OBJECTIVE: To find the effective maneuver of a positional test.
METHODS: We performed three different maneuvers of a positional test in 86 vertiginous patients in supine-lying position in the following order: (1) "body-only maneuver": a patient turned only his body to one side while keeping his head still; (2) "head-only maneuver": a patient turned only his head to one side while keeping the body still; (3) "head-and-body maneuver": a patient turned his head and body together to one side. Eye movement during the whole procedure was recorded by two-dimensional electronystagmography.
RESULTS:

CONTEXT: Sudden ankle inversion tests have been used to investigate whether the onset of peroneal muscle activity is delayed in patients with chronically unstable ankle joints. Before interpreting test results of latency times in patients with chronic ankle instability and healthy subjects, the reliability of these measures must be first demonstrated.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the test-retest reliability of variables measured during a sudden ankle inversion movement in standing subjects with healthy ankle joints.
DESIGN: Validation study.
SETTING: Research laboratory.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Balance disability is common after stroke, but there is little detailed information about it. The aims of this study were to investigate the frequency of balance disability; to characterize different levels of disability; and to identify demographics, stroke pathology factors, and impairments associated with balance disability.
SUBJECTS: The subjects studied were 75 people with a first-time anterior circulation stroke; 37 subjects were men, the mean age was 71.5 years (SD=12.2), and 46 subjects (61%) had left hemiplegia.
METHODS: Prospective hospital-based cross-secti

Head injury with fracture of the petrous bone is frequent and directly related to the development of human activity. Head trauma is associated with nearly 75% of traffic accidents; 5% of them with petrous bone fracture. Based on a clinical case, the acute injuries and secondary acoustic or vestibular sequelae after low-energy cranio-cerebral trauma are discussed here. The subject was a victim of a low-energy head trauma with brief loss of consciousness and translabyrinthine fracture of the petrous bone. This fracture caused invalidating equilibrium disorders related to a perilymphatic fistula.

The present study investigated goal-directed linear locomotion in nine Menière's patients before and after (1 week, 1 and 3 months) a curative unilateral vestibular neurotomy (UVN). Experiments were done using a 3D motion analysis system in subjects walking eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC) towards a real or memorized target, respectively. Locomotor pattern (velocity, step length, step frequency and walk ratio) and walking trajectory deviations were evaluated for normal and fast speeds of locomotion and compared to those recorded in 10 healthy subjects. Before UVN, patients showed no walking

The purpose of this study was to determine how sensorimotor status and balance control would be affected by lumbar nerve root compression in older adults. The vibration sense, joint motion sense, and strength of the lower legs of healthy older adults and older patients with lumbar nerve root compression (n = 17 each group) were tested for sensorimotor function. The motion of the center of pressure during quiet standing, center of pressure during forward reach, and the score on Berg's functional balance test were examined for static, dynamic, and functional balance control abilities, respective

Two hundred and fifteen patients were diagnosed and treated for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of the horizontal canal (BPPV-HC). All patients were tested with conventional positional nystagmus tests lying supine and rotating head for geotropic nystagmus, registered with Frenzels glasses, and in 109 cases with ENG. The walk-rotate-walk (WRW) test, developed by one of us (T.R.) and described in the text, was applied to all patients. The immediate good treatment results with Lempert's maneuver verify the correct diagnosis of BPPV-HC. The WRW test is a more sensitive test for BPPV-HC than e

The combined findings of abnormalities of the incus and stapes, absence of the oval window, absence of the stapedius muscle (with absent pyramidal eminence and tympanic sinus in most cases), and abnormalities of different parts of the inner ear (dysplastic cochlea, hypoplastic or dysplastic vestibule, and absent semicircular canals) are characteristic of the CHARGE association. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging using 1-mm-thick contiguous slices proved useful in demonstrating the broad spectrum of temporal bone abnormalities in patients with the CHARGE association.

Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a member of a larger gene family including amyloid precursor-like proteins (APLP), APLP2 and APLP1. To examine the function of APLP2 in vivo, we generated APLP2 knockout (KO) mice. They are of normal size, fertile, and appear healthy up to 22 months of age. We observed no impaired axonal outgrowth of olfactory sensory neurons following bulbectomy, suggesting against an important role for APLP2 alone in this process. Because APLP2 and APP are highly homologous and may serve similar functions in vivo, we generated mice with targeted APLP2 and APP alleles. Appro

Gross motor development of preschool children prenatally exposed to alcohol and marijuana was assessed as part of a longitudinal study. Most mothers in the study were light to moderate users and discontinued or decreased use of alcohol and marijuana after the first trimester of pregnancy. The women were of lower socioeconomic status, half of the sample was African-American, and most were single. Gross motor development was evaluated with balance and ball-handling items at 3 years. Balance items included walking on a line, walking on a balance beam, standing on one foot, standing on tiptoes, an

Spontaneous motor activity (SMA), conditioned avoidance response (CAR), muscle coordination (MC) and pentobarbital sleep were tested in rats treated orally for 90 days with tolerated doses of the cyclodiene insecticides, aldrin (1 mg/kg) and endosulfan (2 mg/kg). The same tests were repeated in similarly treated animals after injecting chlorpromazine (4 mg/kg, i.p.). Both the insecticides shortened pentobarbital sleeping time indicating their microsomal enzyme inducing property. Aldrin suppressed SMA, CAR and MC, whereas endosulfan stimulated SMA, inhibited CAR and unaltered MC. However, their

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant attention to the respiratory system, with much focus on lung-related disorders. However, the diaphragm, a crucial component of respiratory physiology, has not been adequately studied, especially in the context of long COVID. This review explores the multipotential role of the diaphragm in both respiratory health and disease, emphasizing its involvement in long-term complications following SARS-CoV-2 infection. The diaphragm's fundamental role in respiratory physiology and its impact on balance and posture control, breathing patterns, and autonomic

Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) helps stabilize subjects when balance and posture are compromised. This work aimed to define the cortical regions that GVS activates in normal subjects. We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to test the hypothesis that GVS activates similar cortical areas as a passive movement. We used transcranial current stimulation (cathode in the right mastoid process and anode in the FPz frontopolar point) of bipolar direct current (2 mA), false GVS (sham), vibration (neutral stimulus), and back and forth motion (positive control of vestibular movement

Posture and gait are maintained by sensory inputs from the vestibular, visual, and somatosensory systems and motor outputs. Upon vestibular damage, the visual and/or somatosensory systems functionally substitute by cortical mechanisms called "sensory reweighting". We investigated the cerebrocortical mechanisms underlying sensory reweighting after unilateral labyrinthectomy (UL) in mice. Arc-dVenus transgenic mice, in which the gene encoding the fluorescent protein dVenus is transcribed under the control of the promoter of the immediate early gene Arc, were used in combination with whole-brain

BACKGROUND: Pusher behavior (PB) is a posture disorder due to a subjective bias in verticality perception. However, muscle activity characteristics in this disorder and the effective treatments are not known.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate electromyographic (EMG) activity and the effect of electrical stimulation (ES) in PB.
METHODS: Two PB patients were enrolled. The EMG activity was measured over the upper and lower limb muscles on the non-paretic side, and over the trunk muscles on both sides during sitting. We used a modified ABA single-case design consisting of consecutive baseline, intervent

Correction of the overall coronal and/or sagittal plane deformities is one of the main predictors of successful spinal surgery. In routine clinical practice, spinal alignment is assessed using several spinal and pelvic parameters, such as pelvic incidence and tilt, sacral slope, lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, and sagittal vertical axis. Standard values have been defined for all these parameters, and the formulas of correction have been set for determining the surgical strategy. However, several factors can potentially bias these formulas. First, all standard values are measured using conv

The problems of degenerative-dystrophic abnormalities stimulate the development of new skills and methods of treatment and rehabilitation of the diseases. The goal of the study was to determine the efficacy of hippotherapy in patients with coxarthrosis, according to functional and biomechanical parameters. Hippotherapy involves the utilization of horseback riding to stimulate the patient's normal reactions and locomotion; to improve the balance and coordination of movement, normalize muscle tension, and eliminate pathological reflexes. The advantage of the hippotherapy is in the specific postu
