS: In contrast to the dramatic decrease in the overall incidence of gastric cancer, there has been a reported increase in the incidence of cases located in the gastric cardia. The aim of this study was to identify changes in site- and histology-specific incidence rates of gastric adenocarcinoma during a 50-year period.

One hundred and one patients with pyriform sinus carcinoma treated at the Netherlands Cancer Institute were studied retrospectively. The patients were staged according to the UICC criteria of 1987: there were no stage I, 23 stage II, 30 stage III, and 48 stage IV patients. In the 25-year period 1968-92, 3,317 out of 477,420 patients admitted to Frederiksberg Hospital experienced 3,491 episodes of bacteremia. Enterobacteriaceae dominated as causative agents (57%), following by Gram-positive cocci (31%) and anaerobes (7%). Polymicrobial bacteremia was found in 8% of the episodes. Hypertension is a well known finding in primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT). In the present study, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate were recorded before, during and after surgery for HPT in 101 patients (mean serum calcium 2.96 +/- 0.22 mmol/l) and compared to 91 scheduled general surgical patients matched for age, sex, duration of surgery and type of general anesthesia. In 8 years (1985-1992), 65 cases of human visceral leishmaniasis (HVL) have been diagnosed in the department of Alpes-Maritimes, France, 56 of them having been infected locally. The annual frequency has increased from 3 cases in 1985 to 15 cases in 1992. There is a low rate of paediatric cases (29%) and a predominance of males among adult cases (85%). Over the periof from 1980-1989 year at Clinic of Dermatovenerology in Nis, 1988 patients with contact allergic dermatitis were tested with standard allergen batteries. Senzibilisation to metals - chrom, nickel and cobalt was proved in 206 (10,36%) cases, 132 (64,08%) males and 74 (35,92%) females. The most frequent allerge was potassium bichromate - 155 (7,79%) cases, and then nickel sulphate - 82 (4,12%). Positive patch test only to one metal had 148 (71,84%) patients, 44 (21,36%) to two metals and 14 (6,80%) had positive patch test to all three metals.

Repetitive cerebral ischemia in gerbils produces delayed neuronal damage in the substantia nigra reticulata (SNr). This damage begins 4 to 5 days after the insult and is severe by day 7. The damage can be attenuated by GABA agonists. There is a prominent GABAergic striatal pathway to the SNr. Damage to this pathway leads to progressive loss of SNr neurons. A retrospective analysis of 55 cases of osteomalacia shows that poor calcium intake and poor sunlight exposure are the most common causes for osteomalacia. However, in patients with normal nutritional history, other disorders such as renal tubular acidosis and tumour induced osteomalacia should be looked for. A careful drug history, particularly anticonvulsant use is essential. In 4 patients there was an association between anti-tuberculous drug use and osteomalacia. Further prospective studies are needed to determine the relationship between Rifamicin use and osteomalacia.

A radiological study of the oesophagus of a cohort of patients was carried during a 13 year period in the municipality of Mambaí Goiás. Barium swallow findings were recorded on 70mm film using a portable machine. Of 731 patients examined 382 (52.3%) were seropositive for T. cruzi. The sexes were equally divided. The incidence of detectable megaoesophagus was 7.9% among the cohort and 14.2% in the seropositive individuals. Progression of the disease was noted during this longitudinal study in 21.7% of males and 16.6% of females.

94 patients have been operated upon for haemorrhagic gastroduodenal ulcer disease in the Wenckebach-Krankenhaus during the years 1986-1990. In all but 6 patients the ulcer has been controlled by an emergency gastroscopy. 25 of these patients had to undergo emergency operation at once for persistent bleeding after gastroscopy. We report the results over 15 years (1977-1991) for biochemical diagnoses of patients referred from throughout Italy and suspected of having a mucopolysaccharidosis.
