Evaluation of antibiotic mix in Non-instrumentation Endodontic Treatment of necrotic primary molars.

AIM: To compare the clinical and radiographic success rates of an antibiotic mix consisting of metronidazole, minocycline and ciprofloxacin (3Mix-MP) and another mix where minocycline was replaced with clindamycin (3Mix-MP-R) in non-instrumentation endodontic treatment (NIET) of necrotic primary molars and to determine the effect of root resorption on the success of the treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-two necrotic mandibular primary molars from 22 healthy children were randomly assigned to either mixture. Blinded clinical evaluation was conducted after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months by the ope

Treatment of gingival recession defects with xenogenic collagen matrix: a histologic report.

The connective tissue graft (CTG) in conjunction with a coronally advanced flap is still regarded as the gold standard treatment for gingival recession defects. Increased surgical morbidity as well as limited tissue availability continues to spur interest in alternatives to the CTG. The current case report examines a porcine-derived, double-layer collagen matrix as an alternative to the CTG in managing Miller Class I and II recession defects. A long junctional epithelial attachment as well as connective tissue adhesion were noted when collagen matrix was used in conjunction with a coronally ad

Root surface conditioning with bone morphogenetic protein-2 facilitates cementum-like tissue deposition in beagle dogs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Modification of the root surface may play an important role in regenerating the periodontal attachment between the root and periodontal connective tissue. We speculated that bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) application to the root surface constructed a novel attachment by cementum-like hard tissue, although gingival connective tissue proliferated to the root surface. The aim of this study was to examine whether BMP-2 guided cementum-like tissue deposition on a BMP-conditioned root surface. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Root dentin on the buccal side of 24 teeth in four beagl

Localized gingival recessions treated with the original envelope technique: a report of 50 consecutive patients.

BACKGROUND: The surgical techniques used to treat gingival recession have changed considerably in the last 50 years. The envelope technique described nearly 20 years ago still offers an excellent alternative for the problem of recession. The purpose of this retrospective study is to show the results of 115 recession sites treated in 50 patients using the envelope technique. METHODS: One hundred-fifteen consecutive procedures were performed in 50 patients in a private practice in the last 5 years using the envelope technique. Briefly, the teeth are scaled, a split thickness flap is performed a

Clinical significance of non-surgical periodontal therapy: an evidence-based perspective of scaling and root planing.

Analysis of Egyptian hieroglyphics and medical papyri indicate that non-surgical periodontal treatment was common 3000-4000 years ago. Even today, scaling and root planing (SRP) remains an essential part of successful periodontal therapy. The collective evidence from numerous clinical trials reveals a consistency of clinical response in the treatment of chronic periodontitis by SRP using manual, sonic, or ultrasonic instrumentation. Thus, SRP remains the 'gold standard' to which more recently developed therapeutic modalities must be compared. Inherent to the clinical evaluation of SRP are such

Histopathological study of the use of freeze-dried allogenic dentin powder and True Bone Ceramic as apical barrier materials.

The biocompatibility of freeze-dried allogenic dentin powder and True Bone Ceramics (TBC), the latter prepared by incineration of bovine bone, as apical barrier materials was evaluated histopathologically in dogs. After pulpectomy, 80 root canals of 53 dog premolar teeth were prepared, and each material was tightly packed to the apical stop area. The remainder of the canal was filled with guttapercha by the lateral condensation method. Control teeth were filled by the lateral condensation method using gutta-percha without constructing apical barriers. In both the teeth filled with the dentin p

A histological comparison of periapical inflammatory and neural responses to two endodontic sealers in the ferret.

Previous studies have shown that there is a proliferation of nerves beneath the apices of pulpectomized teeth. This may be due to the inflammation induced after the procedure, resulting, perhaps, from the irritant nature of the materials used to fill the root canal. The experiment reported here was conducted to determine whether this inflammation was induced by the sealer rather than arising as a result of tissue damage and whether, if inflammation is eliminated or reduced, the neural changes are also reduced. In 12 young adult ferrets under general anaesthesia the pulps of the lower canine te

Periodontal repair in dogs. Healing patterns in large circumferential periodontal defects.

This report describes the healing patterns of large circumferential periodontal defects in the beagle dog. Approximately 5 mm large periodontal defects were created around the mandibular premolars (P2, P3 and P4) in 13 animals. The root surfaces were then instrumented to remove all cementum and the wounds immediately closed by replacing and suturing the flaps just coronal to the cemento-enamel junction. Block biopsies were harvested after 4 weeks. Most of the surgically denuded root surface healed with connective tissue repair. Cementum formation and regeneration of alveolar bone was limited a

Tooth replantation in germ-free and conventional rats.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the influence of bacterial infection on the pulpal and periodontal tissues in replanted teeth using germ-free and conventional rats. Forty maxillary and mandibular first molars from ten 6-week-old germ-free male Wistar rats were used. The animals and all materials were maintained in a germ-free environment inside vinyl isolators throughout the experimental periods. Twenty conventional male Wistar rats served as controls. The first molars were intentionally replanted immediately after extraction. At 3 days, and 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks after replantat

The oral status of elderly removable partial denture wearers.

A random sample of 1019 elderly home dwelling persons participated in this study. There were 809 dentate respondents, 28.6% of whom wore removable partial dentures. They were examined for coronal and root caries, gingival recession, pocket depth and loss of gingival attachment. The removable partial dentures were also evaluated. Abutment teeth were found to be more likely to have caries and periodontal disease than all other teeth. Using a MANOVA statistical procedure, the analysis indicated that the partial denture itself, irrespective of any professionally determined problems with the dentur

Comment on "Laser-induced modulation of root dentin surface for growth factor release and enhanced stem cell response".

BACKGROUND: Laser conditioning of dentin has been investigated as a strategy to enhance growth factor release and cellular responses in regenerative endodontics. The recent study by Mokhtari et al. reported laser-induced modulation of root dentin, increased transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) release, and enhanced alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. However, several methodological aspects should be considered when interpreting these findings and their potential clinical translation. MAIN TEXT: A critical analysis identifies important limitations in the experimental design. First, all

Multiple External Invasive Root Resorption and Calcification in Systemic Sclerosis-Case Report.

AIM: There are few reports in the literature of multiple external invasive root resorption (EIRR) lesions in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), and an association between root resorption and SSc is not well established. We report the only case that comprehensively illustrates-with the combination of histopathology, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), orthopantomograms and photography-pulpal and periodontal ligament calcifications, multiple EIRR lesions progressing over time and the sequelae of treatment. Sixteen affected teeth, documented over 14 years, are presented. SUMMARY: A 51-yea

Volumetric analysis of root coverage with porcine acellular dermal matrix: Case study.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession is prevalent and often treated with coronally advanced flap plus connective tissue graft (CAF+CTG). Porcine acellular dermal matrix (PADM) offers a donor-site-free alternative. Contemporary digital imaging allows minimally invasive, three-dimensional (3D) soft-tissue assessment. This case report quantified 3D soft-tissue changes after PADM-based root coverage using an integrated digital workflow. METHODS: A 38-year-old woman presenting with recession-type 2 (RT2) defects on teeth #7, #6, and #5 underwent root coverage with an extended CAF in combination with a P

Distolingual root prevalence in mandibular first molar and complex root canal morphology in incisors: a CBCT analysis in Indian population.

Cone-beam computed tomography was used to understand the possible correlation between the prevalence of distolingual root (DLR) in permanent mandibular first molars (MFMs) and the associated complicated mandibular incisor's root canal morphology (MIs) in an Indian population. A total of 400 scans were evaluated for MFMs and MIs. The prevalence of DLRs and root canal anatomy of MIs were assessed based on Vertucci's classification, and then the sample were grouped according to age, sex and side. Statistical analysis was used to evaluate the possible correlation between the presence of DLRs in th
