Patient Safety Events Among People from Ethnic Minority Backgrounds: A Retrospective Medical Record Review of Australian Cancer Services.

OBJECTIVES: People from ethnic minority backgrounds are exposed to greater risk of patient safety events (such as healthcare-acquired infections and medication errors) occurring in their healthcare. However, evidence of the type and frequency of patient safety events occurring in cancer care among patients from ethnic minority background is lacking. This study sought to address this evidence gap. DESIGN: A two-stage retrospective medical record review was conducted at four cancer services in two Australian states. Eligible medical records at each service that were identified as belonging to e

Accounting for exact vegetation index recording date to enhance evaluation of time-lagged and accumulated climatic effects on global vegetation greenness.

Considering time-lag and accumulation effects of climate is crucial for accurately evaluating vegetation dynamics under global climate change. Most studies investigate these mechanisms by examining the explanatory power of the overall climatic conditions of the same month of the day at which the vegetation index is recorded, or the preceding month(s). This approach, referred to as monthly climate approach, risks underestimating the importance of within-month vegetation index variations. This study introduces an alternative approach, the EVI-date climate approach, which considers climate data f

Quantitative Electrodermal Activity Analysis of Simultaneous Recordings from Dyads during Affective Visual Task: Proof of Concept and Preliminary Results.

Understanding social interactions in emotional and cognitive planes has been the object of recent research through quantitative psychophysiological measures. Among these, Electrodermal Activity (EDA) remained relatively underexplored. This study investigates the potential of EDA as a tool for distinguishing emotional states based on the arousal domain of affect in dyads. Twenty-two healthy participants (11 dyads) observed the same affective images in pairs. Four active sessions, composed of 20 images selected from the IAPS database, were presented with progressively increasing arousal levels.

False-positive tolerant model misconduct mitigation in distributed federated learning on electronic health record data across clinical institutions.

As collaborative Machine Learning on cross-institutional, fully distributed networks become an important tool in predictive health modeling, its inherent security risks must be addressed. One among such risks is the lack of a mitigation strategy against injections of tampered models (or "model misconduct") into the collaborative pipeline, without excessive false alarms. We propose a false-positive tolerant methodology to preserve model integrity and mitigate the impacts of adversarial misconduct in a Federated Learning scenario. Our method grants false-positive detection leeway as each partici

Novel SACS Variants not Recorded in ClinVar Identified in a Chinese Patient with Late-Onset Hereditary Neuropathy: a Case Report and Literature Review.

Autosomal Recessive Spastic Ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder due to mutations in the SACS gene. While the typical phenotype is characterized by cerebellar ataxia, spasticity, and peripheral neuropathy, more reports are published of atypical and late-onset presentations, also lacking typical cerebellar signs of the disease, which can mimic Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). We report a 58-year-old Chinese male with a 12-year history of progressive gait instability and lower limb weakness, who also exhibited retinal degeneration. Remarkably, in contrast

Evaluation of Dexmedetomidine-Associated Bradycardia and Related Drug-Drug Interactions Using Electronic Health Record (EHR) and miRNA Target Analysis.

Dexmedetomidine is a commonly used sedative because it has minimal adverse effects on respiratory function. Nevertheless, its cardiovascular safety profile, particularly bradycardia risk and drug-drug interactions (DDIs), remains incompletely understood. Additionally, current studies, including our previous analysis using the FDA adverse event reporting system (FAERS), hold several limitations. In this study, the electronic health record (EHR) platform TriNetX was utilized for pharmacovigilance analyses of dexmedetomidine. The significantly elevated incidence of bradycardia in dexmedetomidine-

Improved clinical care and capacity through an integrated electronic patient-reported outcome measure and health record system in inflammatory arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are essential for inflammatory arthritis (IA). Collecting electronic PROMs (ePROMs) remotely into electronic patient records (EPRs) enables timely, patient-centred care. This study evaluated the real-world clinical impact, efficiency and feasibility of implementing a fully integrated ePROM system across three IA conditions: rheumatoid arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis and psoriatic arthritis. METHODS: From January 2019 to December 2024, IA patients completed ePROMs remotely at regular intervals or on request by patients or clinicians, wit

Visual Training Induced Temporo-Occipital Fast Sleep Spindle Clustering in Humans Revealed by Full-Night HD-EEG Recordings.

This study investigates the impact of extensive visual procedural training on the temporal organisation of sleep spindles in healthy young adults. We selected 39 participants aged 16-20 and employed high-density electroencephalography to assess spindle characteristics during two full nights of sleep, with daytime practising in a contour integration task in between the two nights. We utilised linear mixed models (LMM) to comprehensively analyse the effects of age and training on basic, clustering- and rhythmicity-related spindle parameters. Our findings indicate no significant age effects in th

Utility of external event recorders in detecting symptom-arrhythmia correlation in children complaining palpitations after successful supraventricular tachycardia ablation.

BACKGROUND: The persistence of palpitations in some patients after supraventricular tachycardia ablation is a common challenge despite high procedural success rates. Establishing a correlation between symptoms and tachycardia is especially crucial for adolescent patients, who face challenges in perceiving and articulating their symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the significance and efficacy of external event recorders in detecting symptom-arrhythmia correlation in paediatric patients experiencing palpitations following successful supraventricular tachycardia ablation. METHODS: Among the

Patient-recorded indexing measurements (PRIMS) - study protocol of a prospective observational cohort study to improve the accuracy of the diagnosis of cancer cachexia.

BACKGROUND: Cachexia is a major challenge throughout cancer treatment. Unintentional weight loss, the principal diagnostic criterium of cancer cachexia, is usually assessed through self-reported body weight change, which may be prone to bias. Other aspects of cancer cachexia include altered body composition (e.g., loss of muscle mass) and impaired physical activity. The central aim of the 'Patient-Recorded Indexing MeasurementS' (PRIMS) study is to improve the accuracy of the diagnosis of cachexia in patients with cancer. The primary objectives are to compare self-reported and objectively meas

Exploring the vector potential of Lipoptena cervi (Diptera: Hippoboscidae): first record of Setaria cervi (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) DNA in deer keds.

Setaria cervi is a filarial nematode that infects both wild and domestic ungulates. It is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes, although the possible role of other hematophagous insects is still uncertain. We investigated 83 wingless deer keds (Lipoptena spp.) from red and fallow deer in northern and eastern Slovakia, as well as 43 red deer liver samples for the presence of filarial DNA. Deer keds were identified as Lipoptena cervi (n = 80) and Lipoptena fortisetosa (n = 3). Genomic DNA from individual ectoparasites was screened by PCR targeting a mitochondrial cox1 gene fragment of filaroid ne

Henon bamboo flowering recorded first time in 120 years revealed how Aciculosporium take affects the floral organs of the host.

Flowering of Henon bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis) was observed in Japan in 2020s. We estimated that the observation of flowering was recorded for the first time in 120 y. Additionally, stromata of Aciculosporium take have also been observed in the flower buds, or spikelets, of Henon bamboo. Aciculosporium take usually forms stromata at the vegetative shoot apex, which presumably originated from ancestral pathogens affecting floral tissues. However, given the infrequent occurrence of bamboo flowering events, it is unclear whether A. take still retains the ability to colonize ovaries
