A Review of the Functions of Matrix Vesicles in Periodontal Tissues.

Periodontal tissues consist of cementum, periodontal ligaments, and alveolar bone, which provide indispensable support for physiological activities involving mastication, swallowing, and pronunciation. The formation of periodontal tissues requires a complex process, during which a close relationship with biomineralization is noticeable. Alveolar bone and cementum are physically hard, both of which are generated from biomineralization and possess the exact mechanical properties resembling other hard tissues. However, when periodontitis, congenital abnormalities, periapical diseases, and other p

Voluntary exercise increases brain tissue oxygenation and spatially homogenizes oxygen delivery in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Although vascular contributions to dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are increasingly recognized, the potential brain oxygenation disruption associated with AD and whether preventive strategies to maintain tissue oxygenation are beneficial remain largely unknown. This study aimed to examine (1) whether brain oxygenation is compromised by the onset of AD and (2) how voluntary exercise modulates the influence of AD on brain oxygenation. In vivo 2-photon phosphorescence lifetime microscopy was used to investigate local changes of brain tissue oxygenation with the progression of AD and its mod

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection and its association with heritable connective tissue disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an under-recognised but important cause of myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death. We sought to determine the role of medical and molecular genetic screening for connective tissue disorders in patients with SCAD. METHODS: We performed a single-centre retrospective descriptive analysis of patients with spontaneous coronary artery disease who had undergone medical genetics evaluation 1984-2014 (n=116). The presence or absence of traits suggestive of heritable connective tissue disease was extracted. Genetic testing for connecti

Infectious feline herpesvirus detected in distant bone and tendon following mucosal inoculation of specific pathogen-free cats.

Emerging evidence suggests that cats infected with feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) may experience a brief viremic phase. The objective of this study was to determine whether natural routes of FHV-1 inoculation could result in viremic transmission of infectious virus to connective tissues (cortical bone, tendon). Three specific pathogen-free cats were experimentally inoculated with FHV-1 via a combined mucosal (oronasal, ocular) route. Cats were euthanized at the peak of clinical signs to aseptically harvest tissues (cortical bone, tendon, trachea/tongue) for co-culture with a susceptible cell lin

Viral detection in hydrops fetalis, spontaneous abortion, and unexplained fetal death in utero.

This study was undertaken to investigate the occurrence of viral infection in fetal death by examining tissues for the presence of DNA of several viral agents. Tissue specimens including heart, kidney, liver, lung, and placenta of 73 cases of fetal death were examined with 27 cases of elective termination of pregnancy as a control group. DNA extracted from these samples was tested for the presence of HSV, CMV, EBV, VZV, HHV-6, HHV-7, and PVB19. Viral DNA was found in one or more tissue samples from 25/73 cases (34%): CMV in 20, HSV in 5, parvovirus B19 in 5, HHV-7 in 3, and HHV-6 in 2. The pre

Fine mapping the spatial distribution and concentration of unlabeled drugs within tissue micro-compartments using imaging mass spectrometry.

Readouts that define the physiological distributions of drugs in tissues are an unmet challenge and at best imprecise, but are needed in order to understand both the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties associated with efficacy. Here we demonstrate that it is feasible to follow the in vivo transport of unlabeled drugs within specific organ and tissue compartments on a platform that applies MALDI imaging mass spectrometry to tissue sections characterized with high definition histology. We have tracked and quantified the distribution of an inhaled reference compound, tiotropium, within

A multimodal spectroscopy system for real-time disease diagnosis.

The combination of reflectance, fluorescence, and Raman spectroscopy-termed multimodal spectroscopy (MMS)-provides complementary and depth-sensitive information about tissue composition. As such, MMS is a promising tool for disease diagnosis, particularly in atherosclerosis and breast cancer. We have developed an integrated MMS instrument and optical fiber spectral probe for simultaneous collection of all three modalities in a clinical setting. The MMS instrument multiplexes three excitation sources, a xenon flash lamp (370-740 nm), a nitrogen laser (337 nm), and a diode laser (830 nm), throug

Immunohistochemical localization of Toll-like receptors 1-10 in periodontitis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: In periodontitis, bacteria and pathogen-associated molecular patterns are sensed by Toll-like receptors (TLRs), which initiate intracellular signaling cascades that may lead to host inflammation. In this study, the expression and distribution of TLRs (TLR-1 to TLR-10) were immunohistochemically detected in gingival epithelium and connective tissue. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry was used for the localization of TLRs in gingival tissue samples from 10 patients with chronic periodontitis and 10 healthy controls; these samples were obtained during routine periodontal flap operatio

Neuronal maturation in an experimental model of brain tissue heterotopia in the lung.

Neural maturation involves diverse interaction and signaling mechanisms that are essential to the development of the nervous system. However, little is known about the development of neurons in heterotopic brain tissue in the lung, a rare abnormality observed in malformed babies and fetuses. The aim of this study was to identify the neurons and to investigate their maturation in experimental brain tissue heterotopia during fetal and neonatal periods. The fetuses from 24 pregnant female Swiss mice were used to induce brain tissue heterotopia on the 15th gestational day. Briefly, the brain of on

The mucosal barrier following abutment dis/reconnection. An experimental study in dogs.

In the present experiment, the effect on the marginal peri-implant tissues following repeated abutment removal and subsequent reconnection was studied. 5 beagle dogs were used. The mandibular premolars were extracted and 2 fixtures of the Brånemark System were installed, 1 in each mandibular quadrant. 3 months later, abutment connection was performed. A 6-month period of plaque control was initiated. Once a month during the plaque control period, the abutment of the right side (test) in each dog was disconnected, cleaned and reconnected to the failure. Thus, each test abutment was removed and

Lymphoproliferative disease of donor origin arising in patients after orthotopic liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Lymphoproliferative disease is a well recognized complication of organ transplantation and in many cases is associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. It is widely though that posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disease (PTLPD) arises from recipient lymphoid cells. However, solid organ allografts are likely to include donor lymphoid tissue around or within the transplanted organ. Therefore, it is possible that transplanted donor lymphocytes may proliferate to form PTLPD: METHODS: The genetic origin of tumor cells was determined by microsatellite DNA fingerprinting usi

Comparative Wound Healing Processes in Plants and Animals: Bioinspired Strategies for Advancing Regenerative Medicine.

Wound healing is a fundamental biological process essential to maintaining structural integrity and survival across both plant and animal life. Despite the profound evolutionary distance separating these kingdoms, wound healing provides one of those momentous occasions when these biological universes collide, revealing significant evolutionary parallels in the core mechanisms of healing, despite clear molecular and physiological differences. However, two challenges have hindered systematic cross-kingdom comparisons. First, unlike animal wound healing, the major phases of plant wound healing ha
