Skin thickness dimensions in histological section measurement during late-fetal and neonatal developmental period: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The development and maturation of the skin is a process that occurs during the gestation and neonatal period. Histological skin biopsy studies are relevant to improve knowledge on the skin protective barrier during the perinatal period. The thin skin of preterm newborns is unable to maintain homeostasis, thermal regulation through the skin, and is susceptible to infections. This study systematically reviewed the evidence regarding histological thickness dimensions of the skin and its layers during the late-fetal and neonatal period. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, BVS, and e SciELO libra

Systematic review: hand activity and ultrasound of the median nerve.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound is an established method of viewing the median nerve in the carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). There is some evidence to suggest that immediate changes may occur in the median nerve before and after hand activity. The evidence for the validity and reliability of ultrasound for testing acute changes in the median nerve has not been systematically reviewed to date. AIMS: To evaluate the evidence for visible change in ultrasound appearance of the median nerve after hand activity. METHODS: A literature search was designed, and three reviewers independently selected published re

Identity Processes and Intrinsic and Extrinsic Goal Pursuits: Directionality of Effects in College Students.

Identity research has mainly focused on the degree to which adolescents and emerging adults engage in exploration and commitment to identity goals and strivings. Somewhat lacking from this research tradition is an explicit focus on the content of the identity goals that individuals deem important and pursue. The present manuscript describes two longitudinal studies sampling college students in which we examine how exploration and commitment processes relate to intrinsic and extrinsic goal pursuits as defined in Self-Determination Theory. Study 1 was a two-wave longitudinal study spanning 6 mon

Plasma Drug Concentrations of Orally Administered Rosuvastatin in Hispaniolan Amazon Parrots (Amazona ventralis).

Atherosclerotic diseases are common in pet psittacine birds, in particular Amazon parrots. While hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia have not definitely been associated with increased susceptibility to atherosclerosis in parrots, these are important and well-known risk factors in humans. Therefore statin drugs such as rosuvastatin constitute the mainstay of human treatment of dyslipidemia and the prevention of atherosclerosis. No pharmacologic studies have been performed in psittacine birds despite the high prevalence of atherosclerosis in captivity. Thirteen Hispaniolan Amazon parrots were

Oxidative Stress and Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common arrhythmia after cardiac surgery and is linked to higher mortality and hospitalizations. Oxidative injury may contribute to its development; therefore, we aimed to systematically evaluate the relationship between oxidative stress biomarkers and POAF. MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to August 2026 for studies reporting oxidative stress biomarkers and POAF in adults undergoing cardiac surgery. Altogether, 31 studies (4,983 patients) were included; most were at high risk of bias by QUIPS assessment.

Monitoring antimicrobial resistance in care homes through wastewater surveillance: a scoping review.

Antimicrobial resistance poses a growing threat, especially in care homes where older residents are particularly vulnerable due to frequent antibiotic use and comorbidities. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a growing focus on wastewater surveillance for detecting and monitoring pathogens in healthcare settings. This study followed the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review framework to map the extent of available literature on wastewater-based epidemiological studies addressing antimicrobial resistance in care homes for older adults. Six electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Sc

The apelinergic-axis in human preeclamptic pregnancies: A systematic review.

The apelinergic-axis (Apelin, Elabela and their receptor APJ) is involved in many physiological and pathological processes. Both Elabela/APJ and Apelin/APJ are implicated in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia in rodents. However, the findings regarding the apelinergic axis in human preeclamptic placental development have been rather conflicting. In this systematic review we present an overview of the current evidence regarding the pathophysiological role of Apelin, Elabela and their receptor in human preeclamptic pregnancies. The databases used for this systematic review were Pubmed, Scopus,

Exposure to PFOA and PFOS and fetal growth: a critical merging of toxicological and epidemiological data.

UNLABELLED: Toxicological and epidemiological evidence on the association between perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and birth/fetal weight was assessed. An extensive search for toxicological information in rats and mice, and a systematic search for epidemiological evidence were conducted. The linear regression coefficient (LRC) of birth weight (BrthW) on PFOA/PFOS was considered, and separate random effects meta-analyses for untransformed (i.e. not mathematically transformed) and log-transformed values were performed. Toxicological evidence: PFOA: 12 studies

Metabolomics: a tool for early detection of toxicological effects and an opportunity for biology based grouping of chemicals-from QSAR to QBAR.

BASF has developed a Metabolomics database (MetaMap(®) Tox) containing approximately 500 data rich chemicals, agrochemicals and drugs. This metabolome-database has been built based upon 28-day studies in rats (adapted to OECD 407 guideline) with blood sampling and metabolic profiling after 7, 14 and 28 days of test substance treatment. Numerous metabolome patterns have been established for different toxicological targets (liver, kidney, thyroid, testes, blood, nervous system and endocrine system) which are specific for different toxicological modes of action. With these patterns early detectio

The assessment of regional skeletal metabolism: studies of osteoporosis treatments using quantitative radionuclide imaging.

Studies of bone remodeling using bone biopsy and biochemical markers of bone turnover play an important role in research studies to investigate the effect of new osteoporosis treatments on bone quality. Quantitative radionuclide imaging using either positron emission tomography with fluorine-18 sodium fluoride or gamma camera studies with technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate provides a novel tool for studying bone metabolism that complements conventional methods, such as bone turnover markers (BTMs). Unlike BTMs, which measure the integrated response to treatment across the whole skeleton, r

The Predictive Role of ctDNA and CTCs in Patients with Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Receiving Immunotherapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) and circulating tumour cells (CTCs) have emerged as promising non-invasive biomarkers for the immunotherapy response in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, their clinical utility remains uncertain due to variability in findings across studies. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies from 2014 to 2024, assessing the predictive value of ctDNA and CTCs in advanced NSCLC patients receiving immunotherapy. Primary outcomes were progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Forty-four studies were included (28 ctDNA,

Does weight loss in women with obesity induce regression of endometrial hyperplasia? A systematic review.

Obesity is a leading risk factor for endometrial cancer and its precursor, endometrial hyperplasia (EH). Currently, weight loss is recommended for people with EH and obesity, but evidence to guide weight management as primary or adjunctive therapy is limited. This systematic review aims to assess the role of weight loss in inducing histopathological regression of EH in women with obesity. A systematic search of Medline, PubMed, Embase and The Cochrane Library databases was conducted in January 2022. Analytical and Clinical Validation of Assays for Volumetric Absorptive Microsampling (VAMS) of Drugs in Different Blood Matrices: A Literature Review.

Volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS) is the newest and most promising sample-collection technique for quantitatively analyzing drugs, especially for routine therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) and pharmacokinetic studies. This technique uses an absorbent white tip to absorb a fixed volume of a sample (10-50 µL) within a few seconds (2-4 s), is more flexible, practical, and more straightforward to be applied in the field, and is probably more cost-effective than conventional venous sampling (CVS). After optimization and validation of an analytical method of a drug taken by VAMS, a clinical
