Invited review: Impact of maternal health and nutrition on the microbiome and immune development of neonatal calves.

This comprehensive review highlights the intricate interplay between maternal factors and the co-development of the microbiome and immune system in neonatal calves. Based on human and mouse studies, multiple prenatal and postnatal factors influence this process by altering the host-associated microbiomes (gut, respiratory tract, skin), microbial colonization trajectories, and priming of the immune systems (mucosal and systemic). This review emphasizes the importance of early-life exposure, highlighting postnatal factors that work in synergy with maternal factors in further fine-tuning the co-d

Particle inhalability of a standing mannequin with large airways in a ventilated room.

This study presents a series of numerical simulations for airflow field and particle dispersion and deposition around a mannequin inside a ventilated room. A 3-D airway system of a volunteer subject with a large respiratory system was reconstructed from the nostril inlet to the end of the tracheobronchial tree 4th generation and was integrated into a standing mannequin at the center of a room. The room ventilation system supplied air through a diffuser and expelled air via a damper in three modes. The airflow field was first evaluated by solving the governing equations and the k-ω SST transiti

SARS - CoV-2: Reasons of epidemiology of severe ill disease cases and therapeutic approach using trivalent vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria and Bordetella pertussis).

The novel coronavirus Covid-19 follows transmission route and clinical presentation of all community-acquired coronaviruses. Instead, the rate of transmission is significative higher, with a faster spread of the virus responsible of the worldwide outbreak and a significative higher mortality rate due to the development of a severe lung injury. Most noteworthy is the distribution of death rate among age groups. Children and younger people are almost protected from severe clinical presentation. Possible explanation of this phenomenon could be the ability of past vaccinations (especially tetanic,

Probiotics in Medicine: A Long Debate.

During the last years probiotics gained the attention of clinicians for their use in the prevention and treatment of multiple diseases. Probiotics main mechanisms of action include enhanced mucosal barrier function, direct antagonism with pathogens, inhibition of bacterial adherence and invasion capacity in the intestinal epithelium, boosting of the immune system and regulation of the central nervous system. It is accepted that there is a mutual communication between the gut microbiota and the liver, the so-called "microbiota-gut-liver axis" as well as a reciprocal communication between the in

Evaluation of the Quantamatrix Multiplexed Assay Platform system for simultaneous detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the rifampicin resistance gene using cultured mycobacteria.

BACKGROUND: The differentiation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) from non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) is of primary importance for infection control and the selection of anti-tuberculosis drugs. Up to date data on rifampicin (RIF)-resistant tuberculosis (TB) is essential for the early management of multidrug-resistant TB. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a newly developed multiplexed, bead-based bioassay (Quantamatrix Multiplexed Assay Platform, QMAP) for the rapid differentiation of 23 Mycobacterium species including MTBC and RIF-resistant strains. Granulomatosis with polyangiitis. A diagnostic challenge in pediatric patients.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by the presence of granulomatous necrotizing vasculitis with kidney, respiratory, and vascular involvement, whose peak incidence is in the fifth and sixth decades of life. Its localized presentation without systemic involvement is infrequent. We present the case of a 10-year-old patient with recurrent eyelid edema as the initial symptom in the setting of granulomatosis with systemic polyangiitis. Although rare, this disease can affect children, as in the case we present, and given its low incidence and atypical pre

[The lungs: starting point for many diseases].

The lungs are a frequent site for the manifestation of systemic, neoplastic and immunological multiorgan diseases. In the clinical routine, patients frequently present with symptoms from the respiratory spectrum of disorders, such as dyspnea. After a clinical examination, lung function testing and imaging an initial pulmonary manifestation can often be detected; however, the ultimate assignment to a systemic disease is usually only successful in the synopsis of the clinical results, pulmonary involvement, extrapulmonary manifestation and further diagnostics. This review article presents three

APPLICATION OF LAPAROSCOPIC LIFTING SYSTEMS IN PATIENTS WITH HIGH CARDIORESPIRATORY RISK.

Intra-abdominal hypertension during laparoscopic operations increased the risk of complications from cardiovascular and respiratory systems. An application of laparolifting systems allowed doctors to avoid changes of pneumoperitoneum, although it was associated with technical difficulties in operation performance. The authors used a test in order to determine cardiorespiratory reserve in preoperative period. The reserve was characterized by decrease of stroke volume of the heart against the background of intra-abdominal hypertension. There was noted a reliable increase of complication rate in

[Humidifier fever].

Pollution of air ventilation and conditioning systems by microorganisms and products of their activity can lead to the development of infectious (legionnaires' disease) and allergic (humidifier fever) diseases. Clinical, immunological and hygienic investigations under natural conditions of 72 persons working in offices helped to study a respiratory disease which was similar to humidifier fever. The removal of dust and mud from the system and thorough cleaning of all conditioned rooms put an end to this disease.

Exploring the role of extreme climate events (ECEs) in the incidence of respiratory disease in South Africa.

In recent decades, escalating extreme climate events (ECEs) have raised significant concerns regarding their effects on public health in South Africa, particularly respiratory illness. This study examined the relationship between ECEs and respiratory health outcomes over a 12-year period (2008-2019). A total of 48 ECEs were analyzed, of which 28 occurred in regions reporting more than 100 medical insurance claims for respiratory diseases. These events included storms, heatwaves, cold waves, floods, and tornadoes. Using a two-week lag period, we assessed their short-term association with respir

Accurate health information is the best strategy against misinformation and disinformation: respiratory specialists are on the front line.

INTRODUCTION: Disinformation refers to false information deliberately shared with the intent to cause harm. Disinformation is escalating because health is a global concern and tends to elicit strong emotional responses. Misinformation refers to false information shared without malicious intent. AREAS COVERED: Health-related misinformation and disinformation undermine prevention efforts, distort health behaviors, and erode trust in institutions and professionals. A French mission identified three vulnerabilities: low health literacy, difficulty in assessing the reliability of sources, and algo

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Therapy in Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis-Related Respiratory Failure: A Case Report.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a rare and life-threatening cutaneous adverse reaction characterized by > 30% total body surface area desquamation and mucosal involvement. Although ocular, oral, and urogenital mucosal involvements are well described, pulmonary mucosal injury is uncommon and associated with high mortality. We report a case of a 33-year-old woman with rapidly progressive TEN complicated by respiratory failure. Despite early multidisciplinary management including local wound care, immunomodulatory therapy, systemic corticosteroids, and lung-protective mechanical ventilation,

Host-directed broad-spectrum immunotherapeutic strategy for respiratory infections: Heat-killed Caulobacter crescentus (HKCC) as an innate-immune based biotherapeutic/postbiotic.

Respiratory infections are among the leading causes of illness and death. The lack or limited effectiveness of vaccines for many respiratory pathogens underscores the urgent need for alternative, broadly protective strategies. While adaptive immunity is commonly used in vaccine development, the therapeutic potential of activating and enhancing innate immunity remains underutilized. Innate immune-focused interventions could offer rapid, pathogen-independent protection, bridging the gap until pathogen-specific responses develop. Therefore, exploring new broad-spectrum innate immune-targeting imm
