General Anesthesia for Patients With Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome and Obesity: A Case Report.

Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is a chronic digestive disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of severe nausea and vomiting. The perioperative management of patients with CVS undergoing general anesthesia is challenging, especially when combined with obesity. This case report describes the successful management of a patient with CVS and obesity who underwent dental surgery under general anesthesia. A 21-year-old woman with CVS, obesity (body mass index, 35), and intellectual disability was scheduled for tooth extraction and composite resin restoration under general anesthesia. The patient

A case of successful treatment of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw with conservative treatment for pathological mandibular fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical therapy is effective for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. However, appropriate conservative treatment options are still important for cases in which surgery is contraindicated. We report a case of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw successfully treated conservatively for a pathological mandibular fracture. PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 84-year-old female patient presented to our department with a chief complaint of inadequate healing of an extraction tooth socket. She had been taking minodronic acid hydrate for approximately five years for osteoporosis.

Risk factor analysis and development of predictive models for osteoradionecrosis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma after concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor that targets the nasopharyngeal mucosal epithelium. Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is a pivotal treatment modality for NPC, yet it poses a risk for osteoradionecrosis (ORN), a complication that can impede further treatment. This study sought to explore the risk factors for ORN in NPC patients post-CCRT and to construct predictive models. We performed a retrospective analysis of clinical data from 417 NPC patients treated with CCRT at the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University, with 204 patients from Longyan First Hospital as a valida

Conservative Treatment of Bilateral Impacted Mandibular Canines Traction.

The objectives of the treatment of impacted canines differ according to the characteristics of dental malocclusion. Traction of the tooth is a conservative and viable alternative, which allows for maintaining stability and occlusal function. The following case report describes the treatment of an 11.6-year-old female patient, who presented bilateral impaction of mandibular canines in contact with the midline, mixed dentition in the inter-transitional period, class I angle malocclusion, with light crowding teeth. The treatment comprised three phases. The first phase, verticalization of the mand

Physical properties of root cementum: Part 28. Effects of high and low water fluoridation on orthodontic root resorption: A microcomputed tomography study.

INTRODUCTION: Transient inflammatory surface resorption, referred to as orthodontic induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR), is an iatrogenic consequence of orthodontic tooth movement. Systemic fluoride has been associated with a reduction of OIIRR. This study aimed to investigate the effects of water fluoridation levels on OIIRR in a clinically applicable human orthodontic model. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients who required bilateral maxillary first premolar extraction as part of orthodontic treatment were selected from 2 cities with high and low water fluoridation of ≥2 ppm and ≤0.05 pp

Periimplant Bone Resorption at the Level of Tilted Implants in SKY Fast & Fixed Restorations.

Implant-prosthetic rehabilitation registers multiple variants, but their short- and long-term evolution has been a frequent concern. This study aimed to evaluate the peri-implant bone resorption at the level of the tilted implants in the SKY fast & fixed restorations, with reference to clinical and treatment parameters. An observational study was conducted on a convenience sample of patients with implant-prosthetic rehabilitation in one or both jaws, according to the SKY fast & fixed protocol (Bredent, Germany). Bone resorption was assessed on panoramic radiography. Other data were collected f

Vasculature submucosal changes at early stages of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), a rare, but potentially severe side effect of anti-resorptive medications, presents as exposed bone in the maxillofacial region lasting for at least 8 weeks. While clinical experience and animal models concur in finding that systemic antiresorptive treatment in conjunction with local risk factors, such as tooth extraction or dental disease may lead to ONJ development, the subclinical molecular changes that precede bone exposure remain poorly understood. The identification of these changes is not only important in understanding disease pathophysiology, but could

A Comparative Assessment of Implant Site Viability in Humans and Rats.

Our long-term objective is to devise methods to improve osteotomy site preparation and, in doing so, facilitate implant osseointegration. As a first step in this process, we developed a standardized oral osteotomy model in ovariectomized rats. There were 2 unique features to this model: first, the rats exhibited an osteopenic phenotype, reminiscent of the bone health that has been reported for the average dental implant patient population. Second, osteotomies were produced in healed tooth extraction sites and therefore represented the placement of most implants in patients. Commercially availa
