Examining the role of social bonds on prescription misuse among adolescents in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Prescription misuse (PM) among adolescents in the United States is a significant public health issue, with a reported prevalence of 4.9% in 2022. Understanding the role of social bonds such as parental attachment, peer influence and school engagement is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies. METHODS: Data from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health comprised 11,997 adolescents aged 12-17 years. PM was measured as a binary variable, and social bonds were assessed through scales measuring school bonds, parental bonds and community engagement. Binary logis

Using hair biomarkers to examine social-emotional resilience in adolescence: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: The SKY Schools Program combines breath-based techniques and a social-emotional learning curriculum. We examined its effects on objective physiological biomarkers, including hair cortisol (HCC, chronic stress measure) and hair oxytocin (HOC, social affiliation measure), as well as behavioral (youth risk behaviors) and mental health outcomes (anxiety, depression). METHODS: The SKY Schools program was adapted for post-pandemic restrictions (i.e., staff shortages, no lessons requiring writing, limited weekly follow-ups) and implemented among 7th grade students (daily in-person 40-min

Relationship Between Social Determinants of Health and Patient Outcomes After Orthopedic Trauma.

Orthopedic trauma care is impacted by social determinants of health (SDOH) like socioeconomic status, education, and health care access. Disparities in these areas lead to worse outcomes, particularly in rural and low-income urban populations, who face higher mortality and delayed care. Despite their importance, routine SDOH screenings are underused in trauma settings. This review emphasizes the need to integrate SDOH into orthopedic trauma care, enabling targeted interventions, timely access to resources, and equitable recovery. By addressing systemic barriers, orthopedic surgeons can play a

Social Media Depictions of the Impact of Noise Pollution on Communication and Mental and Physical Health.

Noise pollution is known to have harmful consequences on various facets of human health, as is recognized by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as by the World Health Organization. Even though noise pollution is a ubiquitous and global problem, the public may not be cognizant of its ill-effects. Often, people go online first to obtain information, and YouTube is the second most used social media platform. For these reasons, the objective of this study was to examine the information available by YouTube to the public about parameters pertaining to noise polluti

US State Policies Regarding Social Media: Do Policies Match the Evidence?

UNLABELLED: Policy Points State policymakers have moved rapidly to regulate adolescent social media use, frequently stating concerns about mental health, harmful content exposure, and developmental impacts. The degree to which policymakers' arguments in favor of state social media regulations correspond to the state of the current scientific evidence remains questionable. The evidence to substantiate policymakers' assertions has substantial limitations in the ability to answer causal questions, but some promising directions are emerging around targeted protections for highly susceptible youth.

Operationalizing social determinants of health across a county: exploring the 100% Community Framework.

For nearly half a century, research has demonstrated the profound impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on individuals' health, safety, education, and overall quality of life. However, there remains a significant gap in the literature regarding the practical implementation and operationalization of strategies to transform negative SDOH into positive ones. The complexity and scope of SDOH present challenges for community leaders and elected officials to address SDOH in measurable ways within cities, counties, or states. This article examines the 100% Community Model implementation thro

Social support sources for people with palliative care needs at home: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Recent literature suggests an increase in attention for the social dimension of palliative care. However, who provides social support to patients with palliative care needs at home and their relatives is often unclear, and insight in the role of the community and professionals with a main focus on social support, not being health care professionals, is lacking in this respect. Therefore, in this study we explore social support for people with palliative care needs residing at home and their relatives, provided by the community and professionals from the welfare domain, and want to

The Role of Online Social Support in Mental Health: Comparing Rural and Urban Youth.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Social support is essential to development, mental and emotional health, and reducing risk for psychological distress. Youth are exposed to various opportunities for socialization with peers, including through social media. Strong online social networks may be most critical for youth from isolated communities, including those from rural areas or LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, etc.) youth. With this study, we investigated associations between social media use and online social support among adolescents. Additionally, we compared the online experiences of rura

Examining Exercise-Related Cognitive Errors and Social Support for Physical Activity in Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Worry about fetal health and lack of social support are commonly reported barriers to physical activity during pregnancy. Exercise-related cognitive errors (ECEs; eg, modifiable cognitions that cause individuals to catastrophize barriers to exercise) may have an independent association with physical activity and influence the relationship between social support and worry with physical activity. This study examined whether maternal-related worry, social support (from family and friends), ECEs, and their interactions differentiated the physical activity of pregnant individuals at 3 d

The role of friendship maintenance over communication technologies in freshmen's social adjustment to college.

Objective: Studies show that friendships help undergraduates navigate the transition to college, but it is unclear how technology use impacts the maintenance of friendships and students' subsequent adjustment. This study fills this gap by examining how maintenance over communication technologies with pre-college and in-college friends is associated with freshmen's social adjustment to college, via two psychological processes: social support and belongingness. Participants and Methods: 194 college freshmen completed online surveys. Results: Path analyses show that maintaining friendships with p

Direct and Indirect Costs of Prostate Cancer: A Comprehensive Assessment of Economic and Social Impact.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is the second most common malignant cancer among men, and according to the predictions, the estimated number of new cases will substantially grow in the coming years. Therefore, the costs of the disease will increase as well. METHODS: We conducted a literature review of the state of knowledge about the costs of treatment and the economic burden of prostate cancer. The vast majority of studies were focused on direct costs only, which clearly shows the literature gap. RESULTS: We focused on the estimates of direct costs, i.e., treatment of prostate cancer, adjuvant

Exploring the influence of social support on community participation for adults with serious mental illnesses.

As researchers, advocates, and policymakers continue to emphasize community participation for people with serious mental illness (SMI), it is important to understand and strengthen the natural ties that these individuals have in the community. This study investigated how the social support provided by natural supports (i.e., relationships that occur in everyday life, such as friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors) relates to community participation. It was hypothesized that natural supports would be positively associated with community participation. Forty-eight participants comple

Mental health and the role of social support in the lives of vulnerabilized sexual minority women.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority women (SMW; women who self-identify as lesbian, queer, etc., as well as heterosexually-identified women who experience attraction to romantic or sexual partnerships with women) and vulnerabilized women (those marginalized due to structural forces such as housing insecurity, violence, sex exchange, drug use, or HIV positive status) experience a range of mental health challenges compared to their heterosexual and general population counterparts. General populations studies show a positive relationship between social support and mental health; less is known about SMW

Childhood Maternal Warmth, Social Safety Schemas, and Adolescent Mental and Physical Health.

IMPORTANCE: Although early maternal warmth strongly predicts adolescent health, questions remain about the biopsychosocial mechanisms underlying this association. OBJECTIVE: To understand how maternal warmth at 3 years of age shapes adolescent social safety schemas at 14 years of age and physical and mental health at 17 years of age. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Millennium Cohort Study tracks approximately 19 200 children born from late 2000 to early 2002 in the UK. Participants were assessed from ages 3 to 17 years.
