Hernia : the journal of hernias and abdominal wall surgery2014eng
PURPOSE: Most previous reports have shown that the basic mechanism of inguinal hernia involves insufficient collagen strength and metabolism. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether joint hypermobility is involved in the development of inguinal hernia in children and to investigate oxidative stress parameters and prolidase activity in tissue samples from children with inguinal hernia.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study involving 41 patients (age, 6.36 ± 2.96 years) with inguinal hernia treated in the pediatric surgery department of our institution and 40 age- and sex-matched controls (

Ischemia-induced adhesion is very common after surgery, and leads to severe abdominal adhesions. Unfortunately, many existing barrier agents used for adhesion prevention have only limited success. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of biodegradable and thermosensitive poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL-PEG-PCL) micelles for the prevention of postoperative ischemia-induced adhesion. We found that the synthesized PCL-PEG-PCL copolymer could self-assemble in an aqueous solution to form micelles with a mean size of 40.1 ± 2.7 nm at 10°C, and t

BACKGROUND: Nutritional status is important in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. We aimed to compare the peritoneal transport (PT) characteristics and indicators of nutritional status in elderly and non-elderly PD patients.
METHODS: One-hundred and four consecutive patients were divided into either the elderly (>65 years old; n = 44) or the non-elderly (≤65 years old; n = 60) group. PT was assessed via the peritoneal equilibration test, Kt/V (K dialyzer clearance of urea, t dialysis time, V volume of distribution of urea), total creatinine clearance (CrCl), and glomerular filtration rate. Dissemination of ovarian tumors involves the implantation of cancer spheroids into the mesothelial monolayer on the walls of peritoneal and pleural cavity organs. Biopsies of tumors attached to peritoneal organs show that mesothelial cells are not present under tumor masses. We have developed a live, image-based in vitro model in which interactions between tumor spheroids and mesothelial cells can be monitored in real time to provide spatial and temporal understanding of mesothelial clearance. Here we provide evidence that ovarian cancer spheroids utilize integrin- and talin- dependent activat

OBJECTIVE: In the management of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), the identification of peritoneal deposits is the most important prognostic factor. We conducted a prospective study to evaluate the role of multidetector CT (MDCT) in identifying peritoneal deposits pre-operatively.
METHODS: 38 previously untreated patients (median age 50 years; range 26-70 years) were evaluated with contrast-enhanced MDCT of the abdomen and pelvis. All CT scans were performed on a four-slice MDCT scanner with thin-slice image acquisition. Multiplanar coronal, sagittal or oblique images were constructed and all

BACKGROUND: Post-operative peritoneal adhesions are common and serious complications for modern medicine. We aim to prevent post-surgical adhesions using biodegradable and thermosensitive poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-PCL-PEG, PECE) hydrogel. In this work, we investigated the effect of PECE hydrogel on preventing post-surgical abdominal adhesions in mouse and rat models.
RESULTS: The PECE hydrogel in sol state could be transformed into gel in less than 20 s at 37°C. In addition, the PECE hydrogel could be easily adhered to the damaged peritoneal surface

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal fibrosis is a common complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD) although the pathway involved is unclear. Of this article, angiotensin II (Ang II)-mediated upregulation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway as well as their downstream profibrotic genes including transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 and fibronectin (FN) was investigated.
METHODS: Rat peritoneal mesothelial cells (RPMCs) were obtained by enzymatic digestion from the colic omentum. After incubated with Ang II, real-time PCR, ELISA, and Western blot analysis were used to determine RPMCs cellu

It is unknown whether noncomplicated acute appendicitis cause bacterial translocation. In this study, we aimed to test development of the bacterial translocation in the patients who were operated for acute appendicitis. In this prospective study, 10 control patients who underwent elective operations because of other reasons, and 18 patients with noncomplicated acute appendicitis were evaluated. No patients took prophylactic antibiotic. After laparotomy, samples were obtained from peritoneal leaf just close to wound edge, and peritoneal swab culture from right paracolic region. Before appendect

OBJECTIVES: 1) Characterize changes in the surgical treatment of anorectal melanoma over time. 2) Determine if the extent of surgical resection is associated with outcome. 3) Identify prognostic factors correlating with survival.
SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Although early data suggested improved survival in patients undergoing abdominoperineal resection (APR) for primary anorectal melanoma, such an aggressive approach may be unwarranted as distant relapse rates are high. We have seen a trend toward less aggressive surgical treatment of the local disease over the past 20 years.

BACKGROUND: Ultrafiltration failure (UFF) in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is a transient phenomenon during acute peritonitis and a permanent complication in long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD). The high solute transport rates during acute peritonitis are probably caused by an increased number of perfused peritoneal capillaries. Long-term PD is associated with an increased number of peritoneal microvessels, leading to an enlargement of the anatomic vascular surface area. This leads to high mass transfer area coefficients (MTAC) and to UFF. Impaired conductance to glucose, lea

While fasting suppresses sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity in most peripheral tissues, the response of sympathetic nerves in white adipose tissue (WAT) is reportedly stimulatory. To confirm this finding and to determine if the fasting response in WAT is susceptible to developmental modification, SNS activity was compared in fed and fasted animals using techniques of [3H]norepinephrine ([3H]NE) turnover. Studies were performed in commercially reared 7-week-old male rats, in male rats reared in the local vivarium, and in male rats reared until 30 days of age at either 18 degrees C or 30

BACKGROUND: Previous reports have shown that arginine (Arg) enhances phagocytic activity of macrophages and is required for macrophage-mediated toxicity toward tumor cells. Few studies have addressed the importance of Arg supplementation on macrophage and neutrophil function after infection and sepsis. This study examined the effect of Arg-supplemented diets before and Arg-enriched total parenteral nutrition (TPN) after sepsis or both on the phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages and blood polymorphonuclear cells in rats with gut-derived sepsis.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats were assigned

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronan (HA) is a major component of interstitial tissue that participates in fluid homeostasis, response to inflammation, and wound healing. Previous studies have shown that intraperitoneal administration of HA can affect peritoneal fluid transport during short peritoneal dialysis exchanges in anesthetized rats. We sought to investigate the effect of high molecular weight HA on peritoneal permeability in conscious rats during dialysis exchanges up to 8 hours in duration. In addition, we sought to investigate the absorption of HA from the peritoneal cavity, its accumulation in p

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis causes damage to peritoneal mesothelial cells primarily because dialysis fluids have a high glucose concentration. This study examined the abnormalities of gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) in human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HPMCs) exposed to relatively high levels of glucose. Also, ability of hexamethylene bisacetamide (HMBA) to up-regulate GJIC in HPMCs exposed to high levels of glucose was measured.
METHODS: An assay that monitors the recovery of fluorescence after photobleaching was used to measure GJIC in primary cultured HPMCs. The cel
