Trajectories of genetic risk across dimensions of alcohol use behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use behaviors (AUBs) manifest in a variety of normative and problematic ways across the life course, all of which are heritable. Twin studies show that genetic influences on AUBs change across development, but this is usually not considered in research identifying and investigating the genes linked to AUBs. AIMS: Understanding the dynamics of how genes shape AUBs could point to critical periods in which interventions may be most effective and provide insight into the mechanisms behind AUB-related genes. In this project, we investigate how genetic associations with AUBs unf

Glutathione, Vitamin C, and Cysteine Use in Autistic Children With Disruptive Behavior: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Crossover Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication differences and restricted interests. One proposed biologic mechanism underlying ASD is oxidative stress, leading to the clinical use of glutathione based on anecdotal reports of improved behavior in autistic children. In this pilot study, we tested this observation using a randomized clinical trial format to collect preliminary data on glutathione safety and efficacy. METHODS: Glutathione and glutathione in combination with vitamin C and N-acetylcysteine (Trio) were teste

Cognitive Rehabilitation and Exposure/Sorting Therapy for Late-Life Hoarding: Effects on Neuropsychological Performance.

OBJECTIVES: Hoarding disorder (HD) is characterized by urges to save items, difficulty discarding possessions, and excessive clutter and has been associated with executive functioning deficits. A randomized controlled trial comparing Cognitive Rehabilitation and Exposure/Sorting Therapy (CREST) with a care management control condition demonstrated the efficacy of CREST in reducing hoarding symptoms in older adults. The purpose of the current study was to assess whether CREST may also lead to improved executive functioning. METHOD: All participants were administered a neurocognitive battery at

Maternal immune responses and obstetrical outcomes of pregnant women with COVID-19 and possible health risks of offspring.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has spread rapidly across the world. The vast majority of patients with COVID-19 manifest mild to moderate symptoms but may progress to severe cases or even mortalities. Young adults of reproductive age are the most affected population by SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, there is no consensus yet if pregnancy contributes to the severity of COVID-19. Initial studies of pregnant women have found that COVID-19 significantly increases the risk of preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, and low birth weight, which have been associated with non-comm

Does MAOA increase susceptibility to prenatal stress in young children?

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated a gene-by-prenatal-environment interaction whereby the monoamine oxidase A gene (MAOA) modified the impact of prenatal tobacco exposure (PTE) on adolescent disruptive behavior (DB), with the MAOA risk genotype varying by sex. We extend this work by examining whether this mechanism is evident with another common adversity, prenatal stress exposure (PSE), and whether sex differences are present earlier in development in closer proximity to exposure. METHODS: Participants were 281 mothers and their 285 children derived from a prenatal cohort with in-depth p

Use of context in pragmatic language comprehension by children with Asperger syndrome or high-functioning autism.

Utilizing relevance theory, this study investigated the ability of children with Asperger syndrome (AS) and high-functioning autism (HFA) to use context when answering questions and when giving explanations for their correct answers. Three groups participated in this study: younger AS/HFA group (age 7-9, n=16), older AS/HFA group (age 10-12, n=23) and a normally functioning control group (age 7-9, n=23). The results indicated that the younger AS/HFA group did less well when answering contextually demanding questions compared to the control group, and the performance of the older AS/HFA group f

Psychological characteristic subtypes in adolescents with mental disorders and their associations with self-injury behavior and childhood maltreatment.

OBJECTIVES: Self-injury behavior is a prevalent mental health problem among adolescents. Childhood maltreatment is closely associated with the development of alexithymia, impulsivity, and self-injury behavior in adolescents and young adults with mental disorders; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to classify psychiatric patients aged 12 to 24 years into psychological subtypes based on alexithymic and impulsive traits, to explore differences in self-injury behavior among these subtypes, and to examine whether different forms of childhood maltreatment are associa

Classroom-Level and Individual-Level Prosociality and Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Although individual prosociality, defined as voluntary behavior intended to benefit another, is known to promote help-seeking behaviors among adolescents, it remains unclear whether a prosocial community, such as the classroom, also facilitates these behaviors. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations of classroom-level and individual-level prosociality with help-seeking behaviors, considering age and gender, and to examine moderation effects of being bullied. Examining promotive and protective effects of ethnic identity on alcohol and cannabis use among Black young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Experiences of racial discrimination among Black Americans are associated with numerous adverse behavioral health outcomes, including risk for substance use. Research has shown ethnic identity to be directly related to reduced substance use risk among Black Americans, as well as mitigate substance use risk as a consequence of exposure to racial discrimination. However, whether the specific facet of ethnic identity (affirmation and exploration), is related to the relationship between racial discrimination and problem substance use based on substance type is unclear. Thus, the curr

Granger sensori-behavioral functional taxonomy of neuronal ensemble activity from two-photon calcium imaging data.

Understanding how neuronal populations interact to encode and transform sensory information is a fundamental challenge in computational neuroscience. Most existing studies, however, study neural encoding, behavioral readout, and functional connectivity as disjoint problems. Two-photon calcium imaging enables simultaneous recording of large neuronal ensembles in vivo, driven by diverse stimuli and eliciting distinct behaviors. However, extracting directional functional connectivity metrics as well as encoding and readout properties of neurons from such data remains difficult due to indirect and

Staying Safe for the Long Haul: A Health Belief Model Analysis of COVID-19 Preventive Behaviors Through the Lens of Long COVID.

Health problems associated with post-acute COVID-19, also known as "Long COVID," range from mild to severe. The best defense against this potentially serious condition is to prevent COVID-19 infection and reinfection. The same preventive measures for COVID-19 may be used to help prevent the spread of Long COVID. This study used the Health Belief Model (HBM) to examine whether and how public understanding and awareness of Long COVID and its prevention shape the adoption of COVID-19 preventive behaviors. N = 605 English-speaking U.S.-based adults were recruited via Qualtrics. Predictors of inten

Repetitive and stereotyped behaviors in neurodevelopmental disorders: an observational analysis of four diagnostic groups.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive and Stereotyped Behaviors (ST) are one of the key features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and they frequently occur in children with developmental delay/intellectual disability or sensory deprivation, but they are also described in children otherwise typical. This study aims to describe and compare ST in children with different neurodevelopmental disorders and in children having stereotypies but no other medical diagnosis (primary stereotypies). METHODS: The study sample comprised children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) developmental delay (DD), severe visual im

Reflecting on Behavioral Spillover in Context: How Do Behavioral Motivations and Awareness Catalyze Other Environmentally Responsible Actions in Brazil, China, and Denmark?

Responding to serious environmental problems, requires urgent and fundamental shifts in our day-to-day lifestyles. This paper employs a qualitative, cross-cultural approach to explore people's subjective self-reflections on their experiences of pro-environmental behavioral spillover in three countries; Brazil, China, and Denmark. Behavioral spillover is an appealing yet elusive phenomenon, but offers a potential way of encouraging wider, voluntary lifestyle shifts beyond the scope of single behavior change interventions. Behavioral spillover theory proposes that engaging in one pro-environment

Modeled behavior of neuropathic pain with social defect in rats: a preliminary methodology evaluation.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Social defect and chronic pain are 2 major health problems and recent data has demonstrated that they generally exist concurrently. However, a powerful evaluation model on the behavioral change is lacking. This study was designed to evaluate the behavioral curves using a statistically modeled trajectory analysis in neuropathic animals with or without social defect exposure. MATERIAL/METHODS: After approval by the institutional animal care committee, Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into different interventional groups with 15 animals each. Sprague-Dawley rats underwent spared n

Psychiatric severity and HIV-risk sexual behaviors among persons with substance use disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between mental illness and human-immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-risk sexual behavior among persons with substance use disorders is not well-established because of differences in assessing psychiatric factors (types, symptoms, severity), substance use (diagnosis, survey responses, past substance use), and HIV-risk sexual behaviors (individual measures, combination of sex/drug use risk behaviors) across studies. This study utilized a more global and dimensional aspect of psychiatric issues (problem severity) to examine the relationship with HIV-risk sexual behaviors and

Surveillance of certain health behaviors and conditions among states and selected local areas - Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, United States, 2007.

PROBLEM: Chronic diseases (e.g., heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes) are the leading causes of death in the United States. Controlling health risk behaviors (e.g., smoking, physical inactivity, poor diet, and excessive drinking) and using preventive health-care services (e.g., cancer, hypertension, and cholesterol screenings) can reduce morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases. Monitoring health-risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and preventive care practices is essential to develop health promotion activities, intervention programs, and health policies at the state, city

Sleep disorders in children with Smith-Magenis Syndrome - a neurodevelopmental disorder with sleep-wake-rhythm-dysfunction - recommendations for pediatricians.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders in children with Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) are common. They affect not only the child but also the entire family. Disturbed sleep in SMS is caused by a sleep-wake rhythm dysfunction. SMS patients mostly have an inverted melatonin secretion rhythm with a peak in melatonin levels during the day. Therefore, children with SMS are often awake at night and sleepy during the day, followed by extremely severe behavioral problems. There are many recent scientific studies with treatment recommendations. PURPOSE: Since SMS is a rare disorder, many doctors are not familiar w
