Contextual factors associated with high-intensity drinking events among young adults: A qualitative inquiry.

BACKGROUND: Much of the prior research addressing risky drinking among young adults has focused on heavy episodic drinking (4+/5+ drinks in a single sitting for females/males). However, 1 in 3 young adults engaged in past-year high-intensity drinking (HID, 8+/10+ drinks in a single sitting for females/males). Consuming such large amounts of alcohol is associated with serious acute consequences (e.g., severe injury, overdose) and the development of alcohol use disorder. This qualitative study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of contextual influences on HID from drinkers' perspectives. M

Overestimation of Prescription Pain Reliever Misuse and Heroin Use among Adults.

Estimates from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2019) suggest 3.6% of persons aged 12 and older misused prescription pain relievers in the past year and 0.3% used heroin. However, research suggests that most individuals drastically overestimate rates of substance use and misuse. Those who overestimate substance misuse are often more likely to misuse substances themselves (Kilmer et al., 2015; McCabe, 2008). Purpose: To compare perceived versus actual rates of prescription pain reliever misuse and heroin use among a

Acute Whiplash Injury Study (AWIS): a protocol for a cluster randomised pilot and feasibility trial of an Active Behavioural Physiotherapy Intervention in an insurance private setting.

INTRODUCTION: Whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) causes substantial social and economic burden internationally. Up to 60% of patients with WAD progress to chronicity. Research therefore needs to focus on effective management in the acute stage to prevent the development of chronicity. Approximately 93% of patients are classified as WADII (neck complaint and musculoskeletal sign(s)), and in the UK, most are managed in the private sector. In our recent systematic review, a combination of active and behavioural physiotherapy was identified as potentially effective in the acute stage. An Active Be

A preliminary quality of life questionnaire-bronchiectasis: a patient-reported outcome measure for bronchiectasis.

BACKGROUND: The Quality of Life Questionnaire-Bronchiectasis (QOL-B) is the first disease-specific, patient-reported outcome measure for patients with bronchiectasis. Content validity, cognitive testing, responsivity to open-label treatment, and psychometric analyses are presented. METHODS: Reviews of literature, existing measures, and physician input were used to generate the initial QOL-B. Modifications following preliminary cognitive testing (N = 35 patients with bronchiectasis) generated version (V) 1.0. A randomised controlled trial of an exercise plus behaviour change intervention in people with multiple sclerosis: the step it up study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Exercise has consistently yielded short-term, positive effects on health outcomes in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, these effects have not been maintained in the long-term. Behaviour change interventions aim to promote long-term positive lifestyle change. This study, namely, "Step it Up" will compare the effect of an exercise plus Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)-based behaviour change intervention with an exercise plus control education intervention on walking mobility among people with MS. METHODS/DESIGN: People with a diagnosis of MS who walk independently, score of

Understanding careseeking for child illness in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and conceptual framework based on qualitative research of household recognition and response to child diarrhoea, pneumonia and malaria.

Diarrhoea, pneumonia and malaria are the largest contributors to childhood mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. While supply side efforts to deliver effective and affordable interventions are being scaled up, ensuring timely and appropriate use by caregivers remains a challenge. This systematic review synthesises qualitative evidence on the factors that underpin household recognition and response to child diarrhoea, pneumonia and malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. For this review, we searched six electronic databases, hand searched 12 journals from 1980 to 2010 using key search terms, and solicited ex

Dengue vector dynamics (Aedes aegypti) influenced by climate and social factors in Ecuador: implications for targeted control.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, is now the fastest spreading tropical disease globally. Previous studies indicate that climate and human behavior interact to influence dengue virus and vector (Aedes aegypti) population dynamics; however, the relative effects of these variables depends on local ecology and social context. We investigated the roles of climate and socio-ecological factors on Ae. aegypti population dynamics in Machala, a city in southern coastal Ecuador where dengue is hyper-endemic. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We studied two proximate urban localities w

Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation in children with autism and its impact on plasma levels of arginine-vasopressin and oxytocin: a prospective single-blinded controlled study.

Acupuncture increases brain levels of arginine-vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OXT), which are known to be involved in the modulation of mammalian social behavior. Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) is often used clinically to produce a similar stimulation to that of acupuncture on the acupoints. In the present study, TEAS was applied to children with autism to assess its therapeutic efficacy. Seventy-six autistic children receiving rehabilitation training were divided into 2 groups: a treatment group receiving TEAS 30min per day, 5 days per week for 12 weeks (n=37) and a co

[Cognitive profiles in pervasive developmental disorders].

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the cognitive skills in pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). METHODOLOGY: Two groups of children participated in this study, 39 individuals with autism and 18 individuals with Asperger syndrome. Each participant was assessed by the Wechsler scales: WPPSI-III, WISC-III or WISC-IV. RESULTS: Children with Asperger syndrome have VIQ more than PIQ and the children with autism have VIQ less than PIQ. The performances in "block design" task vary according to the cognitive level and not according to the PDD type. The high-functioning autistic children show high

Bilharzia and the boys: questioning common assumptions.

There is insufficient and inadequate information to gauge the impact of schistosomal infection on the health of women. Biomedical research has equated women's health with the study of reproductive performance and reproductive organs and this narrow focus has left a number of important questions unanswered. Attempts to explore the economic and social aspects of schistosomal infection have been minimal and most research has focused on men rather than women. It has two characteristics: first, economists have relied on single performance indicators which are rooted in the cultural traditions of th

Generative AI Engagement and Perceived Nutrition-Oriented Feeding Practices Among Urban Indonesian Mothers: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: The Asia-Pacific region faces an escalating double burden of malnutrition, with childhood obesity now affecting more than 113 million children aged 0-19 years. A demographic of highly educated, digitally literate urban mothers-referred to in this study using the descriptive label "Alpha Mother"-increasingly draws on generative AI as a source of toddler nutrition information. Yet, whether this shift empowers or undermines quality feeding practices remains empirically untested. OBJECTIVE: This study examined how generative artificial intelligence (AI) engagement is associated with p

Increased amygdala and insula activation during emotion processing in anxiety-prone subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Increased amygdala reactivity during processing of certain types of emotional stimuli (e.g., fear, anger) has been observed in patients with anxiety disorders such as social phobia and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is uncertain whether this heightened amygdala reactivity is specific to treatment-seeking patients with anxiety disorders or is a general feature of individuals with increased anxiety-related temperamental traits. METHOD: Thirty-two physically healthy subjects 18-21 years old were recruited from a large pool of college students. Of these, 16 were chosen on the

Qualitative and Quantitative Health-Related Quality-of-Life Outcomes From an 8-year Follow-Up After Gastric Bypass Surgery in People With Type 2 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and Type 2 diabetes (T2D) impair health-related quality of life (HRQoL) across metabolic, mechanical and mental domains. Gastric bypass surgery improves HRQoL in the short term, but long-term trajectories remain insufficiently understood. This study evaluated HRQoL 8 years after gastric bypass in a cohort with T2D, integrating quantitative assessments with qualitative exploration of lived experiences. METHODS: Eleven individuals with obesity and T2D who underwent gastric bypass participated in an 8-year follow-up. Anthropometric and clinical data were collected. HRQoL was
