An Effective Technique for Managing the Calcaneus Osteomyelitis Combined with Soft-Tissue Defect.

The treatment of the Cierny-Mader (C-M) type III-IV calcaneus osteomyelitis combining with the soft-tissue defect is sophisticated and difficult. The aim of this study is to introduce the application and availability of the modified distally based sural flap with an adipofascial extension to reconstruct these defects. We retrospectively reviewed the data of 37 patients with C-M type III-IV calcaneus osteomyelitis accompanied with soft-tissue defect between December 2004 and December 2019. A modified distally based sural flap with an adipofascial extension was conducted to reconstruct the defec

2-step deep learning model for landmarks localization in spine radiographs.

In this work we propose to use Deep Learning to automatically calculate the coordinates of the vertebral corners in sagittal x-rays images of the thoracolumbar spine and, from those landmarks, to calculate relevant radiological parameters such as L1-L5 and L1-S1 lordosis and sacral slope. For this purpose, we used 10,193 images annotated with the landmarks coordinates as the ground truth. We realized a model that consists of 2 steps. In step 1, we trained 2 Convolutional Neural Networks to identify each vertebra in the image and calculate the landmarks coordinates respectively. In step 2, we r

Classification for Thumb Opposition in Children with Thumb Hypoplasia.

Background: The Kapandji scale has 10 levels and includes abduction, rotation and flexion movements. Assessing children with thumb hypoplasia, this scale is poorly understood and confusing. The objective of the study is to evaluate an opposition scale simpler and understandable for children. Methods: It is a validation study of a simplified scale to qualify the opposition of the thumb, in order to asses only the abduction - rotation but not the flexion of the metacarpo-phalangeal (MP) or interphalangeal (IF) joint. The proposed classification goes from 0 to 3 degrees, where 0: No opposition, 1

Predicting treatment recommendations in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

We designed, implemented, and tested a clinical decision support system at the Research Center for the Study of Menopause and Osteoporosis within the University of Ferrara (Italy). As an independent module of our system, we implemented an original machine learning system for rule extraction, enriched with a hierarchical extraction methodology and a novel rule evaluation technique. Such a module is used in everyday operation protocol, and it allows physicians to receive suggestions for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. In this paper, we design and execute an experiment based on two year

A Clinician-Free Method Using Top-View Photography for Screening and Monitoring Hallux Valgus.

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus is a progressive foot deformity that commonly affects middle-aged women. The aim of this study was to develop a novel method using only top-view photographs to assess hallux valgus severity. METHODS: A top-view digital photograph was taken of each foot of 70 female participants. Two straight lines were drawn along the medial edge of the great toe and forefoot, and the included angle (termed bunion angle) was measured using a free software program. Each foot was also assessed by a clinician using the Manchester scale as no (grade 1), mild (grade 2), moderate (grade 3)

Extrusion of the medial meniscus is a potential predisposing factor for post-arthroscopy osteonecrosis of the knee.

BACKGROUND: Post-arthroscopic osteonecrosis of the knee (PAONK) is a rare condition. No studies have analyzed the relationship between the meniscus extrusion and PAONK. The purpose of this retrospective study is to test a hypothesis that the degree of the medial meniscus (MM) extrusion might be significantly greater in the knees with PAONK than in the matched control knees both before and after the meniscectomy. METHODS: Ten knees with PAONK were detected out of a total of 876 knees which had undergone arthroscopic partial meniscectomy of the MM. Ten matched control knees were randomly select

Novel Magnetic Resonance Imaging Classification of Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Knee: A Reliability Study.

BACKGROUND: Current advanced imaging classification systems for osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the knee grade severity of disease by identifying certain lesion characteristics. The most widely used are the Hefti and Nelson systems. A novel classification presents a simpler 3-group approach to diagnose knee OCD by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), compared with the Hefti (5-group) and Nelson (4-group) classifications. The purpose of this study was to compare the reliability of this novel classification with that of the more complex, established systems-an initial step in establishing validi

The Clinician-Administered Dissociative States Scale (CADSS): Validation of the German Version.

The Clinician-Administered Dissociative States Scale (CADSS) is a structured clinical interview to assess state dissociation rated by clinicians. The current study aimed to validate the German version of CADSS by comparing it to the established self-report measures for dissociation and exploring its underlying factor structure. Severity of within-session state dissociation was assessed directly following a standard psychotherapy session in a trauma-exposed patient sample (N= 105; 81.9% female). Internal consistency, convergent validity with other dissociation measures, and the factorial struct

Role of Acupuncture in Amblyopia Treatment.

Amblyopia is an ophthalmological developmental disorder that occurs during early childhood due to disrupted binocular vision. It leads to reduced best-corrected visual acuity in one eye (seldom in both eyes) in which the visual acuity of one eye is 2 rows weaker than the other eye on a Snellen vision testing chart. Many studies have reported the outcomes of acupuncture in the treatment of amblyopia. Evidence suggests that acupuncture improves outcomes in children with amblyopia, but these studies are associated with several limitations which may affect the evaluation of the efficacy and reprod
