Newborn thermal care practices in two urban slums in southern Ghana: evidence from a concurrent mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: In Ghana, neonatal deaths account for over 60% of infant deaths. While there are several studies examining the determinants of neonatal mortality and thermal care practices, few studies have focused on thermal care practices in urban slums. This paper examined newborn thermal care practices in two large urban slums in the southern part of Ghana. METHODS: The data used for this paper comes from a concurrent mixed methods cross sectional study that was conducted in two large urban slums (Ashaiman and Sodom and Gomorrah) in Accra. The quantitative survey was conducted among 279 rando

Timing of initiation of therapeutic hypothermia in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy born at a high-volume urban safety net hospital.

BACKGROUND: Ethnic and racial disparities in neonatal outcomes have been well-documented, including higher risk of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is the only approved treatment for infants with moderate to severe HIE and previous studies have shown mixed results regarding the impact of timing of initiation of TH on outcomes. These studies often include both inborn and outborn neonates and few minority patients. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study of exclusively inborn neonates from a high-volume, urban, safety net hospital (SNH) serving primarily

Young infants with bronchiolitis at low risk of respiratory deterioration in an urban, academic emergency department: prospective cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchiolitis, a viral lower respiratory tract infection, is the leading cause of hospitalisation for infants, with healthcare utilisation highest among young infants (aged ≤90 days). Clinical models to predict respiratory deterioration in infants with bronchiolitis have been developed for a broad age group that includes children up to 2 years old, not focusing specifically on young infants. These models have also been limited by exclusion of viral aetiology and by use of vital signs measured at a single time point during clinical evaluation, overlooking the variable and dynamic

Influence of residential greenness and season on discontinuation of medication treatment for opioid use disorder across rural to urban community types.

INTRODUCTION: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are standard of care for opioid use disorder (OUD), but high rates of treatment discontinuation limit their impact on recovery. Nature exposure and engagement holds promise as a potential adjunctive treatment to MOUD through stress reduction and mental health benefits. This study evaluated whether nature exposure influenced MOUD treatment participation by analyzing associations of residential greenness with MOUD discontinuation across a diverse geography in Pennsylvania, while considering interrelated factors-season and community type.

Real-world evidence from a multi-center pediatric network: greenness exposure and autism spectrum disorder in urban China.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a global public health concern and its prevalence is increasing rapidly in developing countries such as China. The mechanism behind ASD development remains unclear. Greenness exposure is reportedly associated with various health outcomes, however, the connection between greenness exposure and ASD is relatively unexplored. METHODS: We designed a two-stage screening process and conducted city-wide screening for early childhood ASD to investigate the association between greenness exposure and ASD prevalence in a megacity in southwest Chin

Iron Superoxide Dismutase (Fe-SODe) as a sensitive antigenic marker for serodiagnosis of Leishmania spp. in urban schoolchildren of Central Mexico.

Leishmaniasis remains a neglected tropical disease with significant diagnostic challenges due to serological cross-reactivity with other trypanosomatids. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of Iron Superoxide Dismutase (Fe-SODe), an excreted enzyme from Leishmania spp., as a specific antigen in detecting anti-Leishmania antibodies in school-aged children from urban areas of Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico. A total of 131 blood samples were analyzed using ELISA and Western blot assays with Fe-SODe from L. mexicana, L. braziliensis, and L. infantum. ELISA-FeSODe revealed seroprevalence

Multi-drug resistant surgical site infections following caesarean delivery: a prospective observational study from urban Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Surgical-site infections (SSI) are a feared complication of caesarean section (CS). While the incidence of post-CS SSI is estimated at 5-10% worldwide, increasing evidence suggests that women in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) may be disproportionally affected. Due to the lack of access to routine microbiology and surveillance, data on bacterial pathogens and resistance are scarce for post-CS SSI from LMIC, and antibiotic treatment is largely empirical. Further research on common pathogens and resistance patterns is urgently needed, considering the rise of antimicrobial res

Advances in surveillance and control methods for Aedes-borne diseases and urban vectors: report of the International Conference, August 2024, Tanzania.

Vector-borne diseases, particularly arboviral diseases transmitted by mosquitoes (e.g. dengue, Zika and chikungunya), have (re)emerged globally with increasing prevalence and severity. Climatic and environmental changes have resulted in significant expansion of the geographical distribution of Aedes mosquito vectors to unprecedented levels, creating optimal conditions for their introduction and establishment in new areas, especially in Africa. The prevention of Aedes-borne diseases relies heavily on controlling vector populations. However, the global resurgence of dengue underscores the limita

Impacts of future climate and land use/land cover change on urban runoff using fine-scale hydrologic modeling.

Future changes in land use/land cover (LULC) and climate (CC) affect watershed hydrology. Despite past research on estimating such changes, studies on the impacts of both these nonstationary stressors on urban watersheds have been limited. Urban watersheds have several important details such as hydraulic infrastructure that call for fine-scale models to predict the impacts of LULC and CC on watershed hydrology. In this paper, a fine-scale hydrologic model-Personal Computer Storm Water Management Model (PCSWMM)-was applied to predict the individual and joint impacts of LULC changes and CC on su

A predictive fuzzy logic and rule-based control approach for practical real-time operation of urban stormwater storage system.

Predictive real-time control (RTC) strategies are usually more effective than reactive strategies for the intelligent management of urban stormwater storage systems. However, it remains a challenge to ensure the practicality of RTC strategies that use accessible, non-idealized predictive information while improving their efficiency for successive rainfall events instead of specific phases. This study developed a predictive fuzzy logic and rule-based control (PFL-RBC) approach to address the continuous control of individual storage systems. This approach incorporates total rainfall depth foreca
