Therapeutic Effects of Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Exosomes in Cardiovascular Disease.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells that reside in various organs. They have the capacity to differentiate into various cell types, including cardiomyocytes, vascular endothelial cells, and vascular smooth muscle cells. Among the various MSCs, bone marrow-derived MSCs (BMMSCs) have been widely used for treating acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and ischemic heart failure (IHF) in preclinical and clinical studies. Although the beneficial effects of BMMSCs in treating AMI and IHF were originally attributed to their capacity to differentiate into cardiac cell types, recent ev

On-Top Index Pollicization After a Partial Amputation of a Syndactylized Hypoplastic Thumb in a Patient With Townes-Brocks Syndrome.

Townes-Brocks syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by multiple malformations, including thumb anomalies. Thumb hypoplasia poses a specific problem, where a deficient thumb creates a significant handicap in hand function. The treatment goal is enabling pinch and grip activity, and the preferred procedure for a severely hypoplastic thumb is index finger pollicization. We present a case of on-top index pollicization in a 10-year-old, after a partial amputation of a previously syndactylized hypoplastic thumb, with a well-formed first carpometacarpal joint. The decision to p

Algorithm for bionic hand reconstruction in patients with global brachial plexopathies.

OBJECTIVE Global brachial plexus lesions with multiple root avulsions are among the most severe nerve injuries, leading to lifelong disability. Fortunately, in most cases primary and secondary reconstructions provide a stable shoulder and restore sufficient arm function. Restoration of biological hand function, however, remains a reconstructive goal that is difficult to reach. The recently introduced concept of bionic reconstruction overcomes biological limitations of classic reconstructive surgery to restore hand function by combining selective nerve and muscle transfers with elective amputat

Rapid and sustained cognitive recovery in APP/PS1 transgenic mice by co-administration of EPPS and donepezil.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by sequential progression of pathological events, such as aggregation of amyloid-β proteins, followed by outward symptoms of cognitive impairments. Given that a combination of different therapeutic strategies often provides more rapid and effective outcomes in diverse areas of clinical treatment, we hypothesized that administration of anti-amyloid drugs with cognitive enhancers would result in synergistic effects in AD treatment. Here, we co-administered 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazinepropane-sulphonic acid (EPPS), an amyloi

Cannabinoid Type-2 Receptor Drives Neurogenesis and Improves Functional Outcome After Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability characterized by physical, cognitive, and emotional disturbances. Unfortunately, pharmacological options are scarce. The cannabinoid type-2 receptor (CB2R) is neuroprotective in acute experimental stroke by anti-inflammatory mechanisms. However, its role in chronic stroke is still unknown. METHODS: Stroke was induced by permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion in mice; CB2R modulation was assessed by administering the CB2R agonist JWH133 ((6aR,10aR)-3-(1,1-dimethylbutyl)-6a,7,10,10a-tetrahydro-6,6,9-trimethyl-6H-dibenzo[b

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in the Treatment of Essential Tremor: An Open-Label Study.

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacotherapy and thalamic stimulation are the most accepted methods used for the treatment of essential tremor (ET). Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive method for brain stimulation, especially to treat pain, cerebrovascular disease, and depression. tDCS applied to the cerebellar region has been shown to exhibit a modulating effect on the excitability of Purkinje cells and to cause primary motor cortex inhibition through the regulation of synaptic dentato-thalamo-cortical excitability. There is only 1 trial that studied the effect of tDCS on ET with

Study of Repetitive Movements Induced Oscillatory Activities in Healthy Subjects and Chronic Stroke Patients.

Repetitive movements at a constant rate require the integration of internal time counting and motor neural networks. Previous studies have proved that humans can follow short durations automatically (automatic timing) but require more cognitive efforts to track or estimate long durations. In this study, we studied sensorimotor oscillatory activities in healthy subjects and chronic stroke patients when subjects were performing repetitive finger movements. We found the movement-modulated changes in alpha and beta oscillatory activities were decreased with the increase of movement rates in finger

Extension of recovery time from fatigue by repeated rest with short-term sleep during continuous fatigue load: Development of chronic fatigue model.

Homeostasis is known to be involved in maintaining the optimal internal environment, helping to achieve the best performance of biological functions. At the same time, a deviation from optimal conditions often attenuates the performance of biological functions, and such restricted performance could be considered as individual fatigue, including physical and mental fatigue. The present study seeks to develop an animal model of chronic or subacute fatigue in which the recovery time is extended through the gradual disruption of homeostasis. We show that repeated short-term rest periods with certa

Etiology and long-term functional swallow outcomes in pediatric unilateral vocal fold immobility.

OBJECTIVE: Unilateral vocal fold immobility (UVFI) results in deficits in phonatory, respiratory, and swallow function of the pediatric patient. Little is known about long-term functional swallow outcomes. METHODS: Medical records of children diagnosed with UVFI between 2005 and 2014 at a tertiary children's hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Etiology, laryngoscopy findings, and swallow status at diagnosis and follow-up were recorded. Swallow outcomes were compared by etiology using Fisher's exact test. McNemar's test was used to identify correlations between return of mobility and swall

Cannabinoid 1 receptor knockout mice display cold allodynia, but enhanced recovery from spared-nerve injury-induced mechanical hypersensitivity.

BACKGROUND: The function of the Cannabinoid 1 receptor (CB1R) in the development of neuropathic pain is not clear. Mounting evidence suggest that CB1R expression and activation may contribute to pain. Cannabinoid 1 receptor knockout mice (CB1R-/-) generated on a C57Bl/6 background exhibit hypoalgesia in the hotplate assay and formalin test. These findings suggest that Cannabinoid 1 receptor expression mediates the responses to at least some types of painful stimuli. By using this mouse line, we sought to determine if the lack of Cannabinoid 1 receptor unveils a general hypoalgesic phenotype, i

Mending a Faltering Heart.

More people die every year from ischemic heart disease than any other disease. Because the human heart lacks sufficient ability to replenish the damaged cardiac muscles, extensive research has been devoted toward understanding the homeostatic and regenerative potential of the heart and to develop regenerative therapies for heart disease. Here, we discuss recent advances in the understanding of mechanisms governing heart growth during homeostasis or injury, including those from observational studies in humans and experimental research in animal models of cardiac regeneration. We also discuss ho

Dosages of cold-water immersion post exercise on functional and clinical responses: a randomized controlled trial.

Cold-water immersion (CWI) is one of the recovery techniques commonly used by athletes for post-exercise recovery. Nevertheless, the effects of CWI using different temperatures and the dose-response relationship of this technique have not yet been investigated. The aims of this study were to compare the effects of two strategies of CWI, using different water temperatures with passive recovery post exercise in the management of some markers of muscle damage, and to observe whether any of the techniques used caused deleterious effects on performance. Sixty healthy male participants performed an
